"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

I'd like to see them pick up Psycho-Pass (Seasons 1-2, since Season 3 is Amazon-exclusive ), Gangsta, Blood Blockade Battlefront, Drifters, or The Heroic Legend of Arslan. I'd also like to see some DC Universe stuff, like Harley Quinn and Young Justice, since AS is now part of WB.

Jason DeMarco had another Q&A session on Twitter and here are some of the highlights:

Someone asked Jason what was the hardest show to get on the air and he said Black Lagoon:

Another person asked what were his favorite Toonami promos:

No surprise, but Jason confirmed that part of the reason they don't get certain shows are because of streaming services/premium networks:

Someone asked how he feels about certain fans freaking out about ratings and he's learned to let it go:

I don't think anyone thought Digimon was going to air on Toonami but Jason made sure to nip it in the bud:

I couldn't fit this tweet in the initial post, so I'm creating a separate one. Jason tells the story about how he almost got into a fight with Mike Lazzo over the ratio aspect for GiTS: SAC:

Honestly, I wouldn't have objected at all if they did get it. But yeah, the only window of time that Digimon was ever a remote possibility for Toonami was Savers/Data Squad back in 2007, and that went to Jetix. Definitely a franchise that would've been right at home on the old Toonami, but very out of place on modern Toonami.

I just hope, wherever the eventual dub ends up, the Adventure reboot gets the respectable modern uncut treatment like Tri and not a butchered 90s throwback like Fusion...

I think I remember he alluded to this in a previous Q&A, but didn't go into detail then. Guess he's open to talking about it now that Lazzo retired.

Welp we've all see the Cell games about 50 times but I'll keep it on as background noise anyway.

I'm somewhat surprised people would want the Digimon Adventure reboot on Toonami. It's kind of a similar case to Sailor Moon Crystal in that it would be nostalgic for long time fans of the series, but it would stand out like a sore thumb on the current Toonami block. If people don't like having so many shonen series on the lineup, then I don't think that having a toyetic franchise like Digimon would really help either. Having a hard time getting some shows because of streaming rights was expected.

I don't think the TV version of Tri would've been out of place on Toonami, but I guess DeMarco doesn't understand the nostalgia for Digimon.

Digimon Adventure Tri would possibly fit better given its more serious tone, but I'm not surprised that they didn't go for it. Digimon Adventure is nostalgic for a lot of people, but it's probably not the kind of show Toonami would really be interested in either.

I do wonder if Funimation will try to keep dubbing Black Clover at home like they're doing with My Hero Academia. They do have a good amount of episodes to air for now, but it might be kind of tricky to do the dubbing at home method. At least with My Hero Academia, they only have about four episodes left in this season while Black Clover is on-going. They may still try to dub as much as they can. I'm sure that they don't want to stop dubbing due to the financial impact it would have on their actors, staff and company in general, but it might be more difficult to work on on-going series like Black Clover compared to seasonal series. It might also depend on what series they'd want to make their main priority for dubbing too.

Eh, it would've been like "What's a Fox Kids cartoon doing on Adult Toonami?"

Might've worked if they were still airing stuff like Thundercats (2011) and Sym-Biotic Titan.

The Toonami promo showed some brief JoJo clips and I think one of them is from a yet to air episode. Is there any hint as to how far the dub is?

I'm also guessing if Crunchy Roll is the ones who will dub the new Digimon Adventure , they'd probably want to keep it exclusive to them as selling point , to have nostalgic subs come to them...

I would assume Toei will do it themselves, like they did with Tri.

Speaking of Digimon dubs, since Saban's acquired by Hasbro/Allspark, what if Hasbro made the dubs? I'm quite curious to see how Hasbro would handle later Digimon dubs...

I read a comment a few days ago that said they're about 10 episodes ahead in recording, but I can't remember where I saw it (I think somewhere in Reddit) or what their source was.

As for the clips, I think they are all from episodes that have aired (two clips from White Ice, a clip from Babyface, and, I think, a clip from Giorno vs Bruno back in episode 2).

I'm pretty sure Saban Brands let the Digimon license lapse not long before Hasbro absorbed them. Difficult to say how a Hasbro dub would be if they did get it, it's been quite some time since Hasbro handled an anime.

I'm feeling very worried for Toonami. This weekend, Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma: The Second Plate will air its season finale. After that, I wonder if Toonami will get rid of it or give it a one-week absence just to air a back-to-back Demon Slayer hour just to play its finale as soon as possible.

Also, if Toonami gets new shows after the Demon Slayer finale, I was really thinking if they should pick up Granblue Fantasy or Cybersix. The former is more likely possible because of the recent release of the PS4 fighting game of the same name. The latter, I really want it because we never had an uncut airing of Cybersix before, and I didn't like how Fox Kids gave it a butchered run. Also, since TOM 6 is now the current host, it makes sense to put Cybersix on adult swim.

2020 has been a dramatic year with all its cuts, but I don't see any direct reason to worry about Food Wars' Toonami airing. Season 3 will probably air right after it as has been the precedent for shows with multiple available seasons. It seems like Toonami lost on being the dub's premiere spot as Sentai gave it to Hi Dive first, which seems kinda embarrassing considering how niche the service is. Toonami is probably gonna be the place to see past its expiration date stuff. Considering Toonami can't get simuldubs because of current circumstances, probably some big show everyone has already streamed will air like Konosuba. Oddly, not being the only place to watch a dub doesn't seem to hurt ratings that much as MHA still has good ratings despite being available on Funimation first and Toonami decided to prioritize Dr. Stone and Fire Force over Demon Slayer, which started out in the back half of the block despite the dub not being available for streaming unlike the other two. Toonami somehow succeeds despite having only two and a half (most of Shippuden is on DVD/Blu Ray in expensive 13 episode sets, but not streaming) exclusive dubs. It's not the go to place like Funimation or Crunchyroll, but it is successful enough to reair what those services already have shown. Toonami has been kind of a second hand flea market kind of place these last few years.

Rights for the latter are probably very difficult to get as is with most 20+ year old cartoons. I think more Western toons would reinvigorate Toonami, but the competition from DC Universe has been an issue as I'm sure they want people to subscribe and pay to see Young Justice and Harley Quinn. Tartavosky forbade Primal from airing. As seen by Samurai Jack, Western originals probably have more hope than anime co-productions as FLCL sequels failed. Maybe Uzamaki will surprise, but there seems to be no hype from anime fans who watch Crunchyroll or Funimation instead of Toonami.

I found that Reddit post and assumed it might have confused JoJo with Black Clover, where that fact applies. Can't find any Viz statements supporting JoJo being that far ahead.

Cybersix's rights aren't difficult. TMS owns the show, seemingly everywhere outside of Canada. I don't see Toonami airing a 20-year-old show they have no history with, though.

Unless it's extremely successful in Japan, I don't see why they'd be interested. Digimon Fusion was such a flop it's almost certainly the reason Appmon wasn't dubbed. Yo-Kai Watch cratering is still a recent memory for Hasbro, so I'm not sure they're in a rush for more monsters. Nostalgia is powerful but I don't know if it's powerful enough to undo that.

Is Konosuba really that big? I've never heard of it outside of this thread, and I tend to keep up with anime fairly well.

It was pretty big in the anime community about 2-3 years ago, but I think the hype has died down. The ship has probably already sailed on it for Toonami. But then sometimes Toonami is late on the bandwagon with certain shows, so I dunno.
