"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

I'm sorry, people comparing SAO to Pokemon fan-service wise are crazy. Pokemon is almost literally as tame as it gets. C'mon...

I agree that the comparison is crazy and that Pokemon is pretty tame. Acting as if there is no difference between the two in regards to fan-service is just ridiculous.

Why is it every time I try to make a joke, nobody follows and assumes I'm still making a serious argument anyway? Guys, I was using the subject of, "awkward and unnecessary fanservice" as a setup for a joke regarding that scene I presented. All I asked for in return is to play along with the joke, that's all. Don't reply to it as if I'm making a genuine argument, okay? Jeez!

To be fair, it can be pretty difficult to tell if someone is joking online. I definitely have that problem for both online and in person discussions and aside the last couple of sentence, I thought that you were making a genuine argument with your comment too.

I like Toonami's schedule as of now, but I was thinking on how to improve the schedule in the future. Maybe Saban and Marvel might be involved in this.

Sonic X (Uncut)
Now that Saban Brands got the rights to Sonic X, they can use a different voice cast to reflect the uncut edition. Sonic X had an edited English version that currently airs on the CW's Vortexx block and takes out unnecessary, objectionable content. When Sonic X replaces Bleach after that show finishes its run (Bleach ended in Japan already), Sonic X will air an uncut edition in lieu of Naruto and Naruto Shippuden.

In the uncut edition, the original Japanese soundtrack is kept in, and the script will be changed to be accurate to the Japanese script. However, profanity gets removed on TV. If Saban was to release uncut English DVDs of Sonic X, the profanity would remain intact there, but not on the adult swim airing (like in Robot Chicken, Aqua series and Family Guy).

Naruto and Naruto Shippuden (Uncut)
With Disney XD (in the United States) no longer having Naruto Shippuden, it now lies under adult swim's Toonami. Unlike the Disney XD version, Naruto and Naruto Shippuden will air in their uncut forms.

One Piece (dub produced by 4Licensing Corporation)
This is a gag and comedic dub, and blocks like Miguzi and Toonami (old) aired the 4Licensing Corporation (formerly 4Kids Productions) version of One Piece first on Cartoon Network. This not only includes the 4Licensing voice cast, but will retain the old script, edited episodes, Roronoa Zolo and the One Piece rap opening. This was not aired enough, but Sonic X (during the 4Kids TV days) lasted longer in TV airings.

Iron Man & Fantastic Four (both 1994 cartoon series)
This is a shame that these two Marvel Comics shows and Naruto Shippuden got removed from Disney XD. To make up for the rest, the Iron Man and Fantastic Four cartoon duo from 1994 would be great additions to Toonami, depite not being anime.

Star Wars: Clone Wars (2003)
Due to the fact LucasFilm was bought by the Walt Disney Company, Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) should air new episodes on Disney XD, not on any part of Cartoon Network. Cartoon Network only produced the 2003 series as a CN Studios original, and should be reran more often.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX & 5D's
To compete against today's Vortexx schedule, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and 5D's will air newly-dubbed episodes produced by Konami's in-house dubbing company, 4K Media Inc., to complete the dubs by one hundred percent. 4Licensing Corporation left GX and 5D's incomplete, but be glad Konami is here to complete the rest, if they ever have the time and money.

I don't see any of those as good moves..... besides the naruto part which will bring ratings and the 4kids one piece dub is just terrible but this is all just my opinions...

Those were like, not good suggestions for Adult Swim Toonami, and other than the Uncut One Piece and Shippuden that they are already doing I'm fairly certain they will be getting none of those.. I mean Genndy Clone Wars is good but they've aired it and don't currently have the rights and it's old.

Uncut Sonic X wouldn't fit with Toonami at all and I doubt that they would put that much time, money and resources into making an uncut dub for a series that was made a long time ago. Besides that, I believe that 4Kids was able to sub all of Sonic X, so that would satisfy the small audience of those who wanted to see the series uncut.

They're already have Shippuden and they'll start airing it next week, along with the first fifty-two episodes of Naruto. They already have uncut One Piece and no one wants to see the 4Kids dub again, at least not on TV when we actually have uncut One Piece.

While having more shows on the lineup that aren't anime would be nice for diversity's shake, I don't think that Marvel, or Disney for that matter, would want their shows on a block aimed at adults. Maybe one of their direct to DVD movies would be more possible, along with some of the DC DVD movies, but I'm not sure about that either. I believe that they've said that they can't get a hold of the first animated Clone Wars too.

