C&C - Toonami Talkback [4/1]

Considering what [adult swim] has now, and factoring in maybe three new acquisitions (I've given example shows that I think are the most likely [adult swim] will pick up), and perhaps two token reaquistions for the "quick ratings fix" from nostalgic folks like I mentioned earlier, this is what I think a good schedule would be if Toonami stated at 9pm on Saturday.

9.0 Dragonball Z
9.5 Dragonball Z
10.0 Bleach (new)
10.5 Bleach (new)
11.0 Tiger & Bunny (new)
11.5 Inuyasha: The Final Act (new)
12.0 The Boondocks (made Toonami exclusive) (new)
12.5 Black Dynamite (made Toonami exclusive) (new)
1.0 The Venture Bros. (made Toonami exclusive) (new)
1.5 Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt (new)
2.0 YuYu Hakusho
2.5 YuYu Hakusho
3.0 Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
3.5 Durarara
4.0 Kekaishi
4.5 Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
5.0 Cowboy Bebop
5.5 Inuyasha

First off ---- WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much shonen there dude.

You have an HOUR dedicated to Bleach, DBZ and YYH. That's three hours.

A good Toonami block is always going to be diverse. Dedicating more then an hour to shonen series is painful and uncalled for. Heck, no shonen series should have an hour unless you're trying to burn through episodes for another reason.

You'll also doing a major disservice to the new acquisitions and basically dropping them in a time zone very few people will watch them. That's horrible treatment for those series unless you really want to kill them off or send a clear message to the viewership that you aren't interested in those properties.

Remember the mentality that works BEST for blocks like this: bring someone in to see the shows they want to see then encourage them to explore other shows.

Bleach is your anchor series and DBZ can serve as one too to some degree. A good schedule make good use of attracting people to watch those and have shows that appeal to their interests around there.

This has already been said, but The Boondocks, Black Dynamite and The Venture Brothers wouldn't be a good fit on an Adult Swim Toonami. Sure, all 3 shows poke at the action genre, but at heart they're comedies, and that's how AS categorizes them.

What would be the problem with anime prems. at 10-12? Do they generally not work there?

Also, I have double Bleach in mine, too. There's 100 episodes left after this season, which means we would have 1 year until it finishes. By then, there'll be another long running shonen available to take it's place. Probably Beezlebub or something. I can see that flying with the Bleach crowd.

Beezlebub was just cancelled in Japan as well.

Wow --- Bleach got canceled ? How did I miss this?

I seriously had to go look around as soon as I saw that. That came out of no where for me.

For a saturday night toonami, i would be against ANY old epic long shonen series.
Seriously think about it; even if you gave it an hour, it would still take 3 YEARS to get through all of DBZ. And for most adult viewers watching the block it would more than likely be just reruns. Furtharmore the episode pacing is horrendous meaning that even with an hour the plot would barely move week after week (And nick holds the rights to the much shorter dbz kai so that option would probably not be available)

If you are gonna include any kind of really long shonen series, it should be something NEW. That's why i have little against bleach on the block, because if it its taking forever, its atleast bringing something new to the table and not just reruns (by which i mean ran previously here in the states on either toonami or adult swim). Now don't get me wrong, i do think their might be some value in those older shows; the adults who watched those shows as kids will have not seen them in ages and thus watch for the nostalgic value and those that didn't watch them probably never did thus they will be new to them... But when it comes to Bad pacing and reruning OLD series for a once a week block, i can tolerate one, but not both

Shows I think might be good for saturday night toonami...
Soul Eater, Sengoku Basara, Elfien Lied, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, The Rebuild Evangelion Movies, Black Butler, Hellsing, Black Lagoon, Gurren Lagann, GTO, Bacanno, Gundam 00 (or age; though i have not watched it yet)

Old shows i'd like to see a comeback
Tenchi Muyo, Outlaw Star, Gundam 08th Ms Team

I think you might have to expect some concessions... when it comes down to it, adult swim is not gonna be willing to drop a successful series from the saturday night line up just to satisfy the anime/action fans. Frankly, you may want to even cut out 9-10 since it will be tough trying to get them to give up king of the hill (even though it airs every other night of the week)... though maybe you can try to convince them to air their adult swim comedies like boondocks 10-11 if don't want them part of the block, and thus toonami would then kick in at 11 pm, instead of 9.

