"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

Even if they fix the AoT thing.... theres still the inconsistencies with Naruto amd Bleach not having their openings, everything else getting a cut down one and BL and SD having their full openings for some reason in the middle of the block. :-/

Personally I rather they not air any openings!

There really is no need to show them!

And you can always find them on YouTube if you want to watch them!

But thats just my opinion

I really don't understand the controversy over the openings. If you want to see the shows in their original packaging, don't watch them on Toonami. I'm not kidding, that's the point of Toonami; to add extra interstitials in order to give a unique feeling and brand to action cartoons that typically aren't as conventional to the mainstream. It helps to give them somewhat of a special identity. I agree with Shamar here, just go watch the openings online if you have that desire. None of them are blocked.

Every single show with music backed by Aniplex has their openings and endings taken down and blocked. This includes Naruto Shippuden, Bleach, Blue Exorcist, and Sword Art Online. Aniplex won't even permit the Toonami edits to exist on Youtube for long.

When it comes to Aniplex, NTV (which I had to fight off successfully a content strike from once), and ESPECIALLY King Record.
Vimeo >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> YouTube.

NOTE: This is in terms of "fair use" which Japanese companies don't seem to understand very well. Not like hosting full episodes. I do a lot of op dub overs which technically come under that due to timing and the parody clause, but tell that to those psychos at Star Child.

Unless it has the dub soundtrack, then I ain't interested.

Cooler's Revenge was ok ... FUNi's use of Metal as BGM was not (personally I enjoy Return of Cooler a lot more)

I admit that Drowning Pool and Disturbed as BGM was pretty cool, though. Still a replacement BGM track, but it was still pretty cool.

I would be very happy if the FUNi dub soundtrack with Drowning Pool, etc. aired. My favorite version of the movie.

I wonder if they have considered airing the full openings alternatively (premieres, not the reruns)...
Like if AoT gets a full op next week, then Bleach should get one the week after that and so on... Well, I don't know how much work they'll have to put into it, since they'll have to switch between cut and full openings every week but worth a shot... May be?

Maybe they could just post the openings to their website (toonami.com).

But I see both sides of this. On the one hand it would be cool to get more toonami, but on the other hand intros can be a major part of the show's identity and fans can get attached to them.

If people so greatly prefer openings, maybe they could overlay all of (not just some of) the credits on the full opening and not use the ED at all.

Endings are usually better designed for the purpose of displaying the credits though.

The truth is they'll never make everyone happy but they'd probably at least have everyone equally frustrated if they cut all the openings. Then nobody can really claim favoritism or inconsistency.

It would be nice if they put the OPs (and EDs) on Adult Swim's website. They pretty much troll the fans hoping for the One Piece openings with their upload of the 4Kids intro, so they should be able to stream the OPs and EDs.

Both Bleach and Naruto Shippuden run their openings on the Adult Swim website uploads that are accessible on a computer or using the mobile app. Shippuden is also in 4:3 for the record.

Personally, I don't think I'll ever understand the fascination that Toonami fans have with custom intros. Showing a full opening is not always practical, but replacing it with a "custom intro" just comes off as a form of unnecessary localization to me. My mind just rejects the idea completely, although my perspective is coloured by the fact that I've never had any kind of access to the block before, and can't really go back and replicate that nostalgic connection.

Whatever your perspective is on the matter of openings in general, I can confidently say that Attack on Titan's first OP is an exception and needs to be shown in full. There's more to the experience of watching a television show than just maintaining the core narrative, and AoT's first opening is a rare gem. It is totally arresting and unique and sets an insane amount of anticipation (not to mention expectation) for the show that follows it. The first OP went viral in a major way last year and that was instrumental to the show's success. I'm sure that for many people, the sole reason they checked out AoT to begin with is because they saw some kind of YouTube mashup using "Guren no Yumiya." I'd argue that it elevates the content, and I think the response to the cut version has been understandable. I mean, can you imagine if they edited "Tank?" I have a feeling that few would get behind that decision, even twelve years after Cowboy Bebop debuted. Attack on Titan's first OP should be regarded in a similar manner.

Same can't be said for the second OP, though. They can cut that down all they want.

I just want consistency.

1) Give all shows (besides the first one) a cut-down intro.

2) Give all shows (besides the first one) a Toonami-made intro.

None of this "some shows show full intro, some shows show edited intro, some shows show Toonami intro" mess they got goin' on now.

In my opinion, I'd rather have the intro period. I don't mind if they cut it down or show it full on any show, I just want to see the intro. :p

Toonami Arsenal. You can even download just about all of the openings and endings, uncut from Toonami shows past and present.

IMO, they made the right call airing Black Lagoon's full opening. It's too crucial to establishing the mood. You can't cut any of Revy's slow walk at the end either.

However, Dandy's is not. It's just a generic Japanese title sequence. I have no idea why Dandy's opening hasn't been shortened in reruns.

Personally, I prefer Black Lagoon's opening over its ending. Even though both are good and set the mood fairly well, I'd be okay with shortening the ending theme. I'm surprised that they've been able to air both themes completely for so long. As for Space Dandy, they probably kept the full theme for the first few reruns because it was in the first slot of the block. I was completely expecting them to go back to the short Toonami intro once it moved to 12:30AM and I think that's was the plan considering they said something about the Toonami intro showing up again eventually. Whenever they get the issue with the Attack on Titan opening fixed up, I'd expect that they'll use the short Toonami intro for Space Dandy reruns.

Here's the talkback image for Beware the Batman:

Also, could someone fill in for me and make the Bleach talkback thread for this Saturday? I'm not going to have time to do so myself.

I'll fill in! I may as well, I'm not doing much this weekend.

I thought that the talkback threads for Beware the Batman would still be in the DC Animation section and just mirrored here.

That is correct. Talkback threads for Beware the Batman will continue to be hosted in the DC Animation forum. Please go there to discuss the show as it airs on Toonami, thanks.

Will the threads be mirrored here as has been the case with DC shows airing on Toonami in the past?

On a related note, DeMarco confirmed on Twitter that we're getting some DC Nation shorts on Toonami starting this Saturday.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