Again, even uncut dubs of those series wouldn't really fit Toonami and there's no reason for it to complete against the Vortexx. Both blocks are targetting completely different audiences. Besides that, Konami isn't here to complete the rest. They're here to manage the anime in general and work on current series. There's no financial reason for them to go back to finish GX and 5D's, especially when they weren't even that successful when they were premiering episodes. As much as I'd like to see them get a complete dub, it isn't going to happen and I'd settle for legal subs. In any case, neither show would fit on Toonami at all.

Those were literally the worst suggestions ever. DO YOU EVEN WATCH TOONAMI?!?!?!?!

Why did anyone respond to Runo's post? That was troll bait if I ever saw it.

As I said months ago, a better analogy would be to compare SAO fanservice to Monogatari and Dog Days Dash fanservice.

FTR -- I actually don't really care about it until the second arc mainly because I've seen much worse (including said second arc).

EDIT -- ...annnnnnd I'm late again with this.

I had a feeling that you'd bring up that moment and yes I am aware that it happened. I've watched Pokemon since I was ten for goodness shake, so the chances are excellent that I'm aware of what happened in any of the series that have aired in the U.S. and at least vaguely aware of what's going on in the Japanese version. There's a pretty significant difference in my opinion. While I'll agree that it's awkward and unnecessary, I don't think that May undressing to her bathing suit is quite on the same level of showing girls in their underwear for no good reason or focus on their moving breasts whenever they get a chance. Her bathing suit is still pretty modest all things considered. They aren't focusing on her body, but rather just removing her clothes for a comedic moment. Don't get me wrong. It is still fanservice and like I said before, it's unnecessary and a bit awkward to say the least, but it's nowhere near the levels of what Sword Art Online does. The fanservice in Sword Art Online is much more blatant, jarring and distracting than that moment from Pokemon is. This moment is tame by comparison and if you can't see a difference between this and Suguha dressing to her underwear to play a virtual MMO or the focus on her breasts while taking a bath, then I don't know what else to say.

I was specifically responding to this comment:

Considering that SAO has underage fanservice, molestation, and incest, I can see why people would be annoyed that it's drawing in viewers.

My point was to demonstrate that "underage fanservice" is so ubiquitous in anime as to even be present in children's shows, and maybe we shouldn't be making blanket statements like the above, because if you hate any show with "underage fanservice", you might as well just not watch anime. As for trying to guess the intent of the show when doing fanservice, whether it's comedic or lascivious or just to show a character in a more vulnerable state so as to engender empathy towards them or something else, I don't think its always so obvious. But people are very quick to jump to the lascivious conclusion, and I think that's just because cultures outside of Japan aren't used to seeing it. In Japan, it's so common that they probably don't think twice about it most of the time, especially when it's as tame as what SAO has (and yes, it's very tame compared to most anime).

So Toonami wants a good relationship with Aniplex, therefore they hate Soul Eater? And you call my premise horribly flawed.

I was unclear. What I meant was that, if you believe they put SAO on their top 10 list just to make Aniplex happy and don't actually like it, then by that logic they must really hate Soul Eater if they don't even want to bother to mention that on their list. I don't actually believe they dislike Soul Eater, or SAO for that matter.

There's still a huge difference between May undressing to her bathing suit that was already on underneath and focusing in on Suguha's breasts while she's taking a bath though. The former might still be unnecessary, but it's really not at the same level as focusing on a teenage girl's breasts or having her undress to her underwear before logging into the virtual MMO. Acting otherwise just comes off as ridiculous to me. The underage fanservice in Pokemon is pretty tame, while its extremely blatant in Sword Art Online to the point where I could understand why it would bother/annoy people, so the comparison doesn't work. Besides that, just because underage fanservice is present within a lot of anime series doesn't make it okay in Sword Art Online, especially when that logic ignores that other series handle it with more tact and control than Sword Art Online does, so the argument itself doesn't really make much sense to me. I think that it's pretty clear what the fanservice in Sword Art Online is intended for given that they go out of their way to focus on the female characters' bodies whenever they get a chance to. I'm aware that there are shows out there with even more heavy handed fanservice, but I don't think that necessarily means that Sword Art Online's fanservice is tame by comparison. Perhaps compared to some shows that are even more heavy-handed/blatant, but I don't think that Sword Art Online's fanservice is tame compared to most anime nor does that make the way they handle fanservice okay. There's also the issue that there is molestation and incest in the show, which isn't as present in anime compared to fanservice and those are two other elements listed as to why people might dislike that this show is doing well. I think it's quite understandable why people would be bothered by them too. I don't even like Asuna, but seeing the attempted molestations on her is pretty uncomfortable. The incest subplot is just disturbing and it doesn't matter that Kirito doesn't feel the same. The fact that there is an incest subplot to begin with is enough for it to be disturbing.

