Quote: One Piece and Spongebob are so far from each other, they have close to nothing in common.

Wrong. Story-wise they have nothing in common, but character wise they have a lot in common. In fact you can easily list every char in One Piece & draw a line to a similar char in Spongebob. Char's matter a whole lot more to tweens than the story does & tweens are what Toei is looking for the most from One Piece. Toei believes that a successful run on a major kids network will generate licensing revenue for toys based on the show. It didn't work that way on CN, but CN was never structured like NickToons. They didn't air One Piece in block formats & they never considered pursuing the films. NickToons will do both.

Their decision on Yu-Gi-Oh has nothing to do with One Piece or DBZ. It has everything to do with Monsuno. It didn't do as well as expected but they still want a TCG like show & Yu-Gi-Oh is the best there is. One Piece is all about replacing the slots currently filled by the Marvel shows & some of the DB shows. DB Z/GT is not as popular as it once was on the network so they are reluctant to air in large blocks any more. They want a new show they can do that with. That has always been a tough thing to do with TCG formatted shows like YGO. YGO doesn't fit as well with TMNT, Panda, Avatar, or Korra like One Piece does.

One Piece is probably the toughest show for DeMarco to land because Toei has never expressed any interest in having it air on [as].

What are the two most common elements of Spongebob & One Piece? The sea & pirates. They are obvious in both shows. When someone like yourself that clearly doesn't paint Spongebob in a favorable light can quickly rattle off a few char assoc it's obvious there are more. Spongebob has been airing in Japan since 2002 & is quite popular with women there. So obviously the way they relate to the characters is similar.

What's obvious in your responses is that you think a decision to bring One Piece to NickToons is based on how OnePiece fans take to Spongebob. That is laughable & demonstrates both extreme prejudice & ignorance of Spongebob's stature in the US. All that matters in the decision is whether NickToons thinks Spongebob fans will take a liking to One Piece. One Piece is but a grain of sand at Bikini Bottoms in terms of their stature here. Now NickToons has expressed a desire to air One Piece in the past but they couldn't meet Toei's price. Toei is stubborn in that regards. NickToons is much more profitable now so that may no longer be the case.

Pirates are barely a factor in Spongebob compared to One Piece. The context is extremely different. And other than that nothing.

Actually, I enjoy Spongebob very much.

Secondly, what you're saying is very invalid. Spongebob only pokes at the pirate aspect in a small parody fashion(with only a few episodes actually poking at it for laughs). One Piece does this concept in a variety of themes from small laughs to pure emotional tales. Spongebob's basis is not about pirates and you arguing this should be completely aware of that. Its about a silly sponge living UNDER the sea going through daily life with talking fish, crabs, and even a squirrel.

One Piece revolves around another silly character who joins up with different characters on a voyage in order to succeed with their dreams. The only actual connection One Piece holds with Spongebob is holding the character "King Neptune" .

Both series are silly, but One Piece drifts away from having any real similarities.

I have no idea what your response was trying to achieve. Saying that Spongebob has nothing in common with One Piece because they portray their pirates in a bad way, is absurd. More to the point it's irrelevant to the larger debate. So I will try to steer your focus back to what that is.

It should be fairly obvious that any decision by NickToons to meet Toei's asking price for One Piece stems on how they think their current fan base will take a liking to One Piece. So there is no misunderstanding I believe fans of Spongebob, Avatar, Korra, TMNT, & Panda will all take a liking to One Piece. Therefore it's a no-brainer so long as Toei doesn't ask any more than NickToons has just paid for original Yu-Gi-Oh or DBZ Kai. I'll even go as far to say that NickToons will accept some ep rated PG.

I'm going to assume you believe otherwise & nothing any one says will change your mind.

Saying that Spongebob has nothing in common with One Piece because they portray their pirates in a bad way,

Pretty sure I never said they were portraying their pirates "in a bad way". All I said was that Spongebob is not pirate themed and only uses anything related to pirates as a small joke.

Korra, Avatar, TMNT, and Panda fans enjoying One Piece? I can easily see that. : )

I'm going to assume you believe otherwise & nothing any one says will change your mind.

Depends. I agree with you on what type of fans will enjoy One Piece for sure! But, forming a connection with two completely different shows with their own unique context..? Nope!

