Toonami Ratings

One of these days you will wake up & realize that twitter & tumblr are primarily entertainment venues and you should not treat what is said there as gospel truth. I would think the phrase "can never air the shows again!" is a clear give away for exageration. If you had simply done a search on the topic here, you would have found a thread that essentially makes this a formality more than anything else. CN studios produced the show so any future N American tv rights would require their consent. Those tv rights elapsed for CN & currently there are no N American tv rights associated with the show. CN retains the digital rights which is why the show is available on iTunes. Furthermore CN venues outside of America continue to air the show.

Still doesn't change the fact that Megas isn't going to air on Toonami in the US, so...

That depends. It's definitely a different situation. CN still holds the rights to Thundercats & S-BT so it costs TOONAMI nothing to air them. Some $ is owed to the people involved in the production of Megas XLR to get it on TOONAMI. While most of it amounts to Peter paying Paul, Paul then has to pay some to the Titmouse guys. I don't see Warner expensing that without a commitment to a video game release. If they were to do that then tv exposure makes more sense. While it's the Warner way to open that exposure to outside networks, I think they are hating on Disney right now to the tune of saying no to any of their networks. If Megas XLR were to retun to tv, it's most likely going to be on TOONAMI. But that's a very big IF dependant on a vg announcement that is not likely to happen either.

Personally I think the cult following oversells Megas. It wasn't bad but it's no Ben 10 & I would think the various Ben 10 series attract that same fan base. I would prefer Goddanar replace S-BT. It has it's share of hijinx, is over the top in fan-service, features some great anime action, is a mecha, & probably is more enjoyable than any CN substitute. That requires money as well but it's sure to be cheaper than what CN would have to pay Titmouse for Megas & if GXP is any indication it could avg well over 800k . It's definitely got a rom-com/harem angle to it as well. Goddanar is a fun thrill ride of a show.

Even though those answers are from Twitter and Tumblr, I don't think I'd discredit them for being on those sites in favor of a wiki, especially when I think that those can be edited by anyone. The people running Toonami would be more informed about this development than whoever runs the wiki. Regardless, I don't think that it's too likely for Toonami to be able to air the series. It might be a bit too expensive for their current budget and I'd honestly much rather see them use their budget money on new shows, or at least more recent shows, than picking up a show in the hopes that the nostalgic value of the show would appeal to its audience. Being TV-Y7 instead of TV-PG like Thundercats and Sym-Bionic Titan might be an issue too, but I don't know if that would be nearly as problematic as affording to get the show if that was even a possibility.

Um, yeah no offense but I freaking trust Jason DeMarco and the Toonami team. Let's not have a whole stupid argument about this. I'm starting to be reminded of certain people that I don't feel like naming here.

you're literally saying not to trust the people, if anybody, who would put the show on [as] in the first place. besides, the toonami tumblr has been honest with us, why lie to us about something like this. It makes no sense.

I've already voiced my opinion on this & I agree with you that I'd rather see something like Goddanar than Megas XLR. That being said I have to defend wiki from ignorance. It's a tightly controlled source of information. Any new entry is flagged as unverified until the editors verify the information. That doesn't just apply to a topic page but also each update to a topic page. Furthermore, any one can challenge the information even after it's verified. While a portion of information is being challenged, the editors make that notation on the page. Wiki is essentially tightly controlled collective intelligence. There is ZERO editorial control on twitter or tumblr. As I said before it does not aspire to be a reliable source of information. There is no verification process there & it seeks to entertain more than anything else. It's mostly an off the cuff emotional outlay for people.

Now look at the last 2 posts. I said exagerated & they translated that to lie. I said avoidance & again they translated that to lie. Those posts took what I said to the extreme which is usually what happens on twitter feeds. In any case I am interested in what you might turn up from searching for the supposed reason why CN/[as] is legally bound to never air Megas XLR ever again.

There is an "editorial process" for the Toonami tumblr. The process being THE WRITERS MAKE TOONAMI!

As for MEGAS, the creators have explained what happened: CN owns MEGAS and can do what they want with it BUT if they air it on TV, it would violate their tax write-off and they'd be in trouble with the IRS. So I'm not expecting MEGAS XLR on TV. Maybe, if a DVD release can be organized and it sells well, they could do new episodes or a reboot under a different title and dodge scrutiny, but they can't air the original 26 again.

