Toonami Ratings

It's pretty amazing how the 7 lowest rated shows on Adult Swim for the week were all non-Toonami shows. I don't believe this has happened before as the last few Toonami shows (Bebop, Inuyasha, etc) have always been at the very bottom of those ratings lists over the months.

There was a Children's Hospital marathon once that failed and ranked below, but other than that, this is the first time I think, which is great! Well, actually, I think Venture Brothers also ranked below them last week.

Son of the Bronx: Adult Swim ratings (July 30-August 5, 2012) You're right. Nothing beats the ineptitude of the Children's Hospital marathon. The nightly low was 269k & a high of 915k. But that high was short-lived as CH fell to 729k at 9:15p & only rose to 745k for the rest of the night. Still, CH didn't have the benefit of a FG lead like Eric Andre did.

I think Toonami should expand to that 11pm hour man. It just feels sooo riiiggghhtt, ya know? I mean, aren't the shows that air on the current 11pm hour being beat out in ratings by both Naruto and Bleach? I mean I love Boondocks and Black Dynamite, but Toonami would make much more use of that hour.
But all this talk of One Piece airing, has there been something said or is it just a hope? Because wouldn't that be extremely expensive? But if they get it then I'll watch it because I've only seen the first dubs *shivers*, and watched the Marineford Arc.

One Piece airing is just a hope right now. If they could get One Piece on the block, I think it would be huge news. It probably would be pretty expensive and honestly, while I like the idea of One Piece airing, I'd prefer it if they waited until they got the 11PM hour at least. There are already two other long-running Shonen Jump series on the block and having three slots taken up for years probably wouldn't be the best idea right now. It would be pretty cool to see One Piece airing on Toonami though.

I will say that while that while 11 PM and One Piece would be fine additions I'm more interested in new stuff that we haven't seen before.

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing them get other anime series that aren't as popular as One Piece and haven't aired much on TV. It would help to give them more exposure and potentially boost DVD sales.

Well it looks like Funimation has started releasing subbed episodes of Michiko to Hachin on Hulu so hopefully they are getting closer to releasing a dub because that would be awesome for Toonami. If anyone hasn't seen yet the first 6 episodes are out.

Say Toonami 'does' manage One Piece, which episode do you start at? Do you continue where it left off or for new fans, start from the very beginning? FUNimation has more than 205 episodes dubbed, so you're looking at over 3 years to catch up where it left off should you go back to the beginning, not to say it doesn't get doubled up either.

Fairy Tail now, to me has enough episodes to go on where they can easily catch up to where FUNi takes it's break, so there's no need to double it up.


In Fairy Tail's case, like Bleach, you can give it a break for a couple months so that more dubs can be produced. As for One Piece, start from the start, and there shouldn't be any breaks needed for a few years

I agree with that, but even you have to agree that One Piece is a strange animal. It's a stark contrast from shows like Bleach & Naruto & that presents a risk. Clearly there are enough Bleach fans liking Naruto & that combination has led to more viewers overall watching the rest of the block. Will enough Naruto fans like One Piece? Maybe not. At least not right away. It makes more sense to feature something tried & true that will include basic cable premieres like InuYasha Final Act. IY, OP, & Fairy Tale all have a medieval feel to them & IY is a proven ratings winner on the block. It makes sense to use it's conclusion to build a following for the other shows. Assuming an IY:FA run would start at ep 148 (the series recap), it will take about 5 mo's to get to the FA premieres. That puts it smack in line with the debut of FOX adhd & an expansion of TOONAMI to 11p. Sometime in 2014, then IY would be replaced with One Piece.

The next slot currently filled with Samurai 7 has a similar progression. Replace Samurai 7 with Basilisk & something short so sometime in 2014, that slot is replaced by Fairy Tale. That cements the first 2 hrs of TOONAMI then until Bleach ends & Naruto Shippuden becomes the new lead for the block. The tail end of TOONAMI becomes cemented with old Bleach, Naruto & IY every week.

