Toonami Ratings

I'm not sure if airing one episode of various new series to give viewers a tastes would really work on a long-term basis.
I'm thinking maybe once a year & Thanksgiving weekend might be ideal given that it's the day after Black Friday so viewers are thinking about gift giving. Since ratings are typically weak then anyways, it's better to turn the night over to the vendors. Where TOONAMI has greater value to FUNI/VIZ than ever before, is the L+7D #'s. Those give them the opportunity to push their product before 1m viewers. While the ad value for the 7D bonus doesn't amount to all that much for TOONAMI, every one of those viewers represents a potential sale for the vendors. I'm not a fan of [as] weakening April 1st with something like the Room. It's not a long weekend so TOONAMI should not sacrifice ratings for a mysterious lineup. They need to surprise on that night to the upside again like they did this year.

Naruto got 925,000 losing about 200,000 from Bleach. Will that trend keep up? Hopefully it starts beating Bleach.

GXP is a failure. It lost 293,000 from Naruto but more importantly it lost to Sym-Bionic Titan, ThunderCats and Samurai 7.

Brotherhood bounced back, E7 did reasonably for the slot and InuYasha and Cowboy Bebop did fine.

GXP is ratings poison so far. So much so that they should probably kick to after even Eureka 7 or at least after the 3 shows it lost to this week.

Here are the Toonami ratings only:

12:00 AM - Bleach - 1,130,000 viewers
12:30 AM - Naruto - 925,000 viewers
1:00 AM - Tenchi Muyo! GXP - 632,000 viewers
1:30 AM - Thundercats - 706,000 viewers
2:00 AM - Samurai 7 - 703,000 viewers
2:30 AM - Sym-Bionic Titan - 706,000 viewers
3:00 AM - Eureka Seven - 613,000 viewers
3:30 AM - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - 525,000 viewers
4:00 AM - Cowboy Bebop - 544,000 viewers
4:30 AM - Cowboy Bebop - 517,000 viewers
5:00 AM - InuYasha - 559,000 viewers
5:30 AM - InuYasha - 495,000 viewers

Oh, GXP, you ratings killer, you!

Anyway, I give Naruto a few weeks to crack a million. If it doesn't, I'll eat my hat.

The last week Samurai 7 was at 12:30a it did 908 when Bleach did 1110. If Naruto's costing them more than S7 it's hard to say it met expectations especially if S7 is pulling a higher % of adults. GXP definitely needs to move down. Branching out into harem rom/com's, & furries is not taboo but FORGETTING about "action" definitely is. I can't believe how actionless this series is. What were the producers thinking & what was DeMarco thinking? Again, I think it's more about War in Geminar. That spin-off chronologically takes place 15 yrs after the events of GXP so the two series are related. It's interesting to note that the US$ has gained over 25% on the yen between the productions of those two series. A stronger $ vs yen means a higher cost to American licensers.

If I'm right then these deals are starting to make sense. For the same $ spent on the 36 ep or so of Deadman Wonderland + Sins, DeMarco got S7+E7, & what is probably GXP+Geminar. It's along the lines of buy 1, get 2 free in terms of ep length.

Airing/watching GXP first is completely unnecessary for War in Geminar. Really, the two series are so distantly related that that if "tenchi muyo" was not in the title, you probably wouldn't even realize it was a tenchi muyo series. The only way its related to main series is the main character's relation to Tenchi and he, on rare occasions, makes vague references to his family. I don't think anything from GXP in particular was even referenced. Its a good series, but it feels like the creator had an idea for a non-tenchi series, but then decided to find a way to shoe horn it into the Tenchi Muyo continuity instead of trying to start a new series/franchise.

If they were planning on airing War in Geminar, if anything, it would have probably been a good idea for Toonami to air the OVA's or Tenchi Universe if only to give Geminar a little hype... Air the best tenchi muyo has to offer to hype the next series... GXP seems like a bad idea; Its like they were trying to bank on nostalgia while also given fans something new that those same fans might be interested in seeing. That's a good idea, but just because its new in canon series doesn't mean its good. Frankly I think the OVA's or Universe would have been the way to go. It would be a serious nostalgia trip for the old fans who grew up during the golden days of toonami, but the series has also been off the air long enough that it would feel new to the many viewers who didn't see the series a decade ago.

I disagree. In the summer of 2000, CN's TOONAMI aired the first 3 Tenchi series & GXP was the next in logical succession. I think this had more to do with "new Tenchi" for TOONAMI than actual ratings expectations. I just don't see any point to airing GXP if they do not plan to air Geminar. I think OVA's are still pretty much taboo for [as]. I know they aired a Tenchi one on classic night, but that was a special event. They didn't include the OVA for Deadman Wonderland's run.

Those are pretty good ratings for most of the block. Naruto did really well, much better than GXP and Samurai 7 did in that slot, and it is a good show to put on after Bleach to keep more viewers afterwards. I'm kind of surprised that a rerun of Bleach did that well. GXP did pretty bad, which I'm not surprised at this point. Not only was there a significant drop in ratings from what Naruto had, but it picked up afterwards so that Thundercats, Samurai 7 and Sym-Bionic Titan did better than GXP. I don't mind the idea of Toonami venturing into something different with a harem comedy series since that can add some variety to the block, but the problem is that GXP is so boring, the characters aren't interesting and the humor just doesn't work for me. They really should move it to 2AM since it clearly isn't doing that well at all.

