Toonami Ratings

My guess is, Bleach didn't get that much of a drop in ratings the week before because it's likely many viewers tuned in thinking it would still be a new episode. .

Ya that's what i'm thinking aswell... Not everyone gets the message and will tune in only to be disappointed.
Really I'm not even sure WHY bleach has entered into reruns... i guess it could just be to give viewers a second chance to see episodes they missed not that toonami has stopped airing repeats, but it doesn't help the ratings... frnakly just for bleach, i would prefer they go back to putting a repeat episode later in the line up if they really want to give viewers a second chance to watch the episode

Well, it was doing pretty poorly for a couple of weeks and I don't think that they can wait too long for a show to pick up if it did that poorly. I really don't like the show and this particular episode made me want to drop the show completely because of how terrible it was. It was almost as bad as the first episode. The idea of muting the show so that I don't have to listen to it and can still possibly help out the block does sound like a nice idea that I may consider if they do move the show around again. Personally, I'm just hoping that all of the other shows will outperform it so that it doesn't happen. In my opinion, GXP has been the worst show that they've picked up and it doesn't even fit with the block that well at all, so putting it in a later slot works fine with me.

Actually it only did bad one week and that was thanksgiving at 669k (Average 840k) which was about 223k lost from the week prior and a 400k loss between it and Bleach. Now even I can understand with that kind of a loss between shows that anyone would go "It's not doing well" but when you look at the next week, it did 632k which was less then before but only 70k below the normal average of 700k for the 1am slot. Looking at it from that view, it actually didn't do nearly as bad as you think. Slightly lower than norm consider it was Naruto's first ep but still within acceptable losses IMO.

Personally the move won't help it at all as it'll lose 125-175k viewer due to the average drop and they'll never reconsider (which even with this nice week.)

Tenchi works on Toonami IMO. I call it a decent change of pace from the other action cartoons even if it does make absolutely no sense sometimes. That's the whole point though, random harem comedy. It clears the air of what I call the "fart" syndrome (see AZ Rant: The Big 3 (Naruto/Bleach/One Piece) - YouTube for more on that.) It's just sad that they wouldn't consider waiting until the end of December before considering the change. Understandable but foolish IMO.

I thought that the last week's rating for the show was still pretty bad. Maybe a bit better than the previous week, but considering that most of the other shows in the next few slots did better, even Eureka Seven if I recall correctly, it was still most likely bad enough for them to consider moving it. It probably won't get better ratings in the 3AM slot, but other shows like Thundercats and Samurai 7 might be able to get more of a boost. Plus, after the Bleach and Naruto hour, it makes a lot more sense to keep the action momentum going with something that has been able to do pretty well for itself and has some decent action.

Another Tenchi series would probably fit fine on the block, although I'm not that familiar with Tenchi series in general, but I don't think that GXP does at all. I'm not against a show that isn't an action series airing on the block since that can bring in some diversity to the lineup. The problem is that GXP doesn't really work for me as a harem comedy. The characters aren't interesting, many of them come off as annoying, Senia himself is so bland that I can't see why a bunch of girls would be into him, which probably isn't a good thing for a harem series, the comedy isn't funny in the slightest and for five episodes into a twenty-six series, it doesn't feel like much has been accomplished other than the initial premise. If the comedy worked for me, the characters were more interesting/likable and/or something interesting was happening, then maybe I would enjoy it or at least be willing to see the whole series. I usually try to finish every series I start if at all possible, so it usually takes a lot for me to stop watching a show, especially this early. As it is, I just think it was a terrible decision to get GXP and I would have much rather see them a different series. There must be plenty of cheap shows from Funimation they could have gotten besides this one.

They probably thought that being a Tenchi Muyo series would attract a lot of attention, especially when this didn't air on the original Toonami, but it doesn't involve much of the characters from the series that nostalgic fans would probably like to see and its own flaws are probably turning off people who aren't familiar with Tenchi Muyo from watching it, so I don't think it works on either level if that was reasoning behind getting this show.

https://twitter.com/Clarknova1/status/264938565933346816 - That was the response that I got when I ask Jason DeMarco. Nostalgia I guess? Though i'd call it more they just liked Tenchi a lot and apparently everyone else doesn't.

I always though the pull of the Tenchi series (regardless of which canon universe) was about the random comedy. Unusual suitations for a guy, who is just plain "plain."

