The "What'cha Been Playin'?" Thread

Dynasty Warriors 8
Been under a lot of a stress from work as of late, and this has been my go to game to deal with all of the pinned up anger. Been thinking about getting DW8XL, but haven't really given it much thought.

Guilty Gear XXAC+R
Been playing this a lot as of late (as well as watching footage of Japanese players). Those who don't particularly care for Capcom fighters, I'm beginning to understand why (I see it a lot with this and BB). The amount of freedom that's given to you is practically non-existent in your Capcom fighters. Not saying that's a bad thing, but when I hear/read things along the line of find your playstyle, they mean it in these type of fighters (airdash fighters). You're not going to find 2 players playing the same characters play the same way. Anyway, before I get ready to go off on some rant, I'll stop there. Been playing and getting a better understanding of Johnny, although I should probably get a better understanding on how to do the mechanics (duh, should've been the first thing I started with). Anyway, fun stuff.

I will say this when it comes to SSF4. Great game, but too much trollish garbage for me as of late.

Edit:

GGXXAC+R update:
Ended up dropping Johnny. Mist Canceling into combos is very hard for me so I'm gonna be using Sol and Order-Sol. Go from 1 badboy to another. The cast of characters in GG is pure joy.

As of late, I've been mainly playing Don't Starve and The Binding of Isaac.

In Don't Starve, I have only played as Webber last week because I was doing so well as him. I managed to survive to Winter and I'm living easy through it thanks to preparing for it. I'm now working on building a teleporter out of there by finding all the artifacts. I'm so close to beating survival mode.

The Binding of Isaac is one nasty roguelike top-down shooter where you play as a little boy who must brave through his monster filled basement using his tears as projectiles. You can't save and the levels are randomly generated. It was difficult, but I beat the game in a few hours, but you have to replay the game a lot to experience the whole thing, including the multiple endings. It's a really gross game, but at least the art style makes it less gross than it should be.

Here's the intro to The Binding of Isaac to give you an idea of the game.

Batman: Arkham Asylum
Instead of the musou games being my go to games for stress and anger, I've also gotten that satisfaction from the Arkham series as well and will be playing these games instead. That being said, I've always said that I didn't care for AA because it just felt as if something was missing. Stealth mechanics were nice, but the free flow, yeah, felt like it was missing quite a bit, and now coming from AC and AO, it's kinda hard to come back to play AA because I'm so used to being able to utilize a lot of the gadgets during combat.

Well alright, I finally beat Don't Starve's Survival Mode as Webber. It took me 26 in-game days; the longest I ever survived. I found the wooden thing and fully assembled it using the other things I found (a box thing, a ring thing, a crank thing, and a metal potato thing. Yes that's their real names). Once I fixed the wooden thing, I used it to teleport out of there. Now I can keep the items I had as Webber for my next game.

As a result, I gained enough experience points to unlock Wendy, who I am now playing as in the second world. Wendy is a little too somber for my tastes, but she lost her twin sister, so I guess she has a right to be so morbid. She's physically weak, but she has the flower her late twin sister, Abigail, used to wear. When it's in bloom, Wendy can use it to summon the ghost of Abigail to protect her.

Here's what the little alto flute looks like (by the way, that's not Abigail's flower she's holding):

Stopped playing Arkham Asylum. My interest in that game just took a huge nose dive when I got up to Croc's lair. I think I said it before, but after coming off of AC and AO, playing AA feels rather dull and incomplete.

Batman Arkham City
Yeah, so I stopped playing AA and went straight to AC, and while it's not all that different from AA, you'd be surprise at how much something so small can make something feel so much better. Being able to use gadgets during combat makes it feel a lot better to me.

I caved and bought Persona 3: FES for my PS3. It took nearly two hours before I reached Tartarus. Most of the game automatically controls your character to get from one talking scene to another. Obviously choosing dialogue option is important to maintain Social Links and raise your Charm/Academia/etc and I like those, but I wish they would just let me control my own character as I get from Point A to Point B. Does the entire game do this? I hope not. I came in expecting to play a unique RPG, not a visual novel.

I actually heard the intros to both Persona 3 and 4 are quite long, but you do get to play the game eventually. I haven't played them yet although I do own both titles. I just don't have the time to invest in long running rpgs at the moment even though I'd love to get back to playing them.

Batman: Arkham City
I left off destroying the jammers that Penguin had floating around. Been toying around with the costumes as well. I think I like the Sinestro Corp suit over the other costumes. I am getting better with the combat. Been utilizing the takedowns a bit more. Blade takedowns are going to take me a while to get the hang of though. I always get to dodge the first 2 swings, but that last one always get me.