Yeah it was cancelled but who knows... It might get a final act or some movies.

10-12 is a fine time for premieres, 9 is bad but 1 am is not better than 10. 11-1 is sort of the money spot but 10 isn't bad like it was before people got used to AS starting earlier.

True but remember with long series an episode a week will take way to long. DBZ none condensed with fillers DBZ can't be a once a week show (Bleach can't ether at this point but it works since it's been running for a while) DBZ needed weekday premieres due to it's long length. Even two episodes a night would take for ever. An hour of DBZ or Bleach is still not even enough and would not be "burning though" the show as it would still take years with two episodes one day a week.

I agree diversity is great and yes a good Toonami block was diverse but Toonami at it's best was also Monday though Friday block.

Note I loved Saturday Toonami but really some shows benefit from five days a week.

Now I don't want Shonen anime on "Adult" swim at all but really at this point where else can it go?

I'm sorry if there seems like too much shonen, but I don't really know many new non-shonen series that [adult swim] would be interested in or would pick up. I gave DBZ and YYH hours because, yes, I wanted them to burn through the episodes so that they could keep rotations fresh by bringing in new series. I chose them as the two classic series I though [adult swim] would pick up again because both are Funimation licensed shows (since DBZ is synonomous to Toonami I figured they might as well take two classic series from Funimation again rather than going to another distributeur) that have a lot of episodes to last at least one year without repeating. I really don't see [adult swim] picking up more than two classic series a year if they bother to do so at all, because, really, the acquisitions budget should be spent on new stuff, and considering the paucity of that right now, I don't want them to bother wasting money on shows already run.

I gave Bleach an hour just because it has enough episodes to air two new episodes for the next year. My goal was also to make a schedule with no encores or airings of shows that would repeat more than twice a year (I gave Panty & Stocking slack because it would be newer than stuff like Big O, and thus the repeats less bothersome).

I don't understand what's "painful and uncalled for" in having more than an hour of shonen series. I take it you dont really care for shonen series, but that's the main anime action genre, and isn't Toonami about the finest action cartoons? On [adult swim] we wont get straight up american action shows like when it was on Cartoon Network, and even then stuff like Justice League can be classified as shonen. I don't think you'd want slice of lifes, comedies without action elements in setting and plot, or milder kids action properties on a new Toonami, even if they were anime. Really, that leaves just shonen, shojo, and senin stuff at the end, and I dont think the target demographic of a new Toonami on [adult swim] would embrace the latter two genres as much as shonen anyway. Come to think of it, a lot of Toonami's programming was shonen stuff even back in the golden era, or at least they were the most popular. The longevity of Dragonball Z in premieres and reruns on Cartoon Network until their anime purge in 2008 is a testament to that.

I didn't make that schedule as a schedule that I would like much so as one that I thought they would do based on what they had, popularity of given shows, and content of said shows. In a more ideal schedule, I would have no double premieres, five straight hours of new and varied programming, followed by four hours of half-year rotating former content. The schedule I made isn't what I want them to do, but what I figure they would do, with a little optimism in having no encore slots.

You'll also doing a major disservice to the new acquisitions and basically dropping them in a time zone very few people will watch them. That's horrible treatment for those series unless you really want to kill them off or send a clear message to the viewership that you aren't interested in those properties.

Aside from Panty & Stocking, the new acquisition premieres are in very watchable timeslots. But even the slot I gave to Panty & Stockingisn't bad for saturday night premiers, and there have been shows in the past that have premiered in that timeslot. Also, I figured Panty & Stocking was rather...mature content wise, and it wouldn't be very good to air it right after a standard shonen series like Inuyasha: Final Act, so I used established shows like The Boondocks to transition to it properly.