Either way, didn't stop the big wigs from freaking out over one bad week and one sub-par week. If i've learned anything, action with CN was always about money not ratings. I'm just surprised they even consider letting SymBionic Titan and Thundercats on it in the first place given both were canned due to marketing.

Actually, the real reason Bleach is in re-runs is because they caught up to where VIZ dubbed, and they are waiting for more episodes to be delivered. This is what the Toonami crew has stated many times on Tumblr.

We don't know that because GXP is built around Seina & not Tenchi. It involves chars that were not part of the other TM series that preceded this. It's like airing Clev based on nostalgia for FG 10 yrs from now. Ep 16 & 17 feature Seina returning home & that's when the original TM chars appear. In GXP, Seina is either a neighbor or cousin of Tenchi. In Geminar, Kenshi is a half-brother so there are at least some flashbacks involving his upbringing around the original Tenchi chars. I agree with some of you who argue the best way to make a play on the nostalgia is to air the OVAs that feature those chars. But seeing that both these series are built on entirely new chars that wasn't going to gain them much.

First problem with GXP is that its not really funny; it tries but its humor but most of it falls flat. Second, Seina is not simply plain, he comes off as annoying; It's made worst by the fact that Seina seems to achieve without any effort of his own; for someone who is supposed to be plagued with bad luck he seems to have everything just handed to him. He doesn't even seem to have anykind of adequate motivation. He's not even attractive (made worst that he looks like a child in a harem made of grown women); all in all you are left asking why these girls are just falling all over him. Heck in any other world, some might think of his bad luck as a turn off where as everyone seems to love his bad luck. He's got nothing going for him, but with no effort on his own he succeeds

See with Tenchi you could get why girls would like him. He was kinda plain, but it worked as he acted as a straight man who played off of the more unusual personalities of the girls. He was a fairly attractive enough guy with no glaring flaws who was strong and kind hearted and his interaction with the girls expressed that; maybe being in love with him is a tad much, but you can see why they would like him. Heck the original OVA's were very character driven and payed a good deal of attention to the girls themselves helping you better understand them. If you broke each girl down, you can find a reason why they came to like tenchi... I'd also say about the same of Kenshi in War on Geminar

Tenchi Muyo, universe and War on Geminar feel like they would have been a better fit for toonami, and I'm there are better harem series; series with better characters and that are side splitting hilarious

Ah I see, I was not aware that Bleach was behind on its dubbing
Yeesh, its like dealing with filler probelms all over again, except instead of the series going into filler because it caught up with the manga, its going into reruns because it caught up with the dubbers

I don't know about that, i mean while GXP may not star the same old characters, it is atleast a sort of loose continuation of their story and even expands upon the series... granted I feel like much of what it adds really just makes things more convoluted, but it tries... frankly if GXP was a better quality series, it would have done well to cash in on nostalgia

But as for War on Geminar; that series's connection to the actual tenchi series is so weak, i've actually become convinced that that the creator just got an idea for an original series and then decided to shoe-horn it into the tenchi canon by making the main character related to tenchi

The whole liking the idea of having a Tenchi series on Toonami does kind of give off a nostalgia vibe. I don't know if saying that everyone else doesn't like Tenchi as much as the people involved with the block is that accurate. This focuses on what I think is a side character from the Tenchi Muyo series, rather than any of the main characters that were focused on in the shows that aired on the original Toonami and would appeal more to the nostalgic crowd. While I understand why they like the idea of getting a Tenchi series on the block, going for one that doesn't involve any of the original main characters, outside of an episode or two, and focusing on new characters wasn't a good idea in my opinion.

Like I mentioned before, I'm not familiar with the Tenchi series and I actually didn't see a full episode of any series until GXP, but if GXP is any indication, then the random comedy and plain/bland male lead would be boring for me in any Tenchi series. Although, I have heard better things about most of the other Tenchi series, so it's probably not fair to judge all of the other series through this OVA series.

Besides that, Senia really does come off as plain and annoying to me as well. He doesn't have an interesting personality or any meaningful/touching interactions with the female characters that could explain why they really like him. They just fall for him right off the bat just because, which doesn't make any of the characters interesting or funny. If any of them were interesting, then maybe it would work better for me, but as it is, they're just so dull and I can't imagine why they'd like a person like Senia.