I'm getting back into the fighters at full force. Although I will say for UMvC3, I'm still not sure yet. If I do get back into that game, I'd use Vergil, Spencer, Nova, Wolverine, and Hawkeye. Maybe some Dante as well. With the way the game is now, it's like it's you HAVE to have a team with Doom on it and you have to utilize TAC's, and while the game was hype back then, just watching this stuff now, it's very boring to see.

This week, I've been playing Blood of the Werewolf, Team Fortress 2, Serious Sam: The First Encounter, and ObsCure.

Blood of the Werewolf is a platformer where you play as a werewolf woman (wifwolf?) named Selena. She's on a mission to find the people who killed her husband and kidnapped her baby. Selena is normally a crossbow wielding human, but she becomes a powerful quadrupedal wolf in the moonlight. This game is challenging and you're bound to die numerous times (I should know...). Despite the difficulty and frustration, I'm enjoying this game. I already beat two bosses and I really want to finish this game.

In Team Fortress 2, I've been mostly playing as the Scout lately. I'm one achievement away from unlocking a new weapon and I'm trying hard get an achievement as I've already did the easy ones. The Scout is the game's fragile speedster: able to run fast and double jump, but has low health. Playing as him requires fast reflexes and good aim, as it's not easy to hit a target while you're moving and dodging so fast.

In Serious Sam, I've been cheating by using a walkthrough to find all the secrets in the game (and there are a lot). In the first level alone, you can find a secret rocket launcher, a double barrel shotgun, and the chance to fight several high-level enemies. I also found a secret level. Why am I trying to find all the secrets? Because this game just loves to dish out waves upon waves of enemies at the drop of a hat and I need all the help I can get. Also, it's fun.

ObsCure is a survival horror game that plays out like a campy teen horror flick. It was originally for Xbox and PS2, but now it's on Steam. I heard about it before, so I bought it to see what it's like. I have only just started, so I don't have much to other than it works very well with an Xbox 360 controller.

I haven't been to this thread in a long time! Here's what I've been playing lately:

Final Fantasy XIII--Although the last two boss battles were long and hard, I managed to finish Chapter 8.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes--I'm currently half-way through Chapter 3 in Story Mode. I'm loving this game so far! I love using Black Widow's invisibility ability!:D

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D--It's a very good game but it'll still take me a while to get the hang of it. I only made it through Level 1-1.

I just hope I can finish Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (PSP) before KH: 2.5 Remix gets released at the end of the summer.

Mario Kart 8. I'll probably be playing this quite a bit for a while.

Well, I just made it halfway through Chapter 9 of Final Fantasy XIII so far. Those Huntresses & Vikings take a while to defeat!

Last week, I've been playing Don't Starve, Team Fortress 2, Blood of the Werewolf, Super Meat Boy, and Sniper Elite V2.

In Don't Starve, I played as Willow and lasted 24 in-game days before dying. I was doing well, until Summer arrived and I died from overheating. This was my first Summer, so I wasn't prepared for it. However, lasting so long gained me enough XP to unlock WX-78 the robot and Wickerbottom the librarian.

Now I'm playing as Wendy and I'm doing good so far. I've found plenty of different resources to build structures and tools. Also, since I was able to make an ice box, my food won't spoil as fast. I did die once, but since I found a touchstone prior to my death, I respawned there instead of dying for good. I had to go back to where I died to collect my stuff, but fortunately my death was enough to summon the ghost of Wendy's sister, Abigail. Now I have a bodyguard to protect me in the unforgiving wilderness.

Here's my current progress in games:

Final Fantasy XIII--It took me a while to beat the big boss but I managed to clear Chapter 9!

Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, Aqua's Story--I haven't played this in over 6 months! I just cleared Deep Space and I cleared the Sinister Sentinel mission at the Mirage Arena! Next time, I'll try and clear both regular & Mirage Arena versions of the Deep Space Command Board before I head off for Neverland. I'll also try and do some more melding for Aqua also.:D

In the 38 cumulative hours that I've been playing Don't Starve, I finally encountered some boss monsters. Bosses are rare and extremely dangerous, but drop incredibly useful items that are worth getting.

My first boss monster was the Warg, a giant hound. I was playing as Wendy and was following animal tracks in hopes of finding a koalefant. I found a Warg instead. The Warg can call hounds to his aid and I was soon surrounded. Despite being being well armed and covered in armor, I knew I couldn't take them on my own and ran. The Warg and his hounds were on my tail, but I had an ace up my sleeve. I lured them into a herd of breeding Beefalo. When Beefalo are in heat, they attack anything that gets near them. They made short work of the Warg and hounds and I had a nice supply of hound teeth for crafting.

