"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

The problem with running Fate/Zero is even though its a prequel, its meant to be viewed AFTER Fate/Stay Night. Otherwise you spoil a lot of the latter.

Yeah. I don't know, I go back and forth on what's better to see first all the time. On the one hand, if you see Fate / Zero first then certain major facts get out and major villains are given away. A lot of Stay Night's twists get spoiled, there is no doubt about that. On the other though, if you experience Stay Night first, you know exactly how Zero ultimately ends.

Doesn't Fate/Zero originate from an H-game? You don't need to have played that, do you?

Nope. I understood the 2006 Fate/Stay Night anime without it. Moreover, I believe the new anime coming out this fall is doing its own thing and will likely diverge from the visual novel in many spots. Also, Zero is backstory to Stay Night (and started out as a novelization).

The problem with Fate/ZERO is that uncut the episodes generally hit the 25-26 minute mark. Even with the complete removal of the OP/ED themes and previews the show would still be too long to broadcast on American TV. Now, that's not affecting Black Lagoon for whatever reason (they're running that one uncut at 24 minutes) but they don't seem to be granting Aniplex the same mercy. If they were to run Fate/ZERO, they might as well make an entire timeslot devoted to infomercials, because they can't cut anything more out of Bleach or Shippuden to compensate.

Oh. Well. Hmm. That might be a problem. Might be possible to do some creative editing and have it work. Whether they'd think it'd be worth it to do so might be another matter though.

Again, this new version is coming directly off of Fate/Zero, so I'm sure with the level of rewriting they're doing to the plot, they won't try to keep you in suspense over things that anyone who had seen Fate/Zero would already know, as the versions of Fate/stay night that came out before Fate/Zero did.

It does have a broadcast version that worked just fine on Japanese TV, though, and I think that must've been the version that aired on Neon Alley as well, meaning AoA should already have the cut version with the dub synced up.

Actually, Neon Alley used the video version of the episodes and had to commercial free for at least one or two episodes, because of it. The alterations aren't simple either, as they'd have to get in the M&E masters for the cut broadcast, because amongst whole scenes being cut out, they also made snippets through the episodes. Aniplex might be able to secure these easier, but there's no guarantee they retained the mix tracks for those episodes once they made it for broadcast.

Well the manga's been selling bleh here, that doesn't bode well for DeMarco's interest.

The manga's been selling fine. The newest volume has been on the NYT list two weeks now. That's pretty good. And it's not like new Blue Exorcist volumes do much better, so I wouldn't use manga sales as a way to gauge the crew's interest in the show.

Yeah, at this point, I think Magi is more popular than Exorcist.

Yeah, I imagine that they would look more at the shows themselves rather than any manga sales in regards to what shows peak their interest. Good sales for the manga might be a plus, but I doubt that it would be a significant factor in determining whether or not they'd air a show.

Well ok, but Volumes 2 and 3 barely registered anything less than a blip on the NYT list.

It still made it though, which is more than 70% of manga can say.

So, according to Zap2It...

Attack on Titan is a dramedy for kids.

And to think we were having an argument about tv 14 this time two weeks ago. =P

So, the Q&A just finished and...nothing really remarkable this time around. Really the only notable things are an update to the top 5 most requested anime:

letmebeyourstaryu Asked: Since Attack on Titan is going to air in May, what are the most requested shows to be on the toonami block now?

DBZ, Kill La Kill, Hunter X Hunter, Sailor Moon and Jojo’s are the top requests lately.

and a clarification on why losing Inuyasha seemed to catch them so off-guard:

xxkawaiislayerxx Asked: I'm not trying to sound rude, but how did you guys not notice Inuyasha was about to end until a week before it did?

It was something our lawyers notified us of, and we had no idea there was a set end date coming up. We took over Toonami years after that deal had been made. We never like to do something like that.

Also, they confirmed that, yes, we will be seeing the full Attack on Titan opening:

young-happy-forever Asked: Are you guys going to put the full AOT opening?

The first show on the block will always have its open, so yes.

The rest was the usual "Will you air subbed anime?", "Why are you airing american shows?", "Are you hiring?", "Why did you cancel *insert show they finished*?" and "Can you air *insert show/movie they've already aired*?" questions.

There were actually a few other notable questions I spotted. A couple of which were from Jose Argumedo, co-host of the Toonami Faifthful Podcast and Editor of One Piece Podcast Japan.

Jose asked one question regarding the apparent return of Ninja Tunes music on the block (that was on Toonami and IGPX's TV broadcast before it was shut down on Cartoon Network):

Already asked this but it seems like questions get lost in the inbox with the rest of them, so sorry if you see this twice. What prompted the return of Ninja Tune music to Toonami? What was their reaction to returning to the block?

That’s… actually a long and complicated story we can’t share. But we’re happy to be using Ninja for the present!

One guy asked about having another contest after I think the one with the Toonami T-shirts on Tumblr (they said "on our own", so that might not be referring to the Sword Art Online contest):

When will you guys have another contests?

Well we did that last one all on our own so it took a while to pull together. We’ll do another one, but it won’t be for a while. Keep checking this tumblr for more details!

Six months is apparently the expiration date for a game before reviewing it:

How old is "too old" for a video game getting a review?

There’s no set date, but usually six months or so.

Apparently, one guy noticed a promo for Steven Universe back before it premiered on Cartoon Network had a track also used by Adult Swim and asked the Toonami team about it. It might've been this one.

This is a Little late but Toonami and Steven Universe had the same song in one of their promos. Did you guys not know this was going to happen or is it because Jason DeMarco controls promotions for Cartoon Network and Adult Swim?

CN actually has access to all the music you hear on Adult Swim, they just don’t normally use it.

Beware the Batman was an exception compared to other DC shows. Kind of reinforces that not every show is acquired for license the same way, even among DC Animation.

I remember you guys said Young Justice couldn't air on Toonami because it was a DC Comics show, but now we're getting Beware the Batman. Does this mean DC has decided to see if their shows will work on Toonami, or is this similar to ThunderCats where it's free to air until the rights expire?

It’s a different thing than the other shows.

Jason and Gill grew up with anime also, though it's mostly the same ones I've heard of before from other older anime fans growing up with anime. Makes me realize how lucky some of us from the 90s and early 2000s had it in regards to the quantity of anime we saw.

what was your first anime that u guys ever watch and enjoy.

Jason: Star Blazers, Force Five, Battle of the Planets

GIll: Star Blazers, Voltron, Battle of the Planets

DVR does help with ratings (though I'm not going to pretend I know how that even works or much DVR viewing contributes if even that much), but only if you watch what you record:

When I DVR Toonami shows does it help ratings? Or does it not really matter? I try to stay up but I always fall asleep so I just started DVRing the later shows so I could still watch them.

Yes DVR helps, but you have to actually watch them. Just recording doesn’t help.

Beware the Batman having different circumstances than the other shows would explain why they could get it. I still hope that airing it will open the door to more DC shows and/or DC animated movies airing on the block. I'm not too surprised with their top five requested shows. I'd still like to see Sailor Moon on the block at some point.

The only way Sailor Moon Crystal gets on is if Funi licenses it. Viz rarely ever involves themselves in Kodansha titles (Coppelion excepted).

That all depends on whether or not Toei allows for the new series to be licensed for release in the states.

That's true too. Toei's xenophobic insanity when it comes to the Sailor Moon franchise knows no bounds.

So basically the most requested shows for Toonami are a bunch of unlicensed snowballs in hell and Kill la Kill. WHY DOES NOBODY WANT SOMETHING THAT'S AVAILABLE LIKE MAGI!?!?

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