I think that getting money from their own action series is a different situation than from the anime series they air. They most likely got Sym-Bionic Titan and Thundercats on the block because they don't have to pay for them, or at least I don't think that they do, they needed more shows for when the block expanded and both series have a significant fan base among the target audience for Toonami.

That's my understanding. They paid for their production so they own them. It's much like the AnimDom shows for FOX. They can air the ep they paid for indefinitely if they wanted to. They make a % off of the shows sold in syndication. Beyond that, I think S-B T was something of homage to Gendy who's Transylvania has now done over $300m WW. TCats might have been chosen on the odd chance it's ratings would surprise enough to greenlight a final & concluding season to the Mumra story.

So far Amane is no Ryoko Hakubi. The Goddess/Synthoid/Ghost was such an original char that she was easily beloved by CN fans back then. The somewhat less popular Ayeka Jurai was nearly the exact opposite of Ryoko & GXP. The contrast between the two created some fierce & exciting confrontations. That's barely visible so far between Amane & Kiriko & that's part of GXP's downfall. I do get the alure of Seina though. While they call it his bad luck it's really more of a hex power patterned off Marvel's Scartlet Witch. It turns probabilities on their head. If something has a 99% chance of occuring & 1% chance of doing something else, that something else will happen when Seina exercises his power. But unlike the Scarlet Witch, Seina is rather stupid & has no control over his power. He's not even aware of it which is hard to believe seeing that he's old enough to join the GXP. Maybe his awareness grows as the series rolls on.

It's been stated several times now on the Toonami Tumblr that Bleach has gone into reruns because [adult swim] has aired all the episodes Viz has given to them and have to wait a few weeks until they recieve another batch. This hiatus isn't even very long; we will be back to new episodes after only five more weeks. I'm certain that they want to avoid reruns of premiering shows whenever possible.

True but it's still a "Tenchi" anime so there is the idea that the trends will continue from the original and stick with the second. Which is why they went with GXP in the first place IMO. A combination on nostalgia and it being on Toonami previously.

I wouldn't say Senia comes off as annoying, more overly confident to the point of being cocky. His life on earth sucked and he took the chance to get a new life with the GXP not realizing that his bad luck would follow or that any of the girls would take a liking to him. When he realized his one love was within the GXP that's when the thing turned south because Amane was more forceful like Ryoko in her interest and personality and Kiriko wasn't wanting him to get involved with the GXP to protect him from it and Amane like Ayeka was to Tenchi (though she hasn't admitted to loving him just yet, though the implication is there.) This ties into what RabidInuyashaFan was saying about the character too just to keep things brief.

The ratings kind of proved that but Thanksgiving turned it sour and pretty much ruined any chance of that happening despite it recovering relatively quickly (Just to keep this on topic.)

Overall, any Tenchi would work on Toonami if people weren't in a constant crash over getting their action fix for the week. This is why I was against Naruto coming to Toonami as it was more of the same than anything new or cool. However I accept that it will get ratings which is what Toonami needs.

That I'll agree with, though (if i'm not the first to say this) it won't help get them a second season. CN wanted those two shows to be more Toyetic than ratings boosts since they wanted it to be like Ben10 and GenRex as stated in the Genndy T. interview on Wired. He refused (which thank you Genndy) and when the toys deals fell through (which if i'm not mistaken was a combination of Mattel not wanting do them due to Secret Saturdays toyline bombing and others not wanting to make a action fig of Ilana) they just killed it to save costs. The ratings were good though if I remember correctly and Toonami will help bolster the fan base but I'm not holding out on CN reconsidering the new season simply because of Toonami's help.

Seina's motivation to join the gxp makes no sense. Heck one of his most noticable motivations is wanting to be with kiriko, and yet he wants to take up a career that would keep him light years away from her? How convenient that she turned out to really be an alien thus allowing him to have his cake and eat it too (i have always been annoyed by these kinds of coincidences). And why a space cop of all things; even if we were to except that his motivation is that his life sucks, there are other ways for him to make it more interesting now that he's got access to space, like becoming a trader or an explorer; why does this accident prone kid want to take up the dangerous job of space cop? You'd think his constant pain from his bad luck would make a dangerous line of work something of a turn off. And none of this really explains why these women are so interested in seina. It seems like everything occurs just because the plot demands it.