I will try to be kind in my response. 1) the Naruto license for TOONAMI is open-ended which means neither side has made a long term commitment. VIZ is as free to pull Naruto as TOONAMI is to take it off. VIZ would not have done that if that didn't have other networks in mind. At the time their original deals were struck, NickToons had interest in Naruto Shippuden as well but DXD outbid them. So clearly the interest is there from NickToons & yes the size of the deal definitely matters. Licensing both the series & movies matters a lot to the distributor.

2) Toei has the most control over One Piece & they have always steered it to kids networks. So even if DeMarco wants it, the best case he's likely to get is another open-ended license arrangment where it can be there one week & gone the next.

3) Spongebob is not only the #1 animated show in the US by a wide margin, but it's also a perennial top 25 cable show each week. Rarely does a week go by that doesn't feature more than one ep of Spongebob making that list & Spongebob premiere's have been known to crack the top 10. Toei values Sbob a lot more than Family Guy & would probably feel a sense of honor having it lead & anchor One Piece. What the shows have in common is obvious to any one who's watched them.

4) NickToons aired the Marvel shows before Disney bought Marvel. They are looking for something new to fill that space as they do not like the idea of promoting Disney chars on their network.
Is there a possibility that you can provide links for the things you say? Nothing personal, its just that your previous posts sort of lack legitimacy. Again, nothing personal, I'd just like to read these myself.

Korra, Avatar, TMNT, and Panda fans enjoying One Piece? I can easily see that. : )
Well at least that's a start. Add to that list : DB Z/GT, Yu-Gi-Oh, Monsuno, Voltron, Winx, & Speed Racer. If you think all of those fans will enjoy One Piece, then isn't it clear to you Nick Toons is a very good fit for One Piece? If we can reach agreement on that much then whether I think Spongebob fans will enjoy One Piece & you don't is irrelevant to the larger question pertaining to TOONAMI. That is who can offer Toei more $ for One Piece? I think the answer is clearly NickToons. TOONAMI operates on something of a shoe-string budget at [as]. They would have to come up with substantially more $ than NickToons because NT offers the target demog Toei wants. Toei is known for charging higher prices & accepting lower volume/exposure.

RagnarokSM, I will respond to you the same as the tweets involved with Megas XLR. Go google it yourself. I could care less what you believe or what you think of the legitimacy of my posts. The fact that you think I do really says something about your ego.

Unlike you, I don't carry a bias and assign a legitmacy rating to posters. I treat every post I read the same regardless of who the poster is. I respond to the message as if any poster wrote it.

So I googled One Piece and Nicktoons. I have found no concrete evidence that Nicktoons has expressed interest in One Piece. The closest thing I found was an article from 2008 that stated that Nicktoons was interested in airing One Piece for Toei, but that can't be trusted as it was only a rumor. So, as it stands, I assume that Nicktoons is content with the YGO: DM they just bought, and have no interest in airing One Piece at this time.

Good for you. I will assume that until they actually air the original in a multi-ep block format they intend to rotate it with Monsuno (much like they did with Hunters & Seekers) & it has no bearing on a decision to add more non TCG related anime. YGO has no greater influence on DB Z/GT than Monsuno had. Furthermore, it's not difficult to count how many slots Avatar has each day vs DB Z/GT. Clearly they have minimized DB Z/GT since their runs have ended. Unless they are content with all those Avatar slots, they naturally are looking for something new.

Of course that's only one part of this story. Until I actually hear something about Toei expressing a desire to air One Piece on TOONAMI, DeMarco's desire is inconsequential.

Alright then, I have a question: Do you assume the Nicktoons wants to pick up One Piece, or do you know for sure? Because if you know for sure, please show me a source.

FUNimation has at least 270 episodes of One Piece dubbed, and they're still going. I'm not sure if One Piece would do very well only airing one a week, considering it does have some slower episodes now and then, and suffers from some pacing issues in some arcs.

Personally, I'd like to see them start from the very beginning. Although the prospect of perhaps getting HD episodes on the air from 207+ is tempting....

Toei is not a hungry company in that you either play by their rules or you don't play. Any discussions involving One Piece will remain in private. Neither you nor I will know about it until a deal is struck. Until then we can just look at the situation logically based on what we know about NickToons, TOONAMI, & Toei. I have concluded that points to NickToons. Viacom has no other choice but to pursue anime because Disney now has Marvel & Star Wars & Warner has DC. Viacom is forced to either develop their own or acquire what is left. Clearly that involves anime.

