Digimon Adventure Gets a High School Sequel

As a huge Digimon fan, I am so stoked. Unlike Crystal, the animation should be really good now, and we're finally gonna get to see Alphamon in a 2D anime!

I do wonder why they switched all the voice actors for the humans even though the Digimon kept theirs.... But whatever, still stoked for this. I would give anything for a North American theater release.

I'm honestly kind of disappointed since I wanted this to be a TV series. The trailer does look cool and making this a six-part OVA should mean that it will have a consistent budget, but it will take a long time to finish it, much longer than it if it was a TV series. If there are production problems, which could easily happen, then it would take even longer. I'm not sure if we could get legal online subs for an OVA since I don't know if that's happened for theatrical movies. The fact that the trailers for this series have been subbed from the start does make me think we could get them sooner rather than later though.

Plus, I was also looking forward to watching a Digimon series subbed while it was airing from start to finish. I only did that with Young Hunters and boy was it was mistake to rush through Xros Wars just to get to that huge disappointment. I'll probably feel better about this later, but this leaves me with more mixed feelings than anything else right now.

November release date? I'm fine with that. This has been an insanely busy year for me, with all of my favorite franchises (Dragon Ball, Digimon, Yatterman, etc.) getting brand new material. I can wait. If it's all going toward giving us better animation and a more consistent schedule between releases, then I'm all for it.

(Mini-)Movie format? Also fine. It gives them more control over budget, pacing, animation quality, etc. I don't care if it's not a TV series. I just want it to be good. This is insanely rare for Toei. It's nice to see them looking like they're actually trying with this.

The new voice cast is the only thing that rubs me the wrong way. I'm trying to be as open-minded as I possibly can (and I've been generally pleased with everything so far), but I'm incredibly stubborn when it comes to this. The voice actors are the characters. I don't care if Toshiko Fujita's voice doesn't conform to what people think every generic high school boy in history should sound like. I want her and the rest of the crew. It's especially hard to swallow because I never once imagined that everyone would get replaced. Taichi and Koshiro? Sure, I was a little worried. But everyone? Yamato, Jo, and the girls? Ouch. Thanks goodness the Digimon cast is staying the same. Hopefully they can get the veteran actors for flashback scenes or something like that.

I wonder if this is why Fujita didn't reprise her role for the new CD Drama?

Aside from that, I'm very excited to see where things take us.

Im sorry to say that we already know Saban will Handle Adventure Tri. Even if they DO let go of the license, rumor has it that Toei did offer Digimon (Back when Xros Wars was up for grabs) to Funimation and they said no.

EDIT: Also sans the pretty nice action scenes, the trailer was SO STIFF. I hope the action scenes are more indicative of what we are going to get. Its not that Im a Sakuga freak. (No one is) but I dont want the OVA's to be as stiff. Even if the animation is better than say, Sailor Moon Crystal. I hope the stiff scenes were because they wanted to offer something but they either didnt have enough footage ready, or they wanted to spoil as little as possible.

A series of movies, huh? Well, on the one hand that means we'll have to wait even longer to see it, but on the other hand this might mean better quality and output from Toei and more to look forward to if each one is actually movie-length and not just heavily-advertised OVA's. While I would've loved to have had a proper TV Anime, I have far more confidence in Toei pulling out something somewhat decent for something on a movie-budget or that is a movie then I do for an actual TV series .

The animation in the PV at least looked pretty good :).

I wonder if that purple background with the Digimon is meant to be part of the new Evolution/Digivolution sequence?

Alphamon vs. Omegamon :D!!!

The new voice cast, of who I can recognize by name, looks pretty good. I would've preferred it if they kept the originals, since they did so for the Digimon, but Toei's always been 50/50 on that so I guess I'm not surprised. Hanae, Hosoya and Mimori should be great fits for their characters. Though honestly the highlight of the new cast for me is the fact that there are two Sentai alumni, both from Gokaiger in fact, in it. Junya Ikeda as Jo should be interesting to see :p.

Well I dont know quite what to say. Even though more digimon is a good thing I was hoping for a normal anime with new digimon, to fight against of course, and a near equal amount of development for all characters.

But now I think that their just going to use old digimon to fight against and most of the spotlight will shine on Tai and Matt.

While I agree most of it will be on Tai and Matt, just due to the pure awesomeness that is Omegamon, I'm sure the rest of the Chosen Not-Children-Anymore will still get to shine, probably by having their partners reach their Ultimate stages to be able to fight alongside with Tai and Matt. After all, the newest CD drama (which may or may not actually prove to be canon with tri.), featured Mimi's partner Palmon becoming Rosemon for the very first time. If Mimi could do it, why shouldn't Koushiro, Jo, Takeru, Sora, and Kari be able to?

