I remember the Gurren Lagann talkbacks from the now-defunct Ani-Monday block on Siffy. Six years after the fact, it's finally happening - GL on the Swim. And on Toonami, no less.

This will be their sixth sloppy-seconds series. We've had Samurai 7, Naruto Shippuden, Black Lagoon...even though it was on Adult Swim once before, I guess Eureka Seven would count as well...DBZ Kai will make number six...and now Gurren Lagann.

The only thing stopping me complaining about shows I've seen before on some other channel is the fact that the last time I was glad they were airing something recent for a change, it turned out to be Sword Art Online.

So Aniplex finally decided to give us a really good action anime this time. Well, it's about time!!!

I remember seeing bits and pieces of it on Syfy, so I'll definitely be tuning in.

This is probably the announced show for the new Toonami that I have been most excited about and haven't already watched (One Piece and Attack on Titan are fantastic, but they're not new to me). Most shows have been "Oh cool, great chance to check this out." This actually leaves me really stoked. I'm glad they picked it up, hope I'll enjoy it!

So Gurren Lagaan is coming! That's get news for people that have yet to experience the show. While it was a fun watch back on SyFy's Ani-Monday's, I never quite got why the anime community considers it so great/epic. *shrug* So I guess I'd caution future 1st time viewers to form their own opinions on the show, lest the fanbase overhype the show for you and you end up disappointed.

Can't really complain that much about "sloppy seconds series" now that the block is overloaded with premieres including a world premiere and a US TV premiere (though DBZ Kai is kind of a different case, given that it's likely to take up space earlier in the block where actual premieres could be).

You don't have to. The Toonami-premieres sans Bleach will get put on their On Demand service on your tv a few hours after (it's already up there for me) or are already online since they've aired elsewhere.

Ratings are down in general so who cares if they waste a time slot on a show I don't like. Its not going to do any better than what Blue Exorcist is right now.

Indeed, sir. With how my work schedule typically is, I can usually only catch an hour or so. It sucks, especially when the acquisitions are getting better and better.

On another note, it's a crime that Bleach still obtains an early slot while Gurren Lagann is slotted halfway through the block. Obviously it's cause of ratings, but that doesn't make me any less annoyed about it.

I'm actually surprised by the amount of people on TZ who haven't seen the whole show yet. This makes me even happier than Toonami is airing it!

I don't think that they'd be able to start the block that early. They're still unable to get the whole 11PM hour, despite getting Attack on Titan and having world premieres of Space Dandy again, so the chances of them getting nearly all of Saturday night doesn't seem too likely. It would be cool, but I don't think it's going to happen.

Besides that, there are other ways to watch the shows without staying up so late. If you have On Demand, the new episodes are uploaded a few hours later and I think that they might be on Adult Swim's website as well. The only shows that I think weren't available on either service were Eureka Seven and IGPX, but their other shows are available through those means. You can watching those shows for during the week instead of staying up late every Saturday if you're unable to do so or you just don't want to.

i'm curious if this gurren lagann show deserves all the hype it gets. i'm going to try and go in with an open mind but usually i'm left completely perplexed after watching critically acclaimed anime.

i haven't watched a whole lot of mecha anime so it should be interesting.

You're going to be very disappointed if you don't get the "critically acclaimed" mindset out of your head.

I don't think that I've heard of Gurren Lagann being considered critically acclaimed before. It's a popular series that seems well liked, but based on what I've heard of the series, I don't think that critically acclaimed would be a fitting term to use for that series. Still, I'm curious to check it out when I only saw bits of it before on SyFy's Ani-Monday block. It might be fun.

I think that they start airing new Beware the Batman episodes this week as well. That should be really cool.

I am looking forward to watching the new episodes of Beware the Batman and staying up to see it on the block should be fun too. I've been just watching the episodes that have already aired on Cartoon Network via On Demand since I didn't want to stay up late for episodes I've already seen. At least the new episodes will have a slightly better timeslot and the series will hopefully keep doing well in ratings. After the way Cartoon Network treated it, the show deserves getting a better show on Toonami and I'm still hoping that it could lead to more DC shows/movies.

I'll keep watching Black Lagoon just because I've already watched so much of it and I do have that tendency to finish shows I've started, even if I don't like them. I'm not sure if I'll stay up that late for it though. If I liked the show, I probably wouldn't have much of a problem staying up that late for it, but since I don't, I'm leading towards either watching it On Demand or on Adult Swim's website instead of staying up until 3:30AM for an overrated show.

Well that's not surprising. The series does sound like it would have fit on Toonami years ago. All I remember of SyFy's Ani-Monday block was that it aired Gurren Lagann, although I think that I speed parts of the episodes up for more commercials, and that it aired the terrible Rave Master dub. I remember having a fun time laughing at its terrible dub though, but it wasn't too memorable to me beyond that.
