Toonami Ratings

I don't know why they thought GXP was a good idea in the first place. Maybe they got it because it to try and create a link to the old toonami, but if the ratings this week are any indication, then that idea isn't working too well. Maybe some of the dropoff was from the holidays, but Bleach only lost about 130,000, and the drop between Bleach and GXP is by far the biggest i've ever seen between the first two shows on the block. Travelling doesn't even account for a drop that big. If it continues getting ratings like this, I hope to god they switch it with Samurai 7.

Neither did the Lucky 7's (S7 & E7) and their ratings have proven that. I doubt very much DeMarco is making these decisions on his own. Funimation is certainly involved in this & they share as much blame in the choices as DeMarco does. I imagine VIZ was laughing behind Funi's back & now they've upped the ante with uncut Naruto following Bleach. It's just a matter of time before we see uncut DBZ in the lineup.

While Eureka Seven doesn't perform that well, Samurai 7 was doing pretty well before the schedule change. If ratings for GXP don't work out at 1AM, they should switch it with Samurai 7.

I don't see how FUNimation deserves the blame for Toonami picking up GXP. All FUNimation does is provide a list of shows they have and Adult Swim chooses which one to license.

I think that Viz might have made a deal with Adult Swim for Naruto, to make up for them falling behind on Bleach's dub. Judging from how sudden this pick up was, I doubt that Toonami planned to pick up Naruto. Because of their budget issues, I doubt we'll be seeing uncut Dragon Ball Z on the line up anytime soon.

Uhm, no FUNimation has clearly stated before at conventions that they don't really have a say in which of their shows Toonami airs. The Toonami staff handpicks from their list of shows all on their own. If FUNimation really had more authority on which show airs, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt would have joined the lineup by now. FUNimation even tried having the fans send in requests to Toonami to air said show.

DeMarco has also stated before that it's really his and his crew's personal taste that largely determines what shows are picked. A prime example of this is their choice in airing Samurai 7, which was a show that Adult Swim previously attempted bidding on in the past.

Boon lost 24% from Clev, Bleach lost 26% from Boon, GXP lost 38% from Bleach, S7 lost 16% from GXP, TCats gained 20% over S7, & S-BT lost 9% from TCats. E7 lost 24% from S-BT & this one seems to have hurt the most because those viewers appear to have gone to WWE AM Raw on USA. Sunday Cable Ratings: ‘The Walking Dead’ Dominates Night, ‘Soul Train Awards’, ‘Liz & Dick’, ‘Dexter’, ‘Homeland’, ‘Boardwalk Empire’ & More - Ratings | TVbytheNumbers WWE AM Raw (USA) 2am 916k 0.31 a18-49. That has to be one of the best rated ep of this for the year & S-BT did not take the brunt of that. It drew some from Baggage on GSN as well. GSN 11:3p Harvey FF 341, Newlywed 295+270, Baggage 277*2, 2a Baggage 196+163. 3a DogEatDog 141. If there was anything strange like a signal outage, ESPN ratings would indicate it. Unfortunately they aren't available at sotb right now. Again, the only conclusion that one should draw from this is that it's foolish of TOONAMI to air routine programming over a holiday weekend. Even the CW was smart enough to give Arrow & Supernatural a break that week. TOONAMI would've been better served by movies.

Considering that they may not have much else to work with in terms of programming at the moment, I don't think it's really foolish of them to air their usual schedule over a holiday weekend. They may want to air movies in the future, but there's probably nothing really set in stone for them to air just yet. I still don't think that this being Thanksgiving weekend was that much of a factor. Bleach may have lost a bit of ratings, but it still preformed fairly normal, while almost everything else had weaker ratings.

While Eureka 7 might not be bringing in good ratings, Samurai 7 was doing pretty well until the schedule change. Like others have mentioned, DeMarco and the Toonami crew are the ones who choose which shows air on the block, so I don't see how you think that they're to blame for the schedule choices. If Funimation was involved, they most likely would be airing more of their recent shows, like Panty and Stocking as Ishtar pointed out. They offer choices for the crew to pick and DeMarco has said that they pick a show based on if they like it and if they can afford it.

While airing uncut DBZ would probably help the block's ratings, I really don't think that's going to happen anytime soon given their budget. Not to mention they had to get their bosses to agree to air Naruto, which was another big hit on the original block, so the chances of them being able to get the money it would most likely take to get uncut DBZ anytime soon looks pretty unlikely. Plus, I honestly don't like the idea of DBZ airing on the block since it already had so much exposure back in the day and is still airing on different channel in the form of DBZ Kai. It doesn't really need to be on the block. While Naruto got plenty of exposure near the end of the original Toonami, at least most of the series hasn't aired for a few years, unlike with DBZ.

Yo. Toonami needs to slap GunXSword up there. REAL TALK. GXP NEEDS TO GO! I wonder if Tenchi Muyo GXP was a test for that 2009 Tenchi series(another spin-off, but WAY better than GXP). I've been hearin some rumors...

