DC Studios overlord James Gunn initially teased his Superman pseudo-sequel Man Of Tomorrow with a drawing of Superman and Lex Luthor dueling…Supes in his movie outfit and Lex sporting a brand new, very green mech-suit, with only his head peering from the yellow visor revealing his identity. Gunn posted again over the weekend and revealed that yeah, they really built that suit.
The pic above is not CGI, nor is it AI. It’s really actor Nicholas Hoult in there. They built a suit for him and that’s pretty cool, though I’d imagine it gets hot inside. The suit has a long history in comics, with Lex coming up with it pre-Crisis in 1983. The concept survived the universal reboot and he’s used it now and then ever since, whenever he wants to personally smack Superman upside the head.
Man of Tomorrow won’t be simply a Superman-Lex battle. It might start out that way, but Gunn says the Man of Steel and the Bald Broligarch will have to work together against an even bigger threat: Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger. “It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie,” Gunn has said.
Gunn still claims Man Of Tomorrow is not Superman 2, but it’s hard to take him seriously when you see the cast list that confirms everyone from Superman 1 is returning. The list includes Hoult as Lex, David Corenswet as Supes, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl. I mean, come on now. It’s Superman 2.
There are some new actors: Andre Royo, Matthew Lillard, and Sinqua Walls are playing unidentified characters (maybe Lillard is Shaggy; corporate synergy baby). Aaron Pierre will reprise his role of Green Lantern after being introduced in the HBO Max series “Lanterns” this August. And Maxima is in the movie; Adria Arjona has been announced as her.
Man Of Tomorrow will reach theaters about a year after Supergirl will: July 9, 2027.