I don't think that anyone said that they put Sword Art Online on their top 10 list to make Aniplex happy. People have said that they put it on their lineup because Aniplex wanted them to air it, despite how it didn't win that Facebook poll Aniplex set up, but I don't remember people saying that they put it on the list to appeal to Aniplex. If that was the case, they probably would have put it higher than nine. They most likely didn't put Soul Eater on the list because they wanted to focus on the big events of the year and Soul Eater really wasn't one of them compared to getting another show on the lineup before it was released on DVD, even if that show is Sword Art Online. They probably don't hate any of their shows, or at least they wouldn't admit it like that. I think that the closest we got to that was with DeMarco kind of admitting that GXP was a mistake, or something along those lines. I still personally couldn't blame them if they did dislike Soul Eater. It isn't Sword Art Online kind of bad in my opinion, but it isn't really good in my opinion either. They probably like it though.

I wonder if they'll ever pick up another Tenchi show (basically, the 3rd OVA). I know that GXP kind of turned off some people to that franchise, but it shouldnt as it was just a side series and had little to do with the main plot of Tenchi Muyo.

I'd love to see tenchi muyo war on geminar on toonami!

YES, ...YES, ...YES, ...AND [BLEEP] YES!!

They finally answered my questions after first posting them two months ago! While I did post more questions and even a couple of suggestions for shows to air, I was hoping that they could at least just answer one of them. That would've been enough for me this Q&A. But no! They answered four of my questions, all in a row! Again, I had more to ask, but I don't care! I'm just so happy they answered most of them! And they gave thoughtful, informative answers in response, which is perfect considering I put a lot of thought into those questions! Seriosuly, I wasn't expecting such an answer from the Better Cartoon Show question.

Man, this just.... made my day! If I had a list of, "Top 10 Moments from Toonami in 2013", this would be up there among the top 5! So thank you Toonami Crew, thank you so damn much! Y'all are the best!

.... crap

Next time, I'm setting myself an alarm for when they do these Q&As. 3rd straight one I've missed.

Bleh, either way, my one question WILL be answered when Space Dandy begins, so I'll see for myself anyway.

Some highlights:
* Bebop aired because of a special one-time deal with FUNimation. (Is Bebop's license $ as cheap, cheaper or a little more up with a new owner?)
* Toonami may do more custom openings. ( *thumbs up* )
* Evidently, a predominantly moe cast doesn't disqualify a show from Toonami as long as it has sufficient action.(moe?) -- (bring on the girls, I want the action!)
* Game reviews will usually be newer games. (as it should be)
* InuYasha will not be moved up. (I like it ending the block anyway, and doesn't need to be moved up imo)
* FLCL will never be cut. (*sniff* ... okay... who cut the FLCL?)
* They may do character profiles in the future. (that'd be fun to see!)
* They'd like to air Evangelion 3.33. (I'd like that too, it'd only have to air once and be done with)
* They're keeping the current look for now. (a-okay with me)
* Of the four movies played, they'd like to replay Akira the most. (I don't mind movies being replayed, but not sure how many times I'd want to see movies replayed, in hopes to keeping the trend of fresh content at the top of the hour -- perhaps repeat it in the latter half to where the movie ends by the time Toonami finishes
* GXP probably won't return. (HORRAY!!!! For those that like it and don't have it, they can order the DVD set cheap anyway, under $30)
* They'd rather forget about the Kids' WB thing. (I can hear that version's TOM right now... *cold chill*)

Any of my comments are listed inside the quote box. Perhaps anybody here can answer my Bebop question I colored orange.

To bring back Cowboy Bebop with new tapes it would likely cost as much or more than getting some first run shows simply because Cowboy Bebop is valued to the degree that it is by the producers and the public. I don't think FUNimation would rip Adult Swim off on how much they'd ask for Cowboy Bebop, they might even be willing to give them a better deal than they'd give other networks because of their long term business relationship but it only makes sense for FUNimation to get a fair deal on their end.

On a completely different note. FMAB has been airing on Adult Swim since February of 2010 with nary a week off besides special pre-emptions and it's one of the only shows they've doubled up on airings on a single night (not counting encores) and if they're intending to air it again immediately after this run ends, I implore them to reconsider. Fullmetal Alchemist needs a little break, ever since starting the original TV series in November of 2004, FMA has been on the Adult Swim line-up consistently since then which is 9 years as of November 2013, nearly a decade. GITS has been around for that long as well but it had more breaks than Fullmetal did so it just doesn't feel quite as burnt out to me yet. InuYasha has been on even longer yes but it has 167 episodes so it is a while away from finishing the current cycle. I like Fullmetal Alchemist, I really do but a little break would be welcome before they start the 64 episode cycle again.

I mostly refer to the same tapes they're still using -- I'd imagine new tapes would be up a little more, and it'd be expected for the work in making them remastered.
