Adult Swim, Toonami Talkback: April 01, 2012

Thanks for the input on those. One more question...

Would FOX ever take back all of it's comedy shows for FX?

I can see a new Animation Domination on FX weeknights from 9:00AM-6:00PM. It's basically their version of Adult Swim Comedy.

I'm certain Turner Broadcasting is paying BIG $$$ just to keep FOX Animation on AS long as they can. IF something like this WERE to happen, both AS & TBS would be devastated. So much that they will lose those ratings and viewership to FX. We know how hard AS tried to keep Futurama, before it went to Comedy Central.

There are also local syndication deals still in place.

For example in my area:

Detroit TV Market

WJBK FOX 2 Detroit
Tuesday-Saturday
1:00AM King Of The Hill

Sunday, “FOX Animation Domination”
7:00PM The Simpsons
7:30PM The Cleveland Show
8:00PM The Simpsons
8:30PM Bob’s Burgers
9:00PM Family Guy
9:30PM American Dad!

WKBD CW 50 Detroit
Monday
12:00AM Futurama
6:00PM The Simpsons
6:30PM Family Guy
11:00PM The Simpsons
11:30PM Family Guy

Tuesday-Friday
6:00PM The Simpsons
6:30PM Family Guy
11:00PM The Simpsons
11:30PM Family Guy

Saturday
6:00PM The Simpsons
11:30PM Family Guy

Sunday
12:00AM Futurama

WADL 38 Detroit
Tuesday-Saturday
10:00PM American Dad!
3:00AM American Dad!

WGN America Chicago
Tuesday-Saturday
2:30AM Futurama
3:00AM Futurama

I'm certain for us Toonami fans, less ASC FOX shows would mean screen time for Adult Swim Originals and the NEW Toonami.

Thanks for the input on those. One more question...

Would FOX ever take back all of it's comedy shows for FX?

I'm not sure FOX could easily take them back. I think FX would have to bid and pay for the shows just like Adult Swim does.

One of the bigger impediments to FOX taking that sort of action is deals with talent on the various shows that give some of the talent on the shows a piece of the back end profits (i.e Seth MacFarlane presumably has a deal like this). These profits can include a cut of the syndication money. If FOX were to give FX, or another of their networks, a sweetheart deal to carry the reruns, FOX would be selling the syndication rights for below market value. This could give anyone who is contractually owed a percentage of the syndication revenue grounds to bring a lawsuit against FOX.

A similar situation occurred about fifteen years ago when Wind Dancer Production Group, the company that created and produced Home Improvement, sued DIsney. Wind Dancer accused Disney, which had recently purchased ABC, of attempting to give ABC a sweetheart deal to continue carrying Home Improvement, instead of charging the fair market value of the show. While this "synergy" would be a great deal for Disney and ABC, it would affect the profits of the third party, Wind Dancer. This story from the Los Angeles Times has a little more on the lawsuit:

http://articles.latimes.com/1997-02-25/business/fi-32095_1_wind-dancer

Basically, advantages to inter-company dealing can quickly fall apart when third parties are involved whose financial interest do not line up with those of the other companies.

Wait a minute. I'm hearing this talk about William Street snatching up 3 anime series? Where and when was this announced? I clearly haven't been brought up to speed

I feel like it's pure speculation, or if anything somebody taking what was joked about on a card in the past for everything it could mean.

I've only seen this mentioned in a random post on this forum with no source. Is there anything more to it? Otherwise it seems like a pretty weak rumor.

As far as I know its only rumor --- but sometimes rumors have a nasty habit of coming true.

That being said, I was out all night and am just post responding now. If something happened that made it more official, I haven't seen it --- and more importantly no one left a slue of nerd raging IMs for me to look at when I got home. If something official was dropped --- I'm kind of sure I would have heard SOMETHING by now.

That sounds like news from 2010 rather than something new.

Also, Paradox295, they will air the FOX shows all night on weekdays once The Cleveland Show hits. Seriously, that's what they will do. It will stink to not have shows that deserve weekday airings like Robot Chicken and Aqua Teen Hunger Force keep their slots, and who knows, they might, but I really think they'll air all the FOX shows in one hour blocks on weekdays, taking up 8 of [adult swim]'s 9 hours since they'll repeat the night's showings in the early mornings like they always do.