Alright, I'll take your word for it. Not really in the mood to spend an hour researching what demographic Toei is interested in. You answered what I wanted answered, so I see no more of a reason to argue with you.

I still think that if DeMarco and Co. can get and put-up enough money for it, they'll licence One Piece. If they don't, Fairy Tail is a great show that would wonders with the the ratings of Toonami, even more so since it would be the basic cable premiere of it. I would actually rather see this on Toonami over One Piece, but only by a slim margin. Let's just hope that Toonami can sustain it's ratings.

As a person that has watched all episodes of both I can say that One Piece and Spongebob are nothing alike. I mean No offense, but based on what you are saying I have to assume that you do not know OP at all.

I disagree about Fairy Tail a great show. I don't know if it's a given it would do well.

The one ray of hope is that TOONAMI classic night did air DBZ uncut & I don't believe that was possible without Toei's consent. That's how tight the control is that they exercise on their signature properties. That suggests to me that if DeMarco can meet Toei's price he can get DBZ uncut for TOONAMI. But as I've said before Toei is not one to settle. They are going to ask for what they think DBZ uncut is worth regardless of competition or circumstances. So I think it's doubtful that DeMarco can meet it, but I will never underestimate Warner's emotions in all this. I think part of their decision to ok the Naruto per ep deal was to stick it to Disney fresh after they completed the Star Wars deal. I think they would like the idea of diluting the value of DB Z/GT on Nicktoons by offering DBZ uncut on TOONAMI. That will go only so far on price though.

I don't believe Warner feels anything towards One Piece so that makes it a tougher sale for DeMarco even if Toei warmed to the idea of uncut One Piece on TOONAMI. I have no familiarity with One Piece uncut dubs so I can't speak to the differences. My experience with One Piece is mostly via subs of a vulgar nature. I really can't imagine what Toei approved for an official uncut version.

I don't think NickToons has any interest in DBZ uncut because when you lengthen the drama like that it's harder to slice up an ep for a break after every 7-8 min. It's better suited for TOONAMI.

TheCtes: When I read a post like yours what comes to mind is "fan boy." The avg viewer of Spongebob or One Piece is not going to attest to having seen every ep. Nor are they going to mindful of every minatue detail either. What you see as crystal clear they will see has gray. The most noticeable traits of the two shows will catch both their eyes & ears & everything else will be a blur. The first thing the avg viewer of Spongebob notices is how the human pirate segways into the song. The vocal talent & music definitely has an impact on the avg viewer. The next thing would be the depiction of chars, traits, & personality. Would you not agree that greed/selfishness is a central vice featured in most plots of both shows? I would say the avg viewer would.

It's my mistake for not expecting backlash for using the word "common" in comparing characteristics of the two shows. An avg viewer sees them as just cartoons whereas a fan boy speaks about them as if they were sacred. Common isn't the word to best describe my point anyways. Compatibility works better. Do you think One Piece is compatible with Spongebob viewers? I think I've pointed out many reasons as to why already.

Maybe not a complete given, but I still think it would do pretty well. The way I see it, the show appeals to Naruto fans (at least, that's what the show sort of reminds me of), and the way the show is right now, and being new to basic cable never hurts. The only thing that I can really think that would hurt the series should it go to Toonami would be the comedy. But even then, people loved FLCL and that was comedy action. At least, that's my thoughts on it.

Saying that I've seen every episode of each was to say that I know what I'm talking about here, I've followed both for a long time, and they're far from alike. Spongebob is mainly a slapstick comedy. Sure One Piece has some of that mostly between arcs or early into them, but it's primary an action adventure series. A battle shounen. Naruto got about the same amount of slapstick comedy as One Piece really, would you call that similar. You'll have a hard time finding something without greed and selfishness involved in some way, but it limits itself to a few characters. The way I see it, you're just finding small topics or things brought up in some way or another in both shows and using that to state they are much alike. You could make almost every series alike that way.

I'll that Spongebob and One Piece are compatible in the way that they're from the same time and they might share some sort of fanbase because of that. Nick uses Spongebob to lead mostly everything, because it gets a lot viewers, there's bigger odds that a solid amount would stay through to the rest. One Piece would work much better with the shows on Toonami though, because it actually does has a lot in common with the shows on there.
