Quote: One Piece and Spongebob are so far from each other, they have close to nothing in common.
Wrong. Story-wise they have nothing in common, but character wise they have a lot in common. In fact you can easily list every char in One Piece & draw a line to a similar char in Spongebob. Char's matter a whole lot more to tweens than the story does & tweens are what Toei is looking for the most from One Piece. Toei believes that a successful run on a major kids network will generate licensing revenue for toys based on the show. It didn't work that way on CN, but CN was never structured like NickToons. They didn't air One Piece in block formats & they never considered pursuing the films. NickToons will do both.
Their decision on Yu-Gi-Oh has nothing to do with One Piece or DBZ. It has everything to do with Monsuno. It didn't do as well as expected but they still want a TCG like show & Yu-Gi-Oh is the best there is. One Piece is all about replacing the slots currently filled by the Marvel shows & some of the DB shows. DB Z/GT is not as popular as it once was on the network so they are reluctant to air in large blocks any more. They want a new show they can do that with. That has always been a tough thing to do with TCG formatted shows like YGO. YGO doesn't fit as well with TMNT, Panda, Avatar, or Korra like One Piece does.
One Piece is probably the toughest show for DeMarco to land because Toei has never expressed any interest in having it air on [as].