One Piece not likely for TOONAMI

I think NickToons is likely to pursue One Piece & because of the size of their investment in Dragonball with two series & movies, they are likely to land it. It makes sense from the standpoint of using Spongebob as both a lead & anchor & they have plenty of space to air the movies in. They are probably looking for another staple with DBZ Kai having been overplayed & GT doing what you'd expect. They are probably also seeking the Majin Buu arc of the original DBZ as well since the char does appear in GT.

That leaves Fairy Tail then for TOONAMI.

I wouldn't say that it's a stark contrast, except from perhaps hardcore anime groups, and by that I mean people who aren't willing too watch many dubs anyways. While both Final Act and One Piece would be great for Toonami, I really don't think One Piece would need to have Final Act to build a following, and I honestly don't think it works that way. I think what aired before it isn't do relevant, and One Piece would probably build up a strong amount of viewers itself. One Piece is also a much bigger franchise than InuYasha is, so I'm pretty sure getting One Piece would be bigger for them. It would have the same hype as Naruto with finally airing uncut, though in this case, that hype woul probably be bigger, because One Piece was much heavier edited, though Naruto likely has a stronger fanbase in America. Being on Adult Swim now, the average viewer of Toonami is older and most likely to be aware that the previously aired One Piece was as heavily edited as it is.

I fail to see how this makes sense. Their size of investment from Dragon Ball has nothing to do with One Piece. I really don't think Spongebob and One Piece have that similar a fanbase either. Nick recently got Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters right, so there's another big name for them there, and I can't see them wanting to have that many anime to be honest. Seeing as how Toonami is a block made up of mostly anime, and that the people working for Toonami, especially Jason, all love One Piece, I'd say that even though it being out of price range for now, it's definitely more likely to fall in the hands of Toonami than on Nicktoons.

While I could see One Piece fitting on Nicktoons with some edits here and there, I don't know if they would be interested in getting it. They seem more willing to air anime that have been pretty popular like DBZ in the form of DBZ Kai and recently picking up Yu-Gi-Oh! DM. One Piece was never much of a hit in the U.S. and certainly not anywhere as huge as it has been in Japan. I can't really see them getting a lot more anime titles either. It is far outside of their price range right now, but since the Toonmai staff seems to like One Piece and the two shows with the highest ratings on the block are SJ titles, I think it's entirely possible for them to get One Piece down the line and more likely to happen than Nicktoons picking up the series.

I wouldn't want 3.5-4 out of 5-6 hours to be cemented, especially if it's all the same type of show.

I will try to be kind in my response. 1) the Naruto license for TOONAMI is open-ended which means neither side has made a long term commitment. VIZ is as free to pull Naruto as TOONAMI is to take it off. VIZ would not have done that if that didn't have other networks in mind. At the time their original deals were struck, NickToons had interest in Naruto Shippuden as well but DXD outbid them. So clearly the interest is there from NickToons & yes the size of the deal definitely matters. Licensing both the series & movies matters a lot to the distributor.

2) Toei has the most control over One Piece & they have always steered it to kids networks. So even if DeMarco wants it, the best case he's likely to get is another open-ended license arrangment where it can be there one week & gone the next.

3) Spongebob is not only the #1 animated show in the US by a wide margin, but it's also a perennial top 25 cable show each week. Rarely does a week go by that doesn't feature more than one ep of Spongebob making that list & Spongebob premiere's have been known to crack the top 10. Toei values Sbob a lot more than Family Guy & would probably feel a sense of honor having it lead & anchor One Piece. What the shows have in common is obvious to any one who's watched them.

I really wont be convinced that Nicktoons is going for One Piece before I see them say it. Naruto is another case, because it's a bigger hit in the US. If One Piece was as big in the US and in Japan, it would be another case. Again, with Nicktoons having just gotten Yu-Gi-Oh, I think that's good enough for them for now. It was more directing it to a fitting than directing it to a kids place back then I think. Most places that has anime are kids places you know. Also, One Piece and Spongebob are so far from each other, they have close to nothing in common.