I'd say Darker than Black too...its had some exposure on Netflix, but like Samurai 7, should definetely pull in stellar ratings! Especially its 2 part episode plot style.

Bleach may have lost a bit of ratings, but it still preformed fairly normal, while almost everything else had weaker ratings.
Wrong again. Bleach had been avg'g less than an 11% drop from Boon. That is a bit. When it drops 26% that's a major bite! That is anything but normal. Bleach is not dependant on anything else in the block so the ratings after it are irrelevant. When abnormal bites occure only on holiday weekends that is an obvious factor.

Uhm, no FUNimation has clearly stated before at conventions that they don't really have a say in which of their shows Toonami airs.
Wrong again. They said they furnish a list to TOONAMI & then TOONAMI chooses from the list. You don't understand the economics of the anime industry. Anime is more expensive to acquire now because of inflation occuring in Japan. I wouldn't be surprised if the asking price for IY:FA is more than any price [as] has paid for anime to date for that length of a series. That's part of the reason why TOONAMI is grabbing titles from the height of the industry days when inflation was less of a concern & the market was saturating. Anime was cheaper to acquire then. Uncut DBZ has nothing to do with that. FUNI paid for that long ago, & they were afforded a very favorable renewal contract at the time as well. Given that DBZ Kai is already airing on Vortexx, & NT the asking price for uncut DBZ is obviously going to be less now.

You must be joking. Samurai 7 did not pull in stellar ratings. It avg'd a drop of 21-22% from Bleach over Oct & the prior months were not any better. That was in line with GXP's drop from Bleach until Thanksgiving weekend.

The main reason why it's foolish to air routine programming over the holidays, is that the #'s have proven over the yrs that about 1/4 of the routine viewers don't show up. That means they've missed an ep in a continuing saga. That increases the odds some won't come back. That's part of the reason why the ratings lag in the 4th & 1st qtrs each year.

unlike with DBZ.
DBZ did very well on TOONAMI classic night & a similar ep had aired on DBZ Kai NT before that. It's exposure on NT helps TOONAMI. DBZ is to anime what LZ is to rock. When the Zep is playing you stop & listen.

Even with that drop, Bleach didn't do that badly, unlike most of the other shows in the lineup, which is why I don't think that this being a holiday weekend was much of a factor, if at all.

The Toonami staff still has the final say of what airs on their lineup. If Funimation had more of a say of what did air on the block, then they would have put more recent/more popular shows by now. If the price for airing uncut DBZ wasn't an issue, then they most likely would have jumped for it by now. Besides that, even if the price for the series is less now like you claim, it still might be too much given how small their budget is.

I'm aware that DBZ did well on Toonami classic night, but I still would prefer it if it wasn't on the block because of how overexposed the series is. Even with how popular DBZ, I would much rather see something new on the block, instead of seeing them rely completely on nostalgia for Toonami. At least Naruto hasn't aired for years and could lead to a brand new series if they get the rights to Shippuden, unlike with DBZ. Though, it might help that I don't particularly care for DBZ. I've watched the episodes of DBZ Kai that have aired on the CW and it's okay, but nothing that really impresses me or would make me want to see uncut DBZ on the block, especially when there are plenty of other series that could benefit more from the exposure than DBZ would.

Bleach loses 26% of it's lead & you claim the holiday didn't matter because the rest of the lineup did much worse? That makes no sense.

If you are aware of DBZ ratings than it should be obvious to you that it's risk/reward is at a level where it's cost is justified. Where I agree with you is whether that cost exceeds the value of the 1a slot. Uncut DBZ is better suited for a time when TOONAMI expands to 11p & that could come in 2013 if comedy can't compete against FOX AD HD.

That makes sense to me. Bleach was doing relatively fine, even with that drop in ratings, while everything else did much worse. If the holiday was that much of a factor, then I don't think even Bleach would have done that well. I just don't think this being Thanksgiving weekend was that much of a factor, especially when Thundercats and Sym-Bionic Titan did pretty well for their timeslots, and I don't think it's too much of a conclusion since the drop between Bleach and GXP was a huge gap that I don't think could be dismissed as simply the result of a holiday weekend.

You are in denial. A 15% worse drop from it's season avg vs it's lead is FAR from relatively fine. When that size drop carries over to the rest of the lineup (WHICH it clearly did) then it's clearly not Bleach but the night itself. The evidence is overwhelming that the holiday was a big factor in the drop & assuming the #'s rebound this weekend that will be made even clearer.

No. Ishtar is actually not wrong at all. "They said they furnish a list to TOONAMI & then TOONAMI chooses from the list." is pretty much what he/she said, except he/she didn't say furnish, but that's being too specific. It's you who said pretty much the opposite aka that FUNimation is just as much to be "blamed" for which shows air on Toonami, which they aren't, because Toonami chooses from their list themselves. Also, you can't say that he/she don't understand the economics of anime, when he didn't talk about that.

