I think that DBZ Kai had the full opening for the first week it aired at 8PM, but I could easily be mixing it up with its regular airing on Toonami. I missed the start of One Piece at 8:30PM last week, but I'm pretty sure that it would still have the same shortened opening due to how it has a longer full opening than DBZ Kai.

Unless I was half asleep last week, One Piece got the intro tonight for 8:30 rerun. Maybe someone can confirm it was shortened last week?

It was shortened last week. I didn't catch the rerun this week, but I'd assume it was shortened as well. No way the full 2 1/2 minute opening will ever air in its entirety on US television.

Didn't know it was 2½ minutes long to be honest -- I also forgot to add "full" between "the" and "intro - as the 1m 30s intro (my use of "full") got played, it wasn't the 30s one.

So last week 8:30, short 30s intro, this week 8:30, 1m30s intro. Huh.

It was the shortened 1m30s version the previous week as well. There isn't a 30s version.

True the ratings are better but the time slot seems to play a major factor. Its possible a different show could achieve roughly the same results if placed in the same time slot.

I hope they eventually air one of their shows but there doesn't seem to be a lot in Sentai's catalog that would fit the tooanmi crews interests.

Then there are other factors like "we got this suitable show but didn't end up dubbing it the way it deserved" (hello, Guin Saga). Siiiiigh. Yes, I'm still bitter.

So it's Toonami's 18th birthday and that got me looking for something, but I'm having trouble finding it even on Toonami Digital Arsenal so I'm hoping someone around here might be able to help out. I could have sworn that there was a commercial promoting Toonami before its first broadcast on March 17, 1997. The only clear thing I think I remember about it is that it had some Voltron footage with the five pilots running toward the screen and a cool voice going "Toonami" near the end. I don't suppose anyone remembers this and knows a place where the video is? I'm starting to wonder if I'm mistaken and this was something that came along later instead.

Edit: Ah-ha, got pointed to this and it looks like this is it, some memories are coming back now. I must have mixed this with another promo.

So on his ask recently, Jason was saying he and Gill don't recognize that promo and don't think it's legit.

It honestly looks pretty legit to me. I think either they just don't remember it because it was a commercial from 18 years ago, or it might have been done by someone else at Cartoon Network.

Also, there's a blatant website advertisement in the description. It seems fishy...

I notice the emphasis put on the word "giving" in that reply.

Personally, I question how many of their (Sentai) licenses include broadcast tv rights, and of those how many have dubs. If we're to assume those two aren't the issue (they still could very well be) then that emphasis on "giving" could imply a money issue. Considering how FUNi, Viz and AoA regularly work out deals with Toonami it's not a terrible stretch to think that Sentai isn't satisfied with the money being offered, if any has ever been. That, or they just don't get along for whatever reason.

That's actually something interesting to consider especially since Sentai recently got home video rights to Knights of Sidonia from Netflix which has the broadcasting/streaming contract.

While my memory is fuzzy, one thing I feel sure of is that the voice I heard in the commercial back then was not Moltar's. The ThunderCats "Ho" bit and Johnny Quest stuff feels awfully familiar too. I'll still try to dig a little more just to be sure, but it's so well spliced together (and looking so VHS-era) that I'd be astonished to discover it's a fan job.

I asked Jason DeMarco a question regarding the promo:

Q: Are you sure that 1997 Toonami launch promo is fake? It looks pretty legit. Maybe it was made by someone else from the network?
A: We are researching, but you may be right. In the VERY early days of Toonami, on occasion someone else in the promo dept at CN would make a Toonami promo we wouldn't know about. This might be one of those. It looks like someone took a bunch of stuff we'd done and cut it together with our music and added bad VO and some other stuff. We DO know that none of the regular crew worked on it!