I don't see why they can't just reacquire the rights to it since they were able to do so with the much less popular Eureka 7 which they weren't even involved with...

The thing is, they have the rights. But they're legally not allowed to air it unless they want to pay a whole bunch of extra taxes. Not being involved in Eureka 7 actually made it easier to air because they couldn't pull their loopy accounting practices on it.

I see... I don't really know much about these business/tax terms. I guess with Eureka 7, they just acquired it in the first place and it simply expired so it was up for grabs again.

I just spoke to Jody P. Shaeffer the co-creator because I've always wondered how much involvement Titmouse had in Megas XLR but that studio was only used to animated the opening sequence. Titmouse has no claim to Megas XLR, some of the people who worked on Megas XLR including the co-creator George Krstic have since worked on shows for Titmouse and they've used Goat in 4 shows including Megas XLR. At any rate, Jody and George would own Megas XLR if CN didn't because it wasn't a co-production between Titmouse and CN Studios as some might have assumed.

I don't think you're going to find an article about the show being used as a tax write-off from any website that doesn't refer to what Jason Demarco and George Krstic have said on twitter, tumblr and on some podcasts. Is their a more reliable source than the co-creator of the show?

BTW while they may be used for entertainment purposes, I've heard what is said on social media can be used in court. Jason got in trouble for saying what he did about Megas XLR and IGPX.

Exactly. They are much more informed about this situation than whoever runs the wiki and they have yet to give me any reason to question their information. They can't air Megas XLR and that's the simple truth. It shouldn't matter that it comes from social media sites if the person making the statement is reliable and I don't see why they would give out incorrect information over something like this.

Anyway, I wouldn't expect 2 AM premieres to be a regular thing, and I'm guessing Thundercats and Titan will stick around because they're free, proven ratings hits, and provide diversity when there's not many other options for American cartoons on Toonami, though they'll be pushed back of course. Once they're done with their first runs I could see the line-up looking something like this:

12.0: Bleach
12.5: Naruto/New New Show
1.0: Naruto/New New Show (ideally I'd move Naruto to 1 and sandwich the New New Show between the two proven hits, but they might not wish to do that)
1.5: Old New Show
2.0: Thundercats (ratings anchor)
2.5: Tenchi GXP (moved up to keep the mecha hour together; can easily be replaced by Big O or FLCL when it's done)
3.0: Eureka 7
3.5: Sym-Bionic Titan
4.0: FMA: Brotherhood
4.5: Cowboy Bebop
5.0: Inu-Yasha

Though there's always the chance of an 11 expansion if Naruto and Bleach premieres do great while Black Dynamite and Boondocks reruns faulter and then everything can move up an hour to allow for either more new stuff if they can get it or to make room for double Bebop/FMA/possibly GitS or something.

It did work for DICE way back when.

Twitter is not a credible source & I know of no court case where a judge considered such evidence permissible. Even if one were to, it's easy enough to show a jury exageration is par for the course there. If DeMarco was cautioned that has more to do with legal costs than anything else.

Assuming Warner amortized the production costs of Megas XLR on their returns, the tax liability is inconsequential to the accounting costs to revise those returns over those years. There's nothing legally preventing Warner from renewing the N American cable license but doing so requires that action. That cost will dwarf any benefit in doing so. But there is a way around & it's been done many times before.

Any new production costs assoc with Megas XLR allows Warner to bring it out of storage. A dvd/br release including extras would suffice. It's been done before many times by other studios. They usually change the name so as to avoid any confusion & then amortize the new production costs.

If Warner ever decides to go forward with a video game production, that would make it cost-effective. They would no doubt cut a new OC/EC sequence for that game & editing that into the series would enable them to establish a N Amer cable license for Megas XLR 1.5. That dvd/br release would undoubtedly feature extras including the video game production.

It's moot point for TOONAMI as someone indicated it's Y7 FV. TOONAMI has to draw a line in the sand at PG. I don't what to see anything lower than that. If Megas XLR 1.5 were to happen, I would want to see some of the video game scenes make the cut & I would want it to warrant at least a PG rating.

Bleach + Naruto needs to stay together. They create a better lead combined for the other shows. No new show is going to top that as we will see now that Zabuza is arriving close to when Bleach premiere's return.