I don't mind if you disagree with me, but is it really necessary be so disrespectful by saying that I'm in denial? It's better than how most of the block did, so that still comes off as relatively fine all things considered. The huge drop between Bleach and GXP does make me doubt that the change in ratings is just because of the holiday weekend and even if the ratings do improve this week, which I do hope they do just so it helps the block out, I think it would be more of a sign that bringing in Naruto to the block would attract more people and was a good decision than that the holiday weekend being a huge factor for this week's ratings.

The huge drop between Bleach and GXP does make me doubt
Like S7, GXP was avg'g a drop of 21-22% of Bleach viewers, so when Thanksgiving weekend saw a drop of another 15% of Bleach viewers, it was expected that GXP would see that as well. It's really not that hard to understand. Those same viewers were most likely watching both shows. The fact that S-BT & TCats did much better than Samurai 7 is an endictment on S7 more so than a sign of strength on these shows. They saw a similar holiday drop from their season avg's as well.

This is not an isolated incident either. I have already shown the #'s of the past 3 holiday weekends & they all show major drops vs the monthly avg's. They just weren't as severe as Thanksgiving & that's not hard to understand if you have any family experience over the holidays.

I would appreciate it if you could be more respectful when you try to correct me. I don't mind being wrong, but I would like it if I didn't feel insulted about it. I don't care to continue this conversation if you're going to be rude. Besides that, at this point, I honestly don't care what caused the drop in ratings and just hope that the ratings will be better this week.

The other downsize in this schedule change for me is that there won't be a show I actually like airing until 1:30AM, but at least putting uncut Naruto right after Bleach makes a lot more sense than airing GXP there. I still question why they bothered to pick up that series, besides being a Tenchi series, let alone airing it after Bleach. Putting another action series at 12:30AM has a much better chance of keeping more of the audience from Bleach around than a boring comedy series does in the long run, especially when Naruto was fairly popular for the block.

I'm not familiar with the lastest Tenchi Muyo series War in Geminar but I imagine that was the driving force in the decision. I think GXP was the most recent TM series before WIG. I agree completely with you that the 2nd show in the block needs to be action intense.

Say what you will about Panty & Stocking and how they'd have to edit if but it would be doing alot more for Toonami right now than GXP, also it's just a much much much better show so far than what I've seen of GXP. GXP has made me go "why the hell was this made?" on quite a few instances so far. Not that P&S would have been as cheap to air as GXP I imagine.

That's the unknown factor in these decisions. E7 & GXP might have been freebies to build awarness for the latest series & E7 movie. Future dvd sales depend more on social media popularity now.

I don't know about GXP, but I think that they mentioned that they had to buy the rights to air Eureka 7 again on either Twitter or Tumblr. I could see them airing Eureka 7 in order to lead into the sequel series that I think Funimation has the right to though, but I'm not sure if the newest Tenchi series is the reason they chose to air GXP, especially if GXP doesn't have any significant impact in that other Tenchi series. While I personally don't want to see Panty and Stocking on the lineup, mainly because it doesn't look like my cup of tea, I can understand why others would want it on the lineup. I would imagine that Panty and Stocking is more expensive to get considering that it's a more recent series and if they could afford to get it, they probably would have picked it up by now due to how popular it is.

I'm not sure if [as] actually paid $ for anything that aired on TOONAMI classic night or if that was just part of the promotion for the return of TOONAMI in May. Either way it does demonstrate a potential for a TOONAMI showcase night where a VIZ/FUNI just air one ep of a new series to give viewers a taste. As I recall TOONAMI classic night included bumps to buy all of the series on dvd. They could do something like that for recent series that TOONAMI currently can't afford. As far as the cost to TOONAMI goes, I think once they've met expectations of profitability on dvd/merch sales for a new series/movie they have less need to ask for a high price on a tv license. So if something like Geminar sells well it might well fall w/in TOONAMI's budget then. I'm not sold on PS&G either because it's animation style is more toonish (think Dead Leaves) & TOONAMI viewers did not treat Shin-Chan kindly.

I'm not sure if they paid money for the shows airing that night or if it was a promotion for Toonami's return in May, especially when I don't know if they were seriously considering bringing the block back until the massive Twitter campaign started. I'm not sure if airing one episode of various new series to give viewers a tastes would really work on a long-term basis. It might not give them the best ratings and if it does affect their budget, then I'd rather see them use it to get a good series on the lineup, as opposed to testing the waters with a bunch of different shows. I wouldn't mind bumps to buy series on DVD. I'm slightly surprised that they didn't do that more often, especially when Deadman Wonderland was released, to boost sales. Starting that for both older shows, along with newer ones, could be a helpful way as to get more people interested in checking out series that might not be able to air on Toonami and possibly buy them.
