Talkback - Wander Over Yonder - "The Battle Royale" [1/2h] [10/26]

Huh, so the only complaints seem to be about: The Romance aspect?

Really? I dunno, for a show with barely any romantic themes, i'm surprised how many people get sad over this. Now, I understand if people were disappointed by how cliched this was and even how it's another heteronormative relationship when other shows have tackled gay relationships, but I honestly had the most problems with the quote unquote 'comedy' scenes in this ep.

It's a shame because while this episode was spectacular in the set piece battles or moments (especially Hater and Dominator's fight), we get these very drawn out unfunny 'comedy' scenes that just ruin the pacing and momentum of the episode.

Often I'll be: "OH MY GAWD! That was sooooo AWESO- Oh, is Wander doing something?.... Okay, i think he's trying to do something funny.... Um, can we move on now?... :looks at watch: ... Can we get back to the awesome amazing stuff that's actually FUN and EXCITING? -_-"

It felt like filler. The worst kind of filler D: It reminded me of the fruit basket routine in the S2 premiere. It wasn't really funny the first time but with each time they bring it back, the longer and more unfunny it was -_-

So yeah, the pacing and 'comedy' scenes hurt the episode a lot for me. It really felt like it didn't need to be 22 minutes long. Even my friend said the same thing. It didn't have to be 22 minutes.

Overall, awesome action packed episode with terrible TERRIBLE unfunny boring drawn out comedy scenes that take you out of the exciting moments.
:C
TBH, I don't think the fruit basket scene is as bad as the scene in Pineapple Fever where Spongebob lists things that he and his friends could do in his house or the scene in Drawn Together where the characters sit on the floor and do nothing except blink or that episode of Family Guy with literally 4 minutes of Conway Twitty.

It wasn't Wander he had a problem with, it was some of the humor involving him.

Maybe... But that doesn't mean I, MYSELF, and THEE doesn't have a problem with him sometimes. And as a fan, I have an obligation to call it out when I see it as something to be weary of, personally.

Gonna leave this here for those who criticized the humor (which is the point of the show anyways), and Wander's character development. And others who have issues with the "romance cliche."

If some of you have issues with the show, that's fine. Everyone has different expectations. But in the end, it's supposed to be a silly show that happens to have stakes elements.

Q: Will there be any character development for Wander and Hater?

A: "That was actually our big M.O. for Season 2. Even though they were our main hero and villain in Season 1, Wander and Hater didn’t actually interact all that much. We decided we wanted to lean into Wander’s desire to make Hater his friend in Season 2 and actually make him proactive about it.

"We also wanted to test Wander’s worldview a bit with Dominator; we’re a silly cartoon show, but Dominator’s a REAL VILLAIN. What works on Hater probably isn’t gonna work on Dom. In other words, he’s trying to find “Wander Over Yonder solutions” to a “Lord Dominator problem”. And Wander’s gonna learn that the hard way. We’re playing a bit of the long game on this one (while still making a bunch of classic silly Wander eps in between), so I hope you guys like it!"

Took the words out of mouth, ya winner! I really hope future episodes don't have Wander acting so stupid - it's part of the reason he's my least favorite to deal with, compared to Sylvia, Peepers, and Hater... Seriously, when your main focus of your show is less likable than other characters who especially happen to be main ones, too (like Sylvia, Peepers, and Hater are, by the way!), something might be wrong with your show. Even as a fan of this show, I can't go easy on anything when it does something stupid.

I get it that you have issues with Wander (I think it's one of the reasons why some don't tune it because they don't get Wander's personality unless fans of the show delved in to embrace that, guess they expect more Mabel and Steven than Pickle and Peanut). But I just recently saw a post by Frank Angones that they were planning development for Wander this whole time (cause, of course, Dominator and the consequence he made to the galaxy now that she's the only villain to start taking all the planets from the previous villains defeated). So hopefully things will take time, and one thing I learned is to be patient on the journey.

I understand that you don't like the humor here. But let's not forget that the point of that is to show the previously seen villains from Season 1 duking out for a ring (that's fake) now taken by Dominator who's more precise and fueled with evil fun than them being fueled by hatred comedically. So now the villains are backing off from Dominator to take their planets and be the only villain in the galaxy. Also, she knew that the ring is fake and is just having fun and not caring about others' reactions, and knowing everyone's weaknesses. Also, Dominator's not interested in romance. So big challenges for the Main 4 ahead.

This is basically a set up for the next standalones that will have consequences for Wander and Hater in Dominator's presence, and Sylvia and Peepers trying to reason with them. In fact, it's gonna cost Wander during his development (subtly whenever he gets to know more on Dominator and helping Hater with wooing her) There will be some Wander and Hater episodes that will be wacky just like Season 1, there's one episode on the Watchdogs involving Andy doing his Vlog series, and The Cartoon where Hater makes his own animated show (80s parody take).

If there's one thing I learned about trying to know what your expectations are or how you want to see it, is to be patient on what the writers are doing that may not be your vision. They may not please everyone, but they know what they are doing to make each the best they can.