Until DeMarco says otherwise, TCats will leave when it's run ends. When it comes to programming changes, I take him at his word since he's in control.

I see no reason to bring back Eureka 7 or GXP if there is no plan to air the next series. So I'm assuming they are in the works. I expect AO to replace E7, & Geminar to replace GXP.

I don't believe DeMarco intends to make CN series common place on TOONAMI. I think they are more likely to appear in the Fall so they stretch to the holiday shopping season. I'm still catching up on Samurai 7 from Nov, & Lego was a sponsor for the PG rated ep of that show.

The Twitters of people who run Toonami or created MEGAS seem credible to me.

Again, the people who are answering the question through Twitter, like DeMarco himself, is a credible source and I also think that the people involved with the show itself said how Cartoon Network doesn't have the rights to air it anymore. I have no idea why you're bringing up that a court case wouldn't take something on Twitter as evidence. It seems a bit of an extreme example and I don't think that it discredits this source of information. I think that you're ignoring that these are people who are involved with the show/channel and focused on the fact it is from a social media site. There is nothing to indicate that they are misinforming us with this situation.

I could see Thundercats sticking around. It will probably be put in a later timeslot, but it actually has brought in good ratings and it doesn't cost them anything. Plus, I imagine that they like to have more than anime on the block for diversity. I imagine that if he didn't know the situation about Megas XLR himself, he could easily find out by someone who does and he is involved with people working at Cartoon Network, so I don't see why we can't take his word on something like this, especially when the people who created Megas XLR also confirmed the same information about their show.

I could see them airing AO after Eureka Seven since that's a show Funimation has and Eurkea Seven is long enough to where they could air the sequel right after it. I don't think that they'll air Geminar after GXP. I don't know if it's necessary to see GXP in order to understand Geminar, although I imagine that one doesn't, but I doubt that the same can be said for AO. Plus, I think that with GXP, they just wanted a Tenchi series on the lineup to appeal to the nostalgia crowd rather than wanting to air the next Tenchi series. Personally, I really don't want to see another Tenchi series on the lineup. After GXP, I would much rather see nearly any other romantic comedy/harem series on the block than another Tenchi series. I don't know if I would even try watching another Tenchi series after what little I saw of GXP, despite the good things I've heard of a couple of them, but I'd much rather see them get better programing on the lineup than GXP.

The phrase "can never air it again" is an exageration. I've said enough on the subject as to why. It's a waste of time to explain it again.

It still makes no sense to air a 2003 series if you have no intention of airing something more recent. No one's ever claimed that GXP is required for Geminar. It's simply a matter of TOONAMI like Tenchi Muyo from it's CN days & still liking it now. The last two ep weren't bad at all & wouldn't doubt if it continues to beat E7 in the process.

There is no precedent with DeMarco running things for series getting 2nd runs. Both Bebop & Fm:B were in the midst of runs when TOONAMI took over. There is no basis for believing TCats will now. While it' tv's have been strong, it's adult viewers are suspect because it was not included in a Turner report when Naruto & S7 were.

I just don't see them putting out the money to air an old series like Megas XLR, especially when it's only TV-Y7 anyway, so from my standpoint, there's no reason to go through that process, if it's even possible, and I still take Jason's word on this situation that they can't air it anyway. I see no reason not to at this point, especially when he isn't the only one to confirm that Cartoon Network doesn't have the rights to the series anymore,

I know that no one claimed that GXP is required for Geminar and I didn't say that anyone did. All I was trying to say is that airing GXP doesn't necessarily mean that they'll definitely air Geminar right afterwards. Even with the better ratings, they might not have the budget to go after recent shows and honestly, I still would prefer seeing them get anything else than another Tenchi series. I'm aware that Toonami still likes Tenchi Muyo as that does tie in with the appeal to the nostalgia crowd I mentioned. I know that the last two episodes didn't do too bad in ratings, but the thing is that I don't care. I just want them to get something better for their next new show and hopefully have them avoid another Tenchi Muyo series. There are so many other series that they could get most likely fairly cheap from Funimation that I would rather see on the lineup. I could see it changing timeslot with Eureka Seven if it continues to do well, but I'd rather not since while I don't particularly like Eureka Seven for various reasons, at least it hasn't become completely unwatchable for me yet. Plus, I think that all of the legal means of watching the series online are gone.