I'm also not sure if they're airing GXP just so that they can air this War in Geminar series. Even though I've read that it takes places fifteen years after GXP, I don't know if it's really necessary to see the events of GXP in order to understand that new series. If it doesn't matter, then they could have gone for one of the other Tenchi series that they could have afforded and if they couldn't afford another one, then I would have preferred for them to pick something else. I doubt that it would have been as bad as GXP.

I'm pretty sure [as] has aired OVAs before, in fact i think the Tenchi OVAs were on the ASA saturday lineup in '02.

Rating are pretty good. Pretty much what everyone else said, naruto should be getting at least 1 million i a couple of weeks, and gxp really needs to be moved back.

Yeah, Naruto did really well this week.
I say give it 'til maybe episode 4 or so before we start to see it crack a million.
Right around the time we see them start the Land of Waves is when it really starts getting good (in my opinion, anyway).

Also, Bleach hit a million, not bad for a rerun. ;)

Not to mention FLCL is an OVA, which has been constantly aired by AS.

I think you have to give some credit to Naruto for Bleach getting more from the encore than the premiere. The 12a hr rose 4% vs the premiere night for Bleach+Samurai 7. That matters more this year as 18-34 has declined by 9% across the board for Nov sweeps. Even if the presence of LEGO & other toy ads means that viewers are representing more 12-24 in past yrs, Turner is probably looking at that as a good thing for the future of the block.

It's hard to get a handle on whether the rising yen is increasing licensing costs or not. The USD/JPY exchange rate peaked at 114 in Dec, 2007 & has since fallen to 82. That's a 29% depreciation of the USD vs the JPY which means if sales simply kept up with 2007 at those prices, producers are still looking at 29% less jpy valued revenue. That didn't happen as we know. Sales fell off the cliff with the closing of B&K and other retail chains so the industry has probably fallen closer to 60% in jpy value revenue since. So will they raise the licensing costs to squeeze more out of a smaller cow or will they continue to maintain the structure in hopes of growing the cow?

GXP might get better. Based on 2002 sales in Japan, Vol 1 (ep1-4) was the worst seller. There was steady growth over the next 2 Vol's & Vol 4 doubled Vol 1. Vol 8 tripled Vol 1 sales in 2003. Vol 8 sold over 9K units, which is a stark contrast from Tenchi Universe failing to sell even 600 units for it's last vol. The Ryo-Ohki OVA sold more than double the Vol 8 sales for GXP. Don't be surprised if TOONAMI continues to target older titles more than recent ones.

Looks like my wish for GXP and Samurai 7 switching might just come true :).

Personally, I have my doubts about that, especially if the series doesn't drastically improve and continues with the same dull characters and humors. Besides that, even if it does pick up with its overall quality, it might be too late for the series to really pick up an audience since first impressions really count here and GXP has left a rather disappointing one to say the least. Considering their budget, I'd imagine that Toonami picking up older titles would be more likely to happen than recent ones. I wouldn't mind that since there are plenty of older shows that could use some more exposure through airing on TV. I just hope that they won't pick something like GXP again.

In my opinion moving Samurai 7 that late was stupid to begin with.

I totally agree. While Samurai 7 didn't get amazing ratings, I thought that it was going relatively fine at the 12:30AM slot and being on right after Bleach really helped it out after awhile. Since GXP has been basically turning people off if these ratings are any indications and doesn't even feel like it should be on the block, I don't quite see the point in giving it a better timeslot than Samurai 7.

I hope this is the week they make some changes to the lineup. Move everything from 1:30-3:30 to 1-3 and let Tenchi drift at 3am... Or... even though there's only about 4 episodes left anyway, let Samurai 7 finish at 1am, keep the Cats at 1:30, then move your 2:30-3:30 shows up and then put Tenchi at 3.

This is just my opinion, but given the air times to these shows, I feel to myself that InuYasha's 559K @ 5am did better than Tenchi's 632K at 1am. That's how I want to look at it anyway.

I don't think you'll get an argument there, but a weak show needs a strong lead if it's going to gain any value. I'd like to see this:
12a Bleach + Naruto, 1a TCats + S7, 2a E7 + S-BT, 3a GXP + FAB, 4a CB*2, 5a IY*2.

I think that there are ten more episodes of Samurai 7 left. I'd still prefer for them to finish off the series at 1AM instead of 2AM. GXP at either 2AM or 3AM would work fine with me since I don't think it deserves to air at 1AM.

Got ya -- I looked on zap2it for the remaining titles -- either they're added wrong or I mis-read it. Looks like they'res definitely 10 left, then I'd say 1:30, where it is now is okay with me. There's 7 "No episode title for this show"s listed in between episodes 25 & 26

Just so everyone sees it, this is the new schedule just posted

Source: On Air Schedule - Adult Swim

12:00: Bleach
12:30: Naruto -NEW
1:00: Thundercats
1:30: Samurai 7 -NEW
2:00: Sym-Bionic Titan
2:30: Eureka Seven
3:00: Tenchi Muyo GXP -NEW
3:30: FMA: Brotherhood
4:00: Cowboy Bebop
5:00: InuYasha

I would ALMOST like to say [as] saw my post... either way, it makes sense this change in the lineup. E7 had a wonderful brief 1-week stint at 3:00am. -- Now you have an hour of FUNimation dubs from 3-4am. Not that I'd want to see Tenchi even slip further, I'd like to see FMA:B's #s up more, which will probably happen.

BTW, is shows to start December 15th. Schedule is the same this week according to On Air Schedule, meaning GXP gets 1 more week at 1:00am