As for new Digimon, well sure Alphamon doesn't count as new, but that three double-helix-shaped-tailed feline Digimon that was chilling under the bridge in the shade with that bespectacled girl will surely play a part in this, right? Plus, if we're seeing Alphamon of all peopl–er, Digimon, then a Hackmon, or even a Jesmon, isn't all that farfetched. I mean, all that 15th Anniversary mercy that featured him in it... Another thing I wanted to add: If the first episode features OMEGAMON VS ALPHAMON! (which will likely be the climax or final fight of the movie, I mean all that hype wouldn't be able to be topped in the same movie), then we can only go up from there, since it's counterintuitive to feature lesser fights to the in win the first part of six parts. I'm proposing that we will be seeing way more epic fights than this eventually, some of which will hopefully blow our minds with amazing animation and fight choreography.

I'm not much of a Digimon fan, but the announcement that this is going to be a six part movie-thing has me pretty interested. Certainly an interesting decision to go the Yamato 2199 route.

Can't say I see many negatives to it, apart from the already mentioned waiting periods.

With the series only running for six episodes we're likely to get a more character-focused story, something that is sure to be the best part of the series. Hopefully the storytelling is just as good.

While I can't deny I'm let down that we're not getting a TV series in summer and instead we're going to be waiting a long time for all these movies to roll out, it definitely means we're getting a much higher quality production. I had made peace with the shoddy animation that Toei was going to turn out for a new TV series, but instead we should get much nicer-looking animation with a much tighter story. The only thing that's going to be a drag is the waiting, but in a couple years we won't even remember that.

Ahh, just seeing some of the animation in motion is bringing a tear in my eyes. Can't wait for this, I so can't wait.

So, does this have any connection to Adventure 02 at all?

Nothing so far. I've heard some people speculate that Taichi having goggles indicate that 02 has been retcon out, but that seems like a bit of a stretch. He could have easily just gotten new goggles and they're focusing on that to bank on some more nostalgia. Besides that, most people wanted the epilogue retcon out, not the whole Adventure 02 series. We might get some references or quick cameos from the Adventure 02 cast, but the majority of focus will be on the Adventure cast most likely.

Comate,

I actually think it'll turn out to be the opposite for the first couple of films. Mostly action and the group goofing off. I doubt anything anything all that interesting will happen character and plot wise.

I will be completely fine if the first few "episodes" go for a victory lap down memory lane so long as everything's fun and paced well.

In regards to Saban and any potential dub by them, I wouldn't be against it on principle (and Funimation doesn't need this), but in a more perfect world, this would air on Toonami or go straight to DVD, with little-to-no edits because Tri is looking more and more like an outright nostalgia trip as opposed to the usual kid-oriented shenanigans of the past seasons. Whoever dubs this, if this gets dubbed, will hopefully bring back as many of the voice actors as possible.

I doubt that Tri would fit on Toonami, even if it was uncut. Although, straight to DVD with little to no edits sounds pretty awesome to me. It would be nice to bring in as many of the original cast as possible to reprise their roles. I don't know if Tri being a series of OVAs instead of a TV series makes that any more of a possibility, but it would be nice.

I want to note that the target demographic for Tri, since Toei's Press Releases as for "Adults/Fans who grew up with the original". So, while I don't think they may actual have content that wouldn't be suitable for children (or at least what Japan considered acceptable, anyways), I do think they're specifically aiming towards that Adult crowd and fan base. The fact that the voice cast for the humans was changed, also makes me think they're going "Otaku" pandering.

We also have no idea if Saban will go after the series. Right now, Toei Animation seems to be the one who is actively marketing the OVA/Movies right now for the foreign markets, plus at the upcoming Licensing Expo, Saban is completely hands off on the Digimon franchise there, rather it's Toei Animation (and some UK network for Fusion specifically) who are showing off the series. Makes me think they're more or less done with it and don't tend to pursue anything further with the franchise. However, this could indeed change, but we'll see.

There's also a chance that Toei Animation could entirely cut out the middle man for this series and do a similar release style that found in Bandai/Sunrise's Gundam Unicorn and The Origin. The fact we're already getting English promotional material for the series makes me think they're planning to try and reduce the time between Japan gets it and the west gets it.

Either way, I'm sure we'll find out soon what's going with the series. I just don't expect us to get an altered version, because this is not specifically aimed at children.

Since this series is mostly for older audiences, I do wonder what Toei will do with Digimon next when it's done?

Probably nothing until Bandai wants to push some new Digimon toyline.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
