Toonami Ratings

Venture beat Robot Chicken? That's a surprise.

They should try Robot Chicken premieres on Monday nights at 12AM to see how they do. Sunday's seemed like a stinker for much too long. Try premieres on weekdays and put the encores on Sunday or run some other unique programming, perhaps even giving that night to Toonami because there's every reason to believe some Toonami premieres could get similar ratings to what comedy premieres have gotten on Sunday lately.

Ratings for last week are in:

12:00 AM - Bleach - 1,205,000 viewers
12:30 AM - Samurai 7 - 910,000 viewers
1:00 AM - Casshern Sins - 721,000 viewers
1:30 AM - Eureka Seven - 655,000 viewers
2:00 AM - Sym-Bionic Titan - 554,000 viewers
2:30 AM - Thundercats - 493,000 viewers
3:00 AM - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - 437,000 viewers
3:30 AM - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - 442,000 viewers
4:00 AM - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - 406,000 viewers
4:30 AM - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - 373,000 viewers
5:00 AM - Cowboy Bebop - 347,000 viewers
5:30 AM - Cowboy Bebop - 350,000 viewers

Great job on Bleach and Samurai 7, and Casshern and Eureka Seven seem to have done well, too.
But ouch for Thundercats and everything after that getting a major drop in ratings.

Is this the first week Bleach beat the 9:30 Saturday Family Guy? Think so.

Not sure why the huge drop-offs for the non-premieres. Titan and Thundercats not holding an audience so well? I wonder if Halloween festivities played a part in affecting this week's ratings. People were probably too crashed out to stay up through the night explaining all the decreases, while Bleach with its ghosts and skeletons and crap seems like something people might put on during a Halloween party (and then a lot of them might have kept the TV on to check out the show after it out of curiosity).

The ratings for the first couple of hours for the block were pretty good, but Sym-Bionic Titan and Thundercats did have a noticeable drop compared to the past few weeks. It might be just more people to choose to sleep through the night rather than staying up to see those shows. The ratings for this week probably won't be that great, but it will be understandable considering the hurricane if that turns out to be the case.

Wow, the beginning half of the block was doing fantastic and then from Thundercats all the way down the ratings dipped a bit....

I still don't put much stock into the Nielson ratings system since it only accounts for a small percentage of who's actually watching, but still, I'm a bit bummed to see the decrease toward the end and thrilled to see the increase at the beginning.

The idea behind it is that Nielsen has gathered a representative sample of the American population, meaning that enough people are using Nielsen boxes to be able to accurately represent the viewing habits of everyone in the country. Then, when they get the raw ratings data from their sample, they are able to convert them to apply to the entire population based on the proportion of the sample that tunes in. So the numbers reported here are not just people who have Nielsen boxes, but are extrapolated to apply to everyone in the country.

From a statistics standpoint, this method makes sense. However there is no way to know for sure just how representative the sample is of the entire population, so it will never be a perfect system until all TVs have built-in ways of tracking who is watching which channels. And I doubt that will happen anytime soon, so for now Nielsen is indeed the most accurate method of measuring TV ratings.

Think what you want but I highly disagree. In fact, I've asked in the past and I'm pretty confident that I don't know a single person who takes part in the Nielson survey or who has a box, I certainly know for sure that all of my close friends don't and I don't think enough people in the U.S do to ensure that the numbers are even anywhere near accurate. It is accurate for those who take part in it, sure, but that's only a small percentage of people who own television sets coupled along with the fact that the average house has 2-3 TV's that are most likely being watched by different people who may not be watching the same thing. It may be the standard, but that doesn't mean that it's completely accurate either.

That's amazing for the premieres, although I wish Samurai 7 would drop a bit less from Bleach. Casshern now above 700K! Hopefully it'll end there. Everything from that point flopped horribly though. I wonder what happened.

FG 2013 CLE 1982 (wow!) BD 1231(-38%), Boon 1235, Bleach 1205 (-2%), S7 910 (-25%), CS 721 (-21%), E7 655 (-10%), ST 554 (-16%), & TC 493 (-12%). It's no surprise BD was the biggest loser, but both S7 & Sins have nothing to be proud of either. The drop offs for E7, ST, & TC are normal & the same can be said for FmA:B & the rest of the night. A stronger hold between 12:30-1:30a would have lifted the entire night as the rest of the block is more consistent. Hopefully it's Inuyasha:Final Act in a week or two when Sins ends. I think S7 may have greater appeal to that fan base than it does Bleach.

If you think BD's 38% drop is bad check out CH on Thu night. FG 2500, CH 1454 (-42%), SUV 1194 (-18%). Just 30 min after FG airs, [as] has lost 60% of it's viewers thanks to non-anim comedies. DEL 1013 (-16%) looks respectable next to that. Fhole 850 (-16%), Squid 875, & 1:30a AD 1031. I can not stress enough the importance of a strong show to lift a weakened block. AD's 18% gain on Squids rescued the night from the damage of CH+SUV. That's something TOONAMI needs as well.

Lol well how many people do you know compared to the population of the United States? Whether or not the sample is representative is debatable, this is why the more people are recruited for Nielsen the more accurate the measure.

