"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

The monthly Tumblr Q&A just started.

I don't recall the normal pre-announcement, but I've been off Twitter for a few days.

Toonami
cariusdemi Asked: Will Space Dandy have a second go at 1130 when it finishes it's first run in a few weeks?
Probably, but it’s not set in stone. We’ll keep you posted!

This would seem to indirectly confirm that Space Dandy is only 13 episodes...

I assume they mean they aren't going to bother replacing the U.S. intro with the original in the reruns for episodes 1-7. There really isn't much of a point anyway, so I can't say that I think it's a big deal.

While Space Dandy has been doing really good, I really hope it doesn't immediately rerun in that same timeslot. Not only would I rather have something new air then, but chances are it might not do as well when its reruns starting off the block.

I have been confused about if the series would be thirteen or twenty-six episodes after a press release stating it had twenty-six episodes, but was taken down. Thirteen episodes sounds more fitting to me than twenty-six, especially when I don't know if Adult Swim would help fund twenty-six episodes. While I could see reruns of Space Dandy doing well, I agree that keeping it in the same timeslot wouldn't be the best choice. Starting off the block with reruns probably wouldn't be a good idea and I'd rather see them put something new there instead.

Space Dandy was confirmed for 26 episodes in Japan. However, it looks like they're going to delay airing the 2nd half until it's fully animated. Last month Thomas Romain, who works on the series, mentioned they had begun the animation process for episodes 14-26.

I feel like this mindset ignores that comedy reruns always lead Toonami as it is.

That said if Toonami is not going to expand then they must use their time slots wisely so the only reason to keep Dandy at 11:30 for reruns is because they don't have anything else they could premiere instead. I don't think moving all the other premieres up a half hour until Space Dandy has more episodes is the best course of action as we've seen moving shows tends to do more harm than good but I also don't want them to give back 11:30 after episode 13 of Dandy airs. So I'd rather it just stay where it is unless they have another premiere and while we do have our hopes, 5 premieres is still a lot.

Thank you for reiterating my point.

A: Its Paschal and I wouldn't trust anything that guy says further than I could fling him.

B: The source is an alleged tweet which he proceeds not to provide and I have not been able to find on my own. Also, nowhere in said post is Thomas Romain confirmed to say they're working on 14-26. Only that 1-13 are done.

C: It may be simply a misreading by Paschal which would not surprise me one bit. Again... he did not provide the tweet so this is all heresay.

D: I had already seen said post when I posted the first time. It was all that came up from the Google search other than threads pretty much confirming what we already knew. That the Japanese blu-ray solicitations only say 13 episodes.

E: The post is just a setup for a bad punchline of "OH THE INDUSTRY IS DEAD BECAUSE WATANABE IS A MEANNNNIE WAAAAAH!" If that were the case, how the hell would Captain Earth (Dandy's presumed replacement on Tokyo MX), The Coffin of Hitsuga, and Soul Eater Not get made?

At the same time, there's very many people that don't care for anime, even if it's mainly a comedy like Dandy is. It's not like Family Guy, Aqua Teen or Robot Chicken that'll bring casual audiences in. We've experienced this in 2008, where in one week we had Samurai Champloo return to a 1:00am rotation with whatever airing at 1:30am - as far as Champloo goes, it aired its first 4 episodes, then the next week, comedy was on in the 1am hour. Anime hasn't aired that early on a weekday lineup since. Champloo itself had its comedy elements, but I can't imagine if this were Space Dandy at 1am weekdays (just a vision) it'd do any better, because of those who choose to dislike anime in general. [hope I made sense here]

So anyway these are the scenarios for presumably April 5...

A: Restart Space Dandy at 11:30. This is the worst possible idea and will probably damage the ratings as nobody wants a rerun to kick off the block.

B: Put something else on. If Ishtar wants Attack on Titan, fine but they gotta announce it like this week or next (Anime Boston is cutting it waaaay to close to the grain).

C: Scuttle 11:30 and go back to Bleach as the lead-off. Probably the most likely solution much to the chagrin of some here.

I could see them putting Bleach back as the lead-off show to the block. While I don't care for it myself, it would probably be better for the block to start off with a new episode rather than a repeat. Airing Attack on Titans would be nice, but they might have announced it already if they were going to put it on the block in April.

With a Titan announcement there is always the possibility that they wait until the beginning of March to say they have it. They have done unexpected notices on their Tumblr and Funimation did say they'll be announcing English cast members before the con, so the two could possibly go hand in hand.

Given how 99.9% of Adult Swim is reruns, I don't think ratings are going to suffer much if Dandy repeats itself. They'll clearly watch things that have been aired 5,000 times already.

I could see them announcing the replacement at momocon, which is pretty soon.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