Yeah, I know. That's what I meant, sorry.

That's exactly what I was thinking of laying it out like, too. One hour blocks with DVR Theater expanded to 1 hour. eg: 9- KOTH / 10- TCS / 11- FG / 12- AD / 1- TCS / 2- FG / 3- AD / 4- Adult Swim DVR Theater / 5- KOTH.

I couldn't see all of Fox's shows moving to FX. Not atleast for a while. I believe they have syndication rights until 2014 or 16?

We're not gonna have a 7 (or 6) night Adult Swim with 100% originals. People only come for the Family Guy and stay for the originals.

Honestly, I think having all Animation Domination Mon-Fri, with Toonami taking Saturdays and Adult Swim on Sundays would be the best move.

Check out the latest ratings. The ratings for FG and AD are killer. Adding TCS to that mix, you have a ratings powerhouse which can run tons of advertising for Toonami and AS :D

So.....

All in all, what are the chances of Williams Street/Adult Swim/Cartoon Network actually going through with it and bringing Toonami back to the airwaves with a Saturday night run? It wouldn't be hard, they already have the programming and all they would need to do is create new packaging and bumpers.....which could get expensive. I don't know, I mean, I loved Toonami back in the day and I would love to see it come back, but a part of me just wants to leave the past buried and if people are willing to tune into a block that is airing the same programming just because a robot is talking before the commercial break than I kind of see that as sad in a way. I do want it back, but I don't know if the trade-off would be worth it.

Cartoon Network, Toonami Thread: 04-01-2012

Thanks Paradox295 for posting the latest Adult Swim ratings figures. That really helps me out. Unfortunately, the numbers don't lie. Family Guy will still be the KING, taking the 1-10 spots as long it's still on Adult Swim. Seems like we have a long way to go in-order to make NEW Toonami popular again on AS. Once again, thanks for all for answering my questions and playing the WHAT IF game. :tom:

It will be easily popular, since they can get free advertising during the "ratings powerhouse" of Family Guy and American Dad reruns.

Also, a lot of people were talking about the possibility of DBZ on Toonami.

See, I was thinking that it wouldn't work... but I had an idea. They could get cocky and start from the Ano Yo-ichi Budōkai arc/World Tournament saga/Episode 195.

"Think you know DBZ? Guess again. There's a whole 'nother saga those other guys didn't wanna show you. [Insert summary of the whole Buu saga here]. The most badass action cartoon of all time returns to it's rightful home this Saturday at 9. Only Toonami".

...steal Nicktoons' audience and use it as a gateway to attract fans of DBZ Kai who weren't around in '03. Could work.

I would LOVE IT if AS did that. I'm still ticked at Nicktoons for skipping that arc for GT.

Here's an idea that hasn't been suggested yet. I think that part of the reason last Saturday night was so successful is the fact most of the lineup, sans Bleach, was a complete surprise, so viewers were staying tuned to see what nostalgic anime would air next on Toonami. Adult Swim could use this to their advantage.

I suggest keeping Bleach, along with 1-3 other new anime premieres, as a "base" for the block. Then the rest could simply be listed on schedules as "Toonami" and kept a surprise. Each week, they could rotate different episodes of different nostalgic anime that have aired on Toonami in the past, similar to what they did last week - except with different anime each week. I think this could potentially keep the audience's attention on the block. I feel like once a schedule is established, people will get tired of watching the same old shows. Changing it up each week will keep the lineup fresh, and the old Toonami crowd tuning in to see what they will bring back next.

thts an ok idea but theres 2 problems 1- fans do not want to see old shows everyweek for like 3 mounths or even longer 2- lets say a new fan comes in sees dbz and is like wow this great he might tune in the nxt week to see it but the problem is it wont be there so he wouldnt get hooked on it the same with the other animes pple would stop tuning in cause they no y watch it whn i wont see tht anime again

A lot of people are. And due to the Fleeting Demographic Rule, there's a lot of people who didn't watch it the first time round, only saw DBZ on Nictoons and have no idea about the Buu Saga. Granted, most of these are under 18, but still. Good for getting them hooked.

