It got good ratings on SyFy, though, right? I remember at the time AniMonday was doing better in the ratings than ASA was.

Gurren's a good fit for Toonami and obviously some new viewers will see it, but let's not pretend it wasn't already a hit.

I remember this too. Gurren Lagann actually beat all of ASA in the ratings department when it premiered. However, it was the high water mark for Ani-Monday. Gundam 00 didn't do as well and Monster struggled, which wound up sinking the block permanently.

I was thinking that since these episodes of Beware the Batman are new to the US, the guides (at least with how I see it for DISH) would say "new", but not the case, just shows tonight's episode "Attraction" from 2013.

Had to pause a moment too, cause it shows Batman Beyond at 2:30, so I was thinking "wait, that's not right", but then saw it ends at 2:35, then recalled hearing about the shorts, which explains why I see it that way.

Spotted on the Toonami tumblr, the history of that "cuz anime is the s uck" thing from way back on AS.

This is a shirt being worn by one of our editors at Adult Swim, Phil. It was created about a decade ago for Adult Swim employees only. It has been misconstrued as being “anti anime,” by some people. Here’s the story: back in the early days of AdultSwim.com’s message boards, there was a vocal minority of posters who passionately hated Adult Swim’s action block, which consisted of several anime shows (some of which were initially slated for Toonami). Our bump writers pulled the phrase “cuz anime is the s uck” from a poster complaining about anime on Adult Swim and ran it as a bump. We chose to make it a t-shirt as a comment on the illiteracy of L33T speak, and internet trolling in general. We wore the shirts as a badge of honor- WE LOVE ANIME, and always will. Adult Swim has been on the air since 2001, and we’ve had a commitment to anime that entire time. We still do. Cus anime is the s uck.

We could use more good action / stuff that would be realistic for Toonami out of Japan ATM. But hey, we do have JoJos.

Incidentally, AS has been running anime without interruption for longer than anything else that broadcasts to the U.S. now. Would hope that'd tip just about everybody off about their attitude at this point.

There's some new stuff that looks promising but we won't get them until 2015 at the earliest. Aldnoah.ZERO, Tokyo ESP, Tokyo Ghoul, and the upcoming Fate stay/night redo all look pretty good.

Plus Noragami, while a 12-episode anime, is perhaps the most Toonami-ish anime released in the last two years. Lots of style and action married to a cool soundtrack and a fairly unique story. FUNimation has it and I hope FUNi and Adult Swim work things out to give that show a run.

We don't even know who paid to dub episodes 1-3 of Stardust Crusaders let alone who owns the rights at the moment. If its Viz then they've had at least two con appearances since then to address this and thus far have only talked about their manga reissue. If its Warner Japan as an experiment then there's really no conversation to have at all at the moment. If its Crunchy THEMSELVES (hey they've got money), then there might be exclusivity deal ala Knights of Sidonia that'll probably kill the idea all together.

Either way its annoying because the first 25 episodes are still sub only and I demand my Troy Baker as Young Joseph vs. Crispin Freeman as Kars already.

Yeah, I get the feeling that was a pilot dub shown AX weekend. I wouldn't say we're likely to see it "soon", I think it's a matter of time with JoJos - probably. Too good & awesome and long to not bring over. That dub was pretty rad, so whenever it's picked up I hope they can get those people back.

Troy Baker would actually be a pretty great choice for young Joseph .

Crispin Freeman would probably do a good Kars, though I've honestly always had him as being a Jojo in my head... and I also remember my fantasy anime dub cast for Battle Tendency having Patrick Seitz as Kars because I had Liam O'Brien as Dio cemented in my mind .

Kill La Kill and Jojo would be great additions to Toonami, and the new Fate/Stay Night anime eventually making it in would be even better. Though hopefully Fate/Zero airs before the former potentially does .

Off the top of my head, some anime's that could realistically air and work on Toonami and would relatively not get much complaints would be Tiger and Bunny and Psycho-Pass maybe even Steins;Gate. There are some other shows Funimation and Aniplex have licensed that I think would be good fits, such as Tokyo Ravens and Blast of Tempest, but that would require them getting dubs.

No one of any adult intelligence ever took that seriously. The problem was, many of the people who did take it seriously were precisely the people AS was counting on to watch anime - anime fans with already serious inferiority complexes. So while it may have been meant "all in good fun", it was also meant for people who have no sense of humor. And of course when they overreacted, AS kept poking them again and again. It's no coincidence that it was right around this time that anime ratings started to decline on AS, and not long after it's popularity in the US in general as well. By the time AS was through having their fun the damage was done.

I think I need to see proof of that. I don't remember ANY SyFy anime shows showing up in any ratings reports, let alone beating Adult Swim shows. The only thing I recall about their ratings was that someone said at some Con panel that Gurren was the best rated show that they had aired, but not what the actual ratings were. I think a lot of people were just making assumptions back in those days because of frustration with ASA and the anime they were showing back then.

Keep in mind that Ani-Monday was essentially a 2-hour glorified infomercial block bought and paid for by Starz/Manga, for the purpose of promoting their releases. Gurren was one of the few non-Starz shows to air, and even then it's not like SyFy ever promoted it. They had a few random general Ani-Monday promos, but nothing for specific shows.

The problem with Fate/ZERO is that uncut the episodes can run 25-26 minutes in length. Even with the OP/ED and previews removed completely that's still too long for Adult Swim. They can't cut anything more out of Shippuden and Bleach to make up for lost time either, both shows are down to the bare minimum in length as it is at less than 20 minutes apiece.

So they can't run Fate/ZERO without another show paying a really steep price in runtime, or without doing timecuts to Fate/ZERO, which is something Aniplex and AS won't want to do.
