"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

I watched Clone Wars but never on a regular basis so I'm missing episodes everywhere. I kinda always felt like I should watch it all being the Star Wars fan I am, so this is perfect.

I don't care about Clone Wars, but it's good to see the Evangelion 2.22 movie night set, inevitable as it was.

Hopefully, EVA 2.22 will get a promo in advance this time. And I'd love to see Black Lagoon on there. Also, yes to remastered Cowboy Bebop episodes.

If they got remastered Bebop, they could probably run it uncut (outside of minor language bleeps) this time around

Those Bebop Blu rays look pretty damn good.. I'd stay up 6 hours just to re watch it for the 6th time

The Clone Wars = Meh. Nice to see they're adding more variety to the lineup, but couldn't they pick something better? I really hope it's just filler until something better comes along.

Evangelion 2.22, though... :D

The Toonami Tumblr gave a longer explanation of the whole "filler" situation on Clone Wars.

Anonymous Asked: I personally feel like everyone's overreacting to this "filler" thing, and that they need to understand that TV is more complicated than they think. However, on the surface it does look hypocritical to want to skip certain episodes of Clone Wars for the same reason that people want you to skip those last 100 episodes of Naruto, so I can see where it's coming from. Still, they also don't understand that one is free and the other cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, or more.

We’ll go ahead and answer this one so people can stop flooding our inbox. Clarification: We’ve been ASKED by the network to skip the super slow/irrelevant/kiddie episodes of Clone Wars. Our preference would be to run all five seasons of Clone Wars from beginning to end. That said, we don’t consider the (few) eps we are cutting “filler." FILLER, as referred to by anime fans, is a story arc that takes place outside the source manga a show might be following. Obviously, that’s not what Clone Wars is (unless you consider THE ENTIRE SERIES filler, which, go away). Beyond that, there’s a huge difference in cutting some episodes that have aired multiple (10/15 times each at least) times on CN, and cutting PREMIERE episodes of a show (or episodes that have aired once or twice if we’re talking about Naruto). And let’s not forget, those 100 etc eps of Naruto are still A YEAR AWAY. We don’t even know if we’ll still be on in a year. It’s absolutely ridiculous to us to worry about this mythical possible falloff from airing Naruto “filler" a year from now. This all seems to be a legacy of the myth (and trust us it IS A MYTH) that Naruto and it’s “filler" killed Toonami, which we’ve refuted multiple times. But we wanted to let you know how the decision re: Clone Wars came about because we don’t want you guys to think these decisions are capricious. We wanted Clone Wars, we were asked to make this concession if we aired it. We honestly didn’t think anyone would really care…

That’s about the size of it! Hope that clears it up for some of you.

OH and BTW: Promise we won’t skip stuff like “Rookies" etc and some of the really special/badass standalone eps The Clone Wars has. We’d like to ask you to trust us. Hopefully we’ve earned it!

-Love, the Toonami Crew

I'm kind of hoping that the first episode,"Ambush", will be one of the episodes skipped. I've always felt that the Malevolence arc that spans episodes 2-4 would have been a MUCH stronger opening for the series proper, and "Ambush" definitely falls under the category of a slow Clone Wars episode.

Really, would you want to start off seeing Yoda wandering around a desolate planet for half an hour with three clones, discussing the philosophical side to the clones existence while running from an Expanded Universe villain you barely know yet? Or would you rather watch Anakin in a big space battle against General Grevious to try and take down his warship?

I think it's cool that Toonami is airing Star Wars, if not just because it'll keep the block from being anime only, but I feel that Toonami is airing every single TV-PG Cartoon Network action show except for Young Justice and Green Lantern, both of which I feel would be great for Toonami. But I guess copyright gets in the way...

I'd rather earnestly see the former because this is the first of many episodes that touch on seeing the Clones as individuals and not just an unified army under command. The problem for me with starting a story, a visual one at that, by purely giving constant fantasy-like action is that it can be very superficial. It's important to establish characters to care about that the story will revolve around in the long run. And in the case of the Clone Wars, the stories don't just revolve around Anakain, Obi-wan or even Ahsoka. They also revolve around the Clones.

Besides, I like the idea of the Clones being given words of wisdom by Yoda on the battlefield. I've learned that part of makes a character grow and become more compelling is when they're being taught what they need to known to move on in the story by someone who can provide that skill and wisdom, be it physically, mentally or emotionally.

I think they did say they tried to get Young Justice, but DC shot the idea down. They probably don't feel comfortable putting their animated TV productions on a block aimed at adults, even if said TV productions had much more adult viewers than kids on their initial airings.

Ah, the next EVA movie. Goodies. My sister actually stayed up to watch this one with me so I guess we can do another of those girl nights for some random anime movie.

Not so excited about Star Wars. Never was a fan of it but it'll be on pretty late anyway so guess it won't affect me much.

Yeah i'm still surprised that Eva 1.1 didn;t get a promo until the night it aired.

I think that was because having a movie night was a last minute decision and they didn't have enough time to get a promo out. At least they shouldn't have a problem like that with the next movie night.

I'm pretty annoyed at them showing Clone Wars, though I understand why thy are. It's ugly and doesn't keep my attention though. Bleh

Less related question: Obviously, we end up talking about acquisitions we want and don't want in this thread pretty often. Would it be ok to have a thread about that? Not a list thread obviously, but a civil "I'd like to see this show, here's why" and "I don't really think that would be a good fit for Toonami, here's why" sort of thread.

Such a topic just seems like a slippery slope that would end up with lists and poorly-worded reasoning to skirt past the "don't be a list" rule and lead to horrible fan schedules (that's a bit redundant since all fan schedules are horrible).

Aside from what Matt said, it probably wouldn't be a good idea due to the "WAH AMERICAN CARTOONS DON'T BELONG ON TOONAMI" comments it would likely spawn.

That's true enough . Though I never understood why people feel that way. Toonami always had American cartoons on it..

Actually FWIW we had at least one non-dumb and very long thread like that in the past (that "This should come to Toonami" thread, or something like that), and I don't think the anime-only militancy was or is very strong here anyhow. This uberthread is good too, just thought I'd offer that reminder.

Any Star Wars toon fits on Toonami, of course. It's Star Wars! It's a huge franchise everybody knows and, more to the point, action and adventure IN SPACE. Questioning its place is like asking why Dr. Who is on BBC America. I just wish it were likely we'd see Tartakovsky's 2D shorts again.

I agree. I'd love to see them air it like a movie again--all 25 chapters in one go, like they did back in 2005.

While this year it will be all about Space Jam's 30th anniversary, at the same time, its 2021 not-so-big sequel/reboot film also celebrates the milestone of 5 years since this month