It's a good idea on paper, but the novelty will eventually wear off, and people will lose interest because they aren't playing the episodes in order.

However, it would be better if they switched out shows when they finish their run, then return them at a later point instead of repeating them ad nauseum.

Example schedule (if they expand it to take up 9-12):

9.0p - DBZ
9:5p - DBZ
10.0p - Bleach (premiere)
10.5p - Bleach (premiere)
11.0p - New Anime (premiere) [FLCL if none]
11.5p - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
12.0a - Cowboy Bebop/Samurai Champloo
12.5a -Cowboy Bebop/Samurai Champloo
1.0a - Gurren Lagann/The Big O
1.5a - Gurren Lagann/The Big O
2.0a - Outlaw Star/Trigun
2.5a - Outlaw Star/Trigun
3.0a - Ghost in the Shell: SAC/Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2nd GIG
3.5a - Ghost in the Shell: SAC/Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2nd GIG
4.0a - Bleach (encore)
4.5a - Bleach (encore)
5.0a - New Anime (encore) [Double up on below if none]
5.5a - Something like Gigantor or Inuyasha. PS: Why do they even still have Inuyasha?!

:^: This for me as well. :^:

I've been lurking and reading all of this unfold and I'm quite mystified and stumped by all of this.

Firstly, I've been reading through a lot of speculation and wishes, hopes and dreams (including 1 claim that this Toonami relaunch is supposed to happen as early as this coming Saturday), but I have yet to across any concrete press or announcement. Has any of this actually been set in stone to happen yet? Or is everybody just jumping the gun? I mean no disrespect to anyone, I'd genuinely like to know.

Secondly, I have to agree with Manga4life here: as much as I enjoyed Toonami back in the day and wouldn't mind it returning in some way, shape or form, and even though it is true that all Turner or Williams Street would have to do in order to bring Toonami back would be to place new TOM bumps and wraps around their existing action lineups on either CN or Adult Swim (or both: I think a Miguzi style block for CN and the older-skewing Toonami for ASA would be a good idea, but I doubt Turner and WS would want to pay for 2 sets of new bumps), part of me has to wonder about the level of enthusiasm over this possible news and what it's aimed at specifically.

I could understand folks getting hyped about a possible return of Toonami if new (or at least new to CN/AS) shows were promised to come, but I'm scratching my head at the thought of people getting so pumped about the exact same shows which have already been airing for months and years just because of the possible addition of TOM, Sara and assorted robot bumpers. I've read similar posts by folks ragging on other CN blocks like Friday night (or Saturday morning) action or comedy Mondays (and Tuesdays) due to their lack of specialized bumpers, and it makes me wonder what exactly people are actually clamoring for. Do wraparounds really enhance a programming block that much?

A lot of people are. And due to the Fleeting Demographic Rule, there's a lot of people who didn't watch it the first time round, only saw DBZ on Nicktoons and have no idea about the Buu Saga. Granted, most of these are under 18, but still. Good for getting them hooked.

Well it would be problematic if Dragonball Z reruns garnered most of its ratings from younger viewers outside of the rest of the block's demographics. The [adult swim] Toonami probably should aim for teen and young adult ratings, not the tweens who are currently laping up Dragonball Z Kai. Of course, Dragonball Z is one of those odd shows (especially for anime) that can get significant viewers from almost any demographic. The Buu saga isn't very well regarded amongst the Dragonball fanbase, but I think that Dragonball Z reruns could score maybe....700,000 or so viewers? I know that seems low, but from that ratings report you posted, it seems that premiere Bleach only gets 800,000 or so viewers for new episodes. Hopefully, some promotion will elevate anime ratings (which are the lowest among all [adult swim]'s programming) to over 1 million, but for now that's my prediction of what the ratings would be like.

Example schedule (if they expand it to take up 9-12):

9.0p - DBZ
9:5p - DBZ
10.0p - Bleach (premiere)
10.5p - Bleach (premiere)

5.0a - New Anime (encore) [Double up on below if none]
5.5a - Something like Gigantor or Inuyasha. PS: Why do they even still have Inuyasha?!

