Toonami Ratings

Over on Twitter, Jason DeMarco stated that he and the team were quote "pleasantly surprised" with the ratings for the night.
So... yeah? I guess we're doing alright?

That does appear to be the case. If the Toonami team were pleasantly surprised with the ratings, then I would think that's a good sign. While the ratings aren't amazing, they're still pretty good all things considered and that does help with the block's future.

Anyway, those ratings for the return of the Midnight Run are pretty good. The series in the first few hours did pretty well and the 2AM hour did a lot better than I expected it to. That's pretty cool. As for Young Justice joining the block, I'm not sure how I feel about it. It would kind of work along with Sym-Bionic Titan and Thundercats and I definitely don't have a problem with Toonami airing more than just anime, but I don't know if it has a large amount of older fans like Sym-Bionic Titan and Thundercats do. I don't think that airing in the mornings when some people aren't awake to see it works as a reason to put it on the block for me when the episodes are available on Cartoon Network's website. I wouldn't be against it appearing on the lineup, but I'm not really hoping for it either.

well look here is how I see it, Toonami is back and I like it The only draw back i see is this why not show Deadman wonderland again a second time,
Because I did not understand it again, Look tom is doing the best with what he has for now, as far as YJ goes keep it in the 10.5 or 10:30am slot
because what else in at 10.5 or 10:30 Dragon ball Kai on cw, and on sunday nothing..

Young Justice gets better premiere ratings with 18-49 than any anime on Adult Swim. It gets 18-49 ratings comparable to Robot Chicken. I would say there's plenty of older fans. The most recent premiere got 0.79 with 18-49. Adult Swim wishes more of it's premieres got those kinds of ratings.

ThunderCats did better than SBT? How exactly did that happen?

..Because the whole idea of the majority of people hating the 2011 Thundercats was a false claim? :p

Thundercats has more fans at the end of the day.

Part of that could be because daytime airings tend to do better than late night ratings. Who's to say YJ would get those same ratings on AS?

If the ratings continue like this, I think they should move Eureka Seven to 2:30 AM and push Sym-Bionic Titan and Thundercats up by 30 minutes. Casshern Sins is ending soon, so it wouldn't really be fair to move it now, since a new show will be taking over soon.

Well, Thundercats is a known brand and people did like the 2011 show so I guess that would be the cause. Also, Sym-Bionic Titan failed to grow a legitimate audience and was a commercial failure, it also doesn't have 25+ years of brand recognition behind it so I'm sure the fact that Thundercats did better wasn't a big surprise to many.

Also, the original Thundercats was a stable on Toonami in the block's early years. That probably helped too.

Yeah, I think that the best thing would be to switch Eureka 7 and Thundercats slots and keep Symbionic Titan where it is, if only because Thundercats seems to be getting more viewers than Symbionic Titan so maybe they should air it before Titan to get the most of the show.

Well that's still pretty damn good. Poor Casshern.. Well, he will probably be off the block soon enough anyways. I still think CS is a really great show. But probably a bit avant garde for the [adult swim] crowd.

I think that Casshern Sins is a good series too. The themes its going for and the slower pace, especially in the first half of the series, probably didn't appeal to the general audience for Adult Swim. It might not be the kind of show that works for a weekly block too given its slow pace, but it is an interesting show.

Anyway, the ratings look pretty good. I think that it was a good idea to get rid of the repeat slots since that has probably helped the earlier hours in the block get better ratings. The 2AM hour is still doing pretty decently all things considered. I wonder if whatever they'll have to replace Casshern Sins after it airs the last episode will help increase ratings.

I think that if whatever replaces Sins is either fast paced and relatively new it should help ratings a lot. Though if it is a new show it would probably be in AS's better interest to have it switch slots with S7 but that should be rather obvious. Of course as much as I like the show, I can see almost anything that isn't as slow paced doing well in Sins's timeslot...

Ratings are looking pretty good though. The return of the Midnight Run really is doing a pretty good favor for Toonami since it's getting solid ratings all across the night. Hopefully this'll continue.

Boon 1173, Bleach 1049, S7 831, CS 738, E7 742, ST 662, TC 673, FmA:B*2 669, GS*2 648, CB*2 570

Bleach lost 11% (ok), S7 lost 21% (bad), CS lost 12% (ok), E7 gained 1% (good), ST lost 11% (ok), TC gained 2% (good), FmA:B*2 lost < 1% (great), GS*2 lost < 5% (good), CB*2 lost 13% (ok).

I read that DeMarco said they were pleased with the #'s, but I don't expect him to say otherwise after such a recent scheduling change. I don't see how he can be happy with the 12:30a slot especially when you compare DW's seasonal avg to S7 right now. That not only weakens the idea of expansion in 2013, but also the sales of movie, dvd, & game sales. The other ads are probably sold on a qtrly basis, but these more time sensitive products are likely monthly sales. Weakness in Oct, means less rev for Nov. Unless ....
something is coming in time for Nov sweeps that can be sold on it's own merit irrespective of S7 for that slot: Inuyasha's Final Act.

