C&C - Toonami Talkback [4/1]

Because I'm lazy on April Fools day to check and this is my only serious post for the day: What is the complete schedule last night for Toonami? I fell asleep in the middle of Tenchi.

The thing I loved about this whole thing was that..it really, really reminded me how golden those were anime were. I admit, I thought of my feelings towards the past were exaggerated. This beginning of April Fools told me.."NO, IT WAS AWESOME'.

I'm going to go ahead and try to watch all of Outlaw Star again, I seriously need to watch it.

12:00 - Bleach (NEW) - "Episode 247"
12:30 - Dragon Ball Z - "Save the World"
01:00 - Gundam Wing - "Heero, Distracted by Defeat"
01:30 - Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki - "Z"
(Tenchi went a little past the timeslot so the times from here on out are approximate)
02:15 - Outlaw Star - "Maze of Despair"
02:45 - The Big O - "Roger the Negotiator"
03:15 - Yu Yu Hakusho - "A Reason to Fight"
03:45 - Blue Submarine No. 6 - "Blues"
04:15 - Trigun - "Paradise"
04:50 - Astro Boy - "The Birth of Astro Boy"
05:20 - Gigantor - "Sting of the Spider!"

At this point they could just permanently rename ASA Toonami and nobody would care. The block today is probably much closer to what Toonami was in its peak era (Spring 2000-Winter 2002) than that disgrace of a block we ended up with 2008. All it means is exchanging one form of branding for another.

Why not this idea, Why not after the Cartoon network saturday morning cartoons Why does CN Just give saturday to tom 12pm and then 12am then at Tom can run bleach, fma, and the rest at of AS anime line up until 6 am sunday morning

Think about it 12pm saturday afternoon to sunday morning 6am that is over 18 hours of anime.. Do you agree?

People have posted the bumps and videogame reviews done for Toonami last night on youtube so I'm watching them right now. I don't think it's legal sources so I can't link it. I will tell you what I think when I'm done.

Oh and I would have no problem if Saturday Adult Swim was re-branded into Toonami. Never going to happen but that would be cool.

We may have gotten a serious treat last night by having Toonami on Adult swim, but it doesn't mean Cartoon Network is ready to bring back Toonami in a huge way.

Cartoon Network is by large, done with Anime. Even though Toonami was never exclusively intended to be a block of anime, a lot of people attribute the block to the anime surge in the US. Toonami was supposed to be a "Tsunami of Toons".

What IS reasonable to believe might happen, is Toonami takes over he airwaves of Adult Swim / Cartoon Network on Saturdays and with a bit more luck, maybe even Fridays.

This, of course, is all a shot in the dark, but I absolutely find myself wondering why they'd make new promos and bring back Steve Blum for a one shot thing.

The thing about all of this however, is I can easily see Toonami would generate a surge to the current Saturday night lineup, but unless they are willing and ready to add to it, it's going to be a short term surge.

The only thing that was missing was Peter Cullen's voice.

Despite a few...odd choices (Tenchi, Blue Sub #6, Gigantor) I am very satisfied and happy that they did this. It's pretty clear that bringing Toonami back would make a lot of people happy. You have nothing to lose, CN/Williams Street.

Saturday nights would be okay, except I'd need some sleep and they had better show something like Gurren Lagann (I'm all for new programming on Toonami) earlier on in the night. I wouldn't mind seeing Toonami on earlier though and perhaps on other days...?

Like perhaps, weekdays at 5 to 7 again?

Just came back from watching the bumpers and promos.

TOM makes Bleach sound interesting. I'm not fond of the show so that's a huge feat. Also hearing TOM say stuff in the Adult Swim Toonami meterial that he would never say durring the original run of the block. That's funny. Clearly the people who put together this joke knew what they they were doing and there are plenty of clever Toonami related comments. Bringing up that Toonami's shows were edited or how it never aired all of Yu Yu Hakasho. Those things are great.


The Fulse opening of the room was great too as thats why I avoided April Fools on Adult swim this year. I thought they were getting lazy airing The room every year and did not expect them to actually do something briliant like this. I wish I did not miss it and did not have to search You Tube for the bumpers and the Mass effect three review but that was awesome.

This is probably the final time we will ever see toonami and it was in my opinion better closure then the one we got in 2008. This time it's like Toonami ends in it's prime.

I think this was either a treat for hardcore fans that got more attention than expected, or an excuse to dip their toe in the water for a "90's are all that"-esque revival.

The key here is to do exactly what they did last night. Get free shows if they pimp out DVDs.

This way, they could get literally anything they wanted. Unlike their cocky attitude of "You pay us for airing your shows".

Sadly, its just not like that.

First off a minor correction:
- In the US, the company who wants to air the programming pays the companies providing it. Advertisers then pay the company who aired the shows.
- In JP, the company who wants to air the program pays the companies for time slots. Advertisers then pay the company who brought the time slot for air time to run commercials.

That's just outright for clarification as to not muddy the water going forward. That's not meant as a discussion topic.

That being said, I am pretty sure that Toonami 'paid' for the rights for one time airings of all these shows by giving free advertising time to the companies by show casing DVDs. William Street had to procure those rights by being innovative as their budget CERTAINLY does't have the room for paying for each of those shows for a one time shot. Funimation, Viz and Sunrise, all being long term friends with Toonami probably leased the episodes out for this special occasion. You're not going to see a deal like this happen again ---- or at least not on a regular basis.

Now what might be plausible is to make Toonami a voice for anti-piracy AND in combination with using it to advertise more DVDs and more games, it might pay for itself.

I wonder if Steve Blum would have a problem turning into the next Bill Mays (at least as for the DVD / Game world)?

It does. On Funimation Channel.

Once Funimation sees the impact that ToAS had last night, I'd imagine they'd want to push for more deals like this in the future, since they're getting free advertising of their products on basic cable television. As opposed to Funi Channel which they pay to run themselves and the audience is only the minority which get premium channels.

Damn straight. I was completely surprised by this. I thought Adult Swim was gonna run The Room only to show Tom viewing the movie. Awesome seriously awesome. Hope the ratings were good ( and seeing a lot people talking about it on other site I take it they were)enough to bring Toonami back.

I so wished I could have stayed up and watched this, but since I'm at home and we only have one TV with satellite, I wouldn't have been able to watch it even if I had wanted to.