The second boss monster I encountered was the Treeguard. Treeguards are pine trees with arms and legs that appear when someone chops down too many trees. I was playing as WX-78 and was just exploring when I came upon not one, not two, but five Treeguards walking around. I didn't chop any trees nearby, so I assumed it was a random encounter. Fortunately they ignored me, but a nearby pigman tried to fight them. The Treeguards made short work of the pigman and I snuck in to pick up the piece of meat he dropped. I made camp far away from the Treeguards, but I bet I can find a way to use them to my advantage.

Called myself playing MGS2, and as epic as I think that game is (despite the flaws) my heart sinks every time I think about having to escort Emma, or run around without my weapons. I dread those parts to the fullest, and I lose the desire to finish that game.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
So in return for not finishing MGS2, I moved onto this masterpiece. Just started so I don't have anything to say as of yet, outside of it's been a while since I've played this game. CQC might be rusty and make me scared of the last boss fight.

Mass Effect 1
I bought it again for the 360 and haven't touched it yet, (thanks SF4). Figured now would be a good time to start it up, especially since I plan to buy both a PS4 and X1, but for the PS4 I plan to buy Guilty Gear Xrd and most of my time will be focused on that game. Anyway, instead of playing as the usual Soldier or Vanguard, I might try out being an infiltrator or something. Want to be similar to Garrus in a way. Curious if anyone's played as something other than soldier or vanguard? What was the experience like (combat experience). Did it make the game harder or easier for you?

Then there's the guilty pleasure I've been soaking in for a little bit.

Yugioh 5d's 2011: Over the Nexus
I beat the game, and while it can be addicting, it's also annoying, especially when it comes to turbo dueling and playing that mini match game when you're trying to get a single card. Anyway, no much to really say here either.

Well I beat Don't Starve's survival mode again. This time I did it as Wendy. It wasn't easy because of the red hot Summer, but I came prepared this time. I was able to stay cool long enough to build the Wooden Thing and teleport out of there. I lasted 30 days and acquired enough XP to unlock two more characters: Woodie and Wigfrid. There are a few more unlockable characters, but they need to be unlocked in adventure mode.

Speaking of Summer, Summertime in Don't Starve is hard; harder than Winter in my opinion. Everything becomes sepia-toned and noises sound distant. The heat and lack of rain causes plants to wither and objects to spontaneously burst into flames. If you're exposed to the Sun, you'll start to overheat and eventually take damage from heat exposure. Fortunately, there are ways to stay cool. Eating cold food (like ice and meloncicles), wearing certain clothing, holding a chilled thermal stone, being near an endothermic fire, and staying the shade of a tree can delay or prevent overheating.

If the Summer heat don't get you, the Dragonfly probably will. A dragon and fly hybrid, the massive Dragonfly flies about burning down trees with is lava spit and feeds on the resulting ashes. Killing one is not simple. Not only does it have a lot of health, it will become hot with rage when struck. The enraged Dragonfly will create flaming shockwaves and give off lots of heat. If you somehow kill one it will drop scales that can be fashioned into powerful armor. I've yet to encounter one, but I want to.

I decided I wanted to re-play some old PS1 games this summer, so the first one on my list was Crash Bandicoot.
Seeing as how gathering every gem in the first game isn't mandatory to unlock a "true ending", I decided to just run straight through it without doing so.
If you do that, the game is really short. Like, maybe three hours long.
I've got the other two games downloaded onto my PS3, so I'll replay those some time before the summer's over.

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn
I made it into the Belinsk Ruins area.
Which, if I'm reading these walkthroughs right, is the last major area in the second third of the game.

Mario Kart 8
Gold trophies in both 50cc and 100cc modes.
Trying to get gold trophies in 150cc mode, even with two other people helping me, is proving quite the challenge. Best I've been able to manage so far is a bronze trophy.

Here's what I've accomplished in KH:BBS, Aqua's Story--

I cleared Neverland & The Mysterious Tower, I won in regular & Mirage Arena versions of the Deep Space Spaceship Command Board, I cleared the Dead Ringer mission at the Mirage Arena, and I went back to Deep Space and found the rest of the treasures. I'm now back in DisneyTown trying to get the rest of the treasures. I'm also trying to clear the Combined Threat mission at the Mirage Arena also. It'll be a while before I head for the Keyblade Graveyard.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Still one of the greatest games ever

Street Fighter 2
Like the greatest Sonic game, I played it on the Sega mega Drive 2

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