It's still unclear what DeMarco's policy is on 2nd runs, but I think GS & CB are exceptions. If IY appears that's probably an exception as well. I think the norm is 1 run as DeMarco is both looking to keep TOONAMI fresh & lower the cost of accruing content. The newness of ST & TC created some buzz, but their drops from wk 1 to wk 2 prove that some of that has worn off. Considering their CN ratings dropped substantially from their premiere's, it's possible the seasonal avg's may fall below the anime that has aired there in the past.

I don't think some of you understand the significance of YoungJustice beating TMNT in 18-49. TMNT premiered that weekend on Nick while YJ is well into it's 2nd season. TMNT had the Herculean Spongebob as a lead while YJ had the much weaker GreenLantern. The only ? for DeMarco then is how does the total 18-49 pool for late Sat morning compare to early Sun morning because age demog's are based on the total watching at that time whereas HH is based on the total watching vs the total out there. I recall YJ did even better in 18-49 in it's series premiere on CN than TMNT did, so TOONAMI should start from the Pilot if DeMarco has any interest at all.

... making room for a repeat run of Deadman or DRRR.
While I believe TOONAMI still holds the license for DW, they don't for Drrr. The fact that it's 1st run lost it's slot to the 2nd run of FmA:B makes it highly unlikely it will return. http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/20...tow-hardcore-pawn-conan-baseball-more/153330/ FG, AD, RC, & Greatest accounted for 17 of T50 in 18-34. While that trend is well below last yr's Oct-Nov, it's at least moving up again. Last Oct [as] scored 14 of the T50 for the month which is much harder to do. The Greatest pilot did worse than the Loiter Squad or BD pilot on Sun, but MUCH better encore #'s suggesting it could work on Sat. DeMarco should consider
VB, FG*2, Greatest encore, RC encore, Clev, & Boon as the comedy lead into Bleach. There's no $ reason to give BD a 2nd run on Sat over the encores of these new Sun premieres.

The British IT Crowd has been mentioned before for [as] but it still airs on IFC so I don't see that happening, but [as] could do an NBCUniversal: purchase the rights to produce an American version of a British show. That's a lot cheaper than acquiring the British show itself & I think [as] has the live-actor talent from their other shows to make it work. They should be able to produce their own IT Crowd at a cost comparable to CH.

Sat vs Sun: Bleach+S7 940 vs RC+Aqua+SJ+Squid 966. CS 738 vs Metal+Eric 711. That puts TOONAMI's #'s in perspective & sends a clear sign to [as] that the tried & true originals are showing great weakness now. [as] needs fresh new animated blood & better live-actor shows.

So much for beating Nick's TMNT in 18-49 & besting the rest of CN for the day in HH. Young Justice & DC Nation are history. I don't know if CN intends to bring them back but they were abruptly taken off the schedule as of last Sat. Dragons replaced them on Sat & Test on Sun. This further proves that CN is a LOT more about licensing rev than ad rev now. STitan, TC, GL, & YJ all failed in that dept for CN. SW:CW is fail proof as it's typically one of the best sellers every yr in licensing rev & I'm sure CN is getting some piece of that. But that doesn't mean much in syndication. My affiliate used Revenge of the Sith to introduce SW:CW to syndication. SW:CW aired at 12a then, & now it's been bumped to 2a. After the FOX AD shows, Cheaters airs before SW:CW. At least it's still b2b ep, but that's just 30 min before paid programming starts. I'd say that puts the kabosh on hopes of anime & other animated action being sold in syndication.

Not bad overall, I think that anything over 700k is perfectly fine seeing as how Adult Swim doesn't advertise the block as much as they could and considering the fact that anime is a niche market despite us fans wanting to believe otherwise. Personally, I think the lineup is stellar for the first 3 hours (tired of the shows they air during the last 3) and the bumpers and overall feel of the block is really quite amazing, I look forward to enjoying Toonami for years and years to come.

Bleach ends by 2014 & many think that will be the end of TOONAMI's last hurrah. Anything beyond that at this point seems like wishful thinking, but by the time Bleach ends more homes will have HD channels & I think that plays into TOONAMI's favor. DW, CS, ST, TC, S7, E7 are all in HD on CN/[as] HD & I believe that availability will continue to play a major role in TOONAMI selections. In the case of the lucky 7's, they were not avail in HD when they last aired on IFC so those fans are getting a new opportunity there. Very little programming on CN/[as] is available in HD. The new shows: Cleve, BD, S7, CS, E7, SBT, & TC are HD as well. AD is HD, some RC, Squids, Metal, & Aqua are HD. Young Justice was the only HD show on CN. All other programming is SD in wide-format on the HD channel. That suggests pre-existing contracts before those shows were avail in HD. That includes Bleach.

......

Yeah......I don't think so. Toonami has garnered too much fan support and the network seems to like the ratings it's getting from the shows it has so I doubt just because Bleach is ending in a couple of years means that Toonami's run will come to an end. Also, I've never heard anyone say that Toonami may be finished once one single show is dropped and because of the HD jargon, so yeah.......I'll be enjoying Toonami for many years to come.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