Overall, any Tenchi would work on Toonami if people weren't in a constant crash over getting their action fix for the week.
Its not rally just the need for action as I think fans would enjoy a GOOD comedy. I mean one series that fans have been wanting to see is Panty and Stocking. Heck FLCL did have some action, but that series was popular because of its comedy, not its action. Thing is, GXP really falls flat on most of its jokes

As for Naruto, i agree it feels too much more of the same when i'd like to see them continue with more original programming, but toonami does need the ratings; better ratings means more shows.

There's no doubt there. Action series on CN are mostly about securing licensing revenue from toys & such. S-B T never did that which is why it was cut to 20 ep. I don't see TOONAMI being able to revive it either. TCats is a different story as it did generate licensing revenue. I can see Turner reviving it as Disney takes Clone Wars to DXD.

That doesn't really make much sense to me. It is a Tenchi series, but really only by name. It doesn't involve any of the characters that fans of the original Toonami run would remember and care about. Hoping that it will catch more attention a second time around when none of the previous main characters have a prominent role in the series doesn't quite make sense to me. I understand that they wanted a new Tenchi series to have something both new and nostalgic, but I don't think that GXP was the right choice for that.

Senia doesn't really come off as overly confident to the point of being cocky to me. He just seems like the typical generally nice guy who gets involved in wacky situations due to his bad luck power. He had a pretty lousy life on Earth, but he was forced to sign up for the GXP initially by his family and didn't decide until after his bad luck powers somehow allowed them to capture a lot of pirates. Considering how inactive he was in getting those pirates, it does feel like he was rewarded for doing little to nothing and it doesn't make sense that he would want to join the GXP when he's fully aware that his powers rub off on people and machine. All that makes me think is how he's putting himself and others in potentially dangerous situations and the GXP isn't really a well run organization if they let someone like him in.

I don't think that people being in a constant need to get their action fix for the week is accurate. The problem with GXP isn't that it isn't an action series and there are plenty of other action focused series on the block is. The problem is that GXP has terrible comedy, boring characters and a dull storyline. I'm all in favor of something other than an action series for the block, but GXP doesn't really provide anything worthwhile in my opinion.

It wouldn't be just the marketing issue, but just the fact that Toonami doesn't have the kind of money to make new episodes themselves and Cartoon Network clearly isn't interested in either series. Thundercat probably has a bit of a better chance to get more episodes, if only for being an established franchise, but it's highly unlikely that either series will get new episodes. That's too bad, but despite how they got cancelled, I'm not particularly upset about it.

Which is surprising to see that so many people don't like it when by overall averages Tenchi GXP did just fine during the it's current course.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0As2n841m5KUUdGVVYS15dHlkai1Md3JGeDFaY1o3Qnc#gid=0

I got curious about it and ended up making a spreadsheet that includes the entirety of Toonami ratings from day one back in May. Most of the numbers come ToonamiFaithful.com so they be off by 1k either way. When you look at Tenchi it did well considering. 800k+ it's first two week and within the normal average. If it wasn't for thanksgiving it probably would have easily held 800K+ until the next week (Dec 1st) and that would have been it's only true bad week at 630k or about 70k below the normal average, but even then it may have done better considering what happen this week. Guess we'll never know. I just tend to use the phase "Missing the forest for the trees" anymore. Oh well, it'll be interesting to see what this week brings with what i'm calling either "Relocated" or "Ratings Scare." Anyone else can come up with one if they like.

Maybe it appeals more to some other people initially or, more likely, they were drawn into it just for being a Tenchi series and expecting Tenchi and the original characters to play more of a role than they actually do and didn't get into it after they were focused on different characters for this series during that down time. I still don't think it offers much of anything, so even if it was a result of just a ratings scare from a couple of weeks, I'm perfectly happy with GXP being moved to a later time. At least Samurai 7 gets a better timeslot as a result and I can sleep through GXP, so it works for me.

Again, going by dvd sales in Japan GXP gets better as it rolls on. I'm hoping that's the case & even you become convinced of that. Where it's at now, the goal is to either beat it's lead or suffer less than a 15% drop. I think DeMarco will be happy with either outcome.

I'm not watching GXP anymore. I wouldn't watch another episode if I was paid and I don't even care what kind of ratings it gets anymore. As long as the shows that I actually like, or at least can tolerate in the case of Eureka Seven, are on earlier on the block and I just go to sleep by the time GXP airs, then I'll be happy. Besides that, just because the DVD sales got better doesn't necessarily mean that the series gets better. Terrible series can have good sales, despite their overall quality.
