The General "Computer Issues" Thread

OK, you know that line that appears whenever you type something either here, or any word document? For some reason, it's appearing whenever I click somewhere else on Firefox. Also, to provide an example of what I'm talking about, here's a pic. Notice near the end of my name that line appears. I want to know what causing it and how I can fix that since this just appeared a few days ago.

In options, go to the advanced tab and see if any of the checks under general accessibility are marked. When I check the first one, I get the same line you are mentioning. Uncheck it and it should go away.

The problem has been solved, thank you. Not sure who checked that box, but I'm glad that I don't have to deal with it. It was getting very annoying.

BTW, that line is called a cursor.

as for Beefy's problem, NTFS boot sector is used if its a boot drive, if its just a storage drive boot sector has nothing to do with it. NTFS file system is corrupted, in which case a format is the only option, im afraid the info is lost. One thing you can try though, take out the drive from the enclosure and connect it straight to the motherboard. Maybe its the enclose thats damaged. See if the PC is reading the drive from the motherboard. And if its not, then you have my sympathy.
I'm not ready to give up just yet.

I tried the drive in two different enclosures and installed it in a case and connected it to the motherboard. It still showed the partition, but said it was not formatted.

I found a program called Zero Assumption Recovery and was able to recover 94% of the files.

And the files work? not corrupted?

The files we've tried so far are working. There's over 65,000 files so we didn't get a chance to open them all.
that sounds good, ill utilize that program if a problem ever occurs to me. Thanks for the update.

Techie Q: How to Printscreen a DVD from WMP?

Need some help urgently...I need to screen-capture, or printscreen a still from a DVD for a project. I've done some research online, and learned that in order for the printscreen button to work, I need to turn off the "Use Overlay" feature in Windows Media Player (which I have done) and also disable hardware acceleration in the Media Player (also, check!). But it's STILL not working...

And here's the catch - this isn't my personal computer, so there are a bunch of things I can't do, such as download a new player like GOM (which has a screencapture feature) or disable hardware acceleration through the control panel.

ANY ideas? Really could use the help...thanks!

What other players are already installed on the system? I used to be able to get caps from Real player, and VLC has a cap feature.

here is a crazy idea, if the computer you tried it on can not be modified due to admin restrictions (which can be easily bypassed) put the DVD into your computer and use a different media player.

Windows 7 Help

Ok, I have just one question here regarding Windows 7. See I ran that Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor program to elaborate if my PC is compatible for it. It passed everything except that I have less than 1GB of RAM in my PC (around 800+ MBs of RAM). Now would you guys recommend that I need to upgrade the RAM before finally installing 7, or just install it already? And yes, I bought through Microsoft themselves and for... College student discount: $29.99 for the Windows 7 Home Premium edition. That's how much I had to pay. Awesome.

Well first, this should have been posted in General "Computer Issues Thread" where everyone can submit their questions/comments on computer issuers.
And yes, you need 1GB of RAM for Win 7 to function properly. You have to buy the 1GB of RAM, not add to the existing one. Different RAM modules dont work well with each other.

As long as you're opening up your computer and plunking more RAM in anyway, you might as well go all in and skip straight to 2 GB. Unless your mobo is so old that it can't support it, there's no real reason to have less. It won't cost that much more and it'll make a difference, especially if you're installing a new (read: probably more resource-heavy) OS.

Check out Crucial.com if you plan on purchasing RAM. Their front page will help you determine what type you'll need and how much your PC can support (with either the PC vendor or motherboard manufacturer, depending on if you bought a PC or built one yourself). Plus they have have pretty good prices.

Do check out Newgg.com or Amazon.com for their RAM prices before you buy though, they can have better prices (in addition to free shipping), so they're well-worth a look.

Crucial is not a very good RAM brand, neither is Kingston, PNY or other ones. The only ones I could recommend are OSZ and Corsair brands.

Even if you don't wind up buying from them, their web tool to determine how much RAM your system can support (and in what configuration) is very useful and user-friendly, though. Figuring out what kind of memory your system needs can be confusing, and if you're not a computer whiz, a one-click solution is beyond nice.

Unless you're a "gamer", those brands will not be any trouble.

Exactly. I find it's at least helpful even if you don't buy from them to know what you need. The last RAM I bought turned out to be some OSZ brand from Newegg thanks to a good sale, but I wouldn't have known what to get without Crucial's guide.

definitely, i wasnt saying that tool is bad, just their product.

Being a "gamer" has nothing to do with this. RAM quality is extremely important if you want to have a stable system. and any of those brands will give you trouble, trust me, i know. And you didnt just get "some OSZ brand". OCZ just happens to be the best RAM brand in the market today, so you lucked out that you got a good brand for a good price. Trust me when I say this, RAM quality is extremely important. The difference of brand names for RAM is the most crucial in all of PC components out there.

Podcasting tips?

Hey, guys!

So, I've got a podcast file (mp3) sitting on a hard drive and need a free place to put it on, with a preferably large amount of space. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tomato