Eh...I don't think that would be a very good schedule. There are too many reruns of old shows they don't have anymore, and we don't really need the encore slots. Like I've said before, Toonami's revival hinges on nostalgia, but it's survival depends on having new content and exclusive premieres and programming. When Toonami comes back (if it does) we should get at least two or three new series a year to keep things fresh. In addition, some of the acquistions should be long running series like One Piece that can keep up premieres year round. They can get back some older stuff for a quick ratings fix, but it's going to sour after a couple of weeks because people have seen the stuff before and the excitement of seeing it again will be gone. Honestly, the reruns of older stuff we will see will probably be the same stuff [adult swim] action has right now.The Fleeting Demographic Rule isn't quite as potent in an [adult swim] Toonami revival becuase the demographic they will be targeting will be shounen/shojo loving teens who have less interest in serious senin stuff and the folks who watched Toonami when they were kids.

Considering what [adult swim] has now, and factoring in maybe three new acquisitions (I've given example shows that I think are the most likely [adult swim] will pick up), and perhaps two token reaquistions for the "quick ratings fix" from nostalgic folks like I mentioned earlier, this is what I think a good schedule would be if Toonami stated at 9pm on Saturday.

9.0 Dragonball Z
9.5 Dragonball Z
10.0 Bleach (new)
10.5 Bleach (new)
11.0 Tiger & Bunny (new)
11.5 Inuyasha: The Final Act (new)
12.0 The Boondocks (made Toonami exclusive) (new)
12.5 Black Dynamite (made Toonami exclusive) (new)
1.0 The Venture Bros. (made Toonami exclusive) (new)
1.5 Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt (new)
2.0 YuYu Hakusho
2.5 YuYu Hakusho
3.0 Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
3.5 Durarara
4.0 Kekaishi
4.5 Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
5.0 Cowboy Bebop
5.5 Inuyasha

Let me explain my choices before anyone starts harping on me. The hours of DBZ and YuYu Hakusho serve to get through a lot of episodes of both series witin a year's time, so as to replace them the next year. Bleach has double premieres because it has enough episodes left and ability to do so now that the anime has ended in Japan. The three american series I chose are [adult swim] shows that have enough qualities in them to make them suitable for an [adult swim] Toonami. Yeah, they are comedies in execution, but so was the likes of The Powerpuff Girls and Bobobo-bobo-bobo (I know this is an anime, I'm trying to make a point about comedy-action shows on Toonami), whose additions to Toonami back in the day were welcome distractions from the over seriousness of the rest on the block. I expect that when the anime I chose finish their runs, they will replace the already rerunning shows in the early morning hours to make room for newer shows in their former timeslots, thus keeping rotations and the block fresh.

Finally, to answer the question as to why [adult swim] still has Inuyasha, it is simply because their license to air it hasn't expired yet, and because like Cowboy Bebop, it is one of their most memorable anime titles, and they respect it's significance in the past of the [adult swim] block and thus still like to air it. That, and the fact that it's easy, fan pleasing time filler.

Andrew mentioned on Twitter that Kai did well with adults too, on Nicktoons. DBZ would be a great 9pm slot, since it's suitable as a lead in, plus it's what would get people to go there in the first place. Toonami is synonymous with DBZ.

As for choosing the Buu saga. It would be damaging if they were showing more or less the same show Nicktoons is.

Eh...I don't think that would be a very good schedule. There are too many reruns of old shows they don't have anymore, and we don't really need the encore slots. Boondocks, Black Dynamite and Venture definitely won't be moving to Toonami. Adult Swim considers them comedies, and they'd be better suited to Sunday nights where they'd get better ratings, while the Saturday night slots could be used for flogging DVDs.

Premieres seem fine on both schedules, tbh. I wanna keep them 10-12 to make them accessable. With reruns, yeah, move them to post12am asap.

As for the encore slots, look at the ratings again. The Bleach encore got 419k, beating 7 other shows on the block.

Also, with the classic shows. I didn't wanna have hour blocks.. but it means the schedule changes frequently, and we need variety.

Didn't I say that like 4 other times in this thread ? =P

Possibly... I can't remember, sorry.

Also, it was me, not Man In Black. :P

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