Yikes CH and NTSF are stinking up Thursday lately and I seem to recall reading both were just renewed for another season but setting aside the total viewer loss the drop from 1.2 to 0.7 with 18-49 should have Adult Swim more concerned than they seem. Have they just given up on a their shows keeping Family Guy's viewership? It almost seems like they have at this point.

Animated comedy rocks on Thursday for some reason so perhaps the best course of action is to move Robot Chicken's premieres to Midnight on Thursday followed by Superjail to see how they fair in comparison. Then we'll know better if it's a problem with 12AM on Thursday in general or if live-action just doesn't keep the momentum. Then again Robot Chicken just got 0.8 with 18-49 the previous Monday and Friday so maybe one of those days is where the premieres should be and Thursday can be like the other weeknights instead of having the live-action shows.

Friday has certainly come into its' own for Adult Swim and it actually seems like the best night for Adult Swim to premiere original series because it's the one night their target demographic who work first shift hours could potentially stay up and watch. Sunday could get encores of those premieres or try some other unique programming.

It is good to hear the ratings are up a bit. I'm hoping the key demo ratings have improved more than the total viewer ratings let on.

I'm curious as to what the show could possibly be if it's a ratings helper that would also make people mad. Maybe something no one would think of, like..Persona 4 The animation (would anyone really be mad about Final Act? I could see not caring, but it's quite expected)

Given its very divisive nature among anime fans but broad appeal for AS viewers, Panty and Stocking?

Nielsen is without a doubt an imperfect system but it is the system the industry trusts & relies on when spending ad dollars. Every effort by a competitor to bite into their market has failed. Competitors are more involved with radio & net ratings. In the 80's & 90's there were about 14,000 metered homes providing overnight ratings in the top 50 markets. Now there are about 23,000 & 10% of that is located on college campuses. That's given [as] an advantage. Four times a year Nielsen makes an effort to measure markets outside the top 50. These are called sweep months & they involve a few million mailed out diaries. Sweep months then are the most comprehensive reporting months. Nielsen no longer relies on just the metered HH's for data. It collects data from the cable/dish operators as well & it does comparative analysis between that data & it's own in determing the Nielsen ratings. By & large the more comprehensive cable/dish data is in line with the metered homes. Nielsen's next big initiative is the portable people meter which will potentially measure millions for overnight ratings. That will include internet wi-fi tv's. I do not know why Nielsen is allowed to operate like a monopoly but I believe it has to do with the industry believing a single reporting company is a neccessity for the integrity of the ratings system.

Inuyasha

Jason DeMarco ‏@Clarknova1Ratings are up a bit, and I'm hoping our new show helps that too! Some of you will be into it, some of you will be mad.
While it's nice to see Inuyasha return in the DST hr, I don't think even IY fans are happy it's the first 2 ep's. If it's going to replace Sins with ep 3, it will be yrs before they catch up to Final Act. So I can see how some fans would be upset with that decision. If they jump to like ep 145 or something then I think fans will get excited.

I highly doubt this over hyped new show is merely Inuyasha returning. Especially when, unlike Eureka 7, it wasn't that long ago that Inuyasha was on Adult Swim. Besides, it wouldn't make sense to outright re-buy the entire series when Toonami has been stated to be on a very small budget. And if AS still had the rights all along, it would have aired on Toonami months ago if they really wanted it on the block.

Going by DeMarco's impression, I feel this new show is actually something new and fresh.

Edit: Correction, according to the updated backdoor schedule for Nov 10th, InuYasha will be a part of the regular lineup, but it is airing in the 5am hour and is not the show replacing Casshern.

backdoor schedule for Nov 10th
http://schedule.adultswim.com/servlet/ScheduleServlet?action=AS&theDate=11/10/12&timeZone=EST Rejoice! Black Dynamite is gone from the night! Now we can see what Boon & Bleach can really do with a nice lead from Cleve. There is no entry for 12:3a so that must be where the overhyped show will appear. At 1a is S7, TCats, STitan, E7. At 3a is FmA:B*2, CB*2, & IY*2.

ESPN's NFL Matchup preview show beat GitS 639 to 406 so maybe ESPN ratings do matter. Bronx is also tracking full week DSNY now & those #"s put TOONAMI to shame. Leading into 4am the Halloweentown movie avg'd over 1.5m & Suite*2 beat GitS*2 by over 600k. It's a good thing DSNY does not compete with [as] for advertisers in any way whatsoever. It does compete with it for viewers though & since DSNY is king in 12-17 on cable, it's a fair assumption the bulk of those live viewers are 12-24.

With the Live+SD cutoff being 3am, the last 3 shows have until Sun 3a before reporting & I think IY will likely show the biggest % gain in both SD, C3, & L+7D ratings.

Replacing Sins at 1:30 is TCats, followed by SymTitan, E7, FmA:B*2, CB*2, & IY*2.

InuYasha is not the new show, and Sins was never at 1:30. Samurai 7 takes over Sins' slot at 1am. The new show is going to be at 12:30. Currently, nothing is scheduled to air there.