As for YuYu Hakusho, it isn't a new series, and doesn't have the ability to draw ratings and doesn't have a lot of merchandise like Dragonball Z, so I scheduled it right after the premiering shows. People overestimate how well reruns of shows do. Fans of YuYu Hakusho and a lot of other old Toonami shows haven't exactly been troubled to find dvd's of those series. Forget about new generations, because [adult swim] targets teens and adults, who have had ample time to watch and discover Toonami shows from ten years ago. So it shouldn't have priority over premiere shows or a ratings powerhouse like Dragonball Z, and honestly, 2am isn't a bad time to air these reruns anyway. There'd be plenty of people willing to watch it at that time.

Huh, I thought I did that in my schedule. I had Tiger & Bunny sandwiched between two popular franchises (Bleach and Inuyasha), and had Panty & Stocking follow accesible comedy-action shows simmilar to it with the likes of The Boondocks and The Venture Bros. Listen, I limited my schedule to incorporate three new acqusitions and two old ones. I chose the ones I thought they would most likely pick up given the ease of acquiring them, histories of sucess, content, and just the stuff [adult swim] likes these days. They can suprise me and get whatever, I'm game. The stuff I chose is just an educated guess of what could happen, and believe when I say I was ovelry optimistic in creating that schedule as well.

This has already been said, but The Boondocks, Black Dynamite and The Venture Brothers wouldn't be a good fit on an Adult Swim Toonami. Sure, all 3 shows poke at the action genre, but at heart they're comedies, and that's how AS categorizes them.

Bobobo-bobo-bobo and The Powerpuff Girls were simmilar, but I felt that they fit in just fine with the rest of the lineups they were in. I feel The Boondocks, Black Dynamite, and The Venture Bros. would also fit in just fine. Really, you can't expect [adult swim] to suddenly get a bunch of anime acquisitions for a new Toonami since they barely get any from year to year these days. And it wouldn't make sense to air older action cartoons that they have access to like Teen Titans since those shows are more suited for younger audiences in content (not to mention they'd probably do worse than anime on late saturday nights). And comedic shows are what the main audience of [adult swim] likes, and if you want to draw people to a Toonami block on [adult swim] that starts at 9pm you need to have something the major audience can be drawn to, and something that will encourage them to stay through the night. Putting The Boondocks and simmilar shows wouldn't compromise Toonami's mission to show the best action cartoons around because most of its epsiodes have action elements and it's anime-esque in design. If anything, placing stuff like it on the block could draw in viewers who normally wouldn't watch anime and action cartoons and interest them in the other shows on the block, boosting overall ratings. They have these shows at their disposal, and can use them easily without risk or cost, so they can draw in viewers and advertisers to Toonami more easily, which means potentially more money from ad revenue, which means more cash to invest in the block, which equals new anime acquisitions. It's strategy, plain and simple.

And listen, guys, I love Gurren Lagann and Soul Eater and a lot of other anime that haven't aired on television in the states, but most of them don't belong on a new Toonami. They have been out in the states for years, and are online legally, and don't have new content comming up soon, or have merchandise other than dvd's that will really sell. The potential isn't there because they have been out before with only modest sucess. And they wouldn't be new, or leech success off of a preexisting installment of some franchise or get big rerun ratings like our mainstream old pal Dragonball Z, not to mention there is no nostalgia that's gonna draw people to them like old Toonami classics like Outlaw Star and Tenchi Muyo! And it costs money to get such shows, and it takes up airtime. Why waste money and airtime for a series with no future potential, instead of investing in a show like One Piece that still has never before seen in the U.S. episodes under it's belt, longevity, and even merchandising potential that is sustainable. But if everything the show has to offer is out already, there's not a really strong fanbase who will buy merchandise, and if too much time has passed, the ratings and revenue won't be that good. This is why Neon Genesis Evangelion failed on [adult swim] before. Do you think they'd risk the same mistake again?

Toonami should focus on new stuff, first and foremost, use shows like Dragonball Z and The Boondocks to support ratings, and keep older stuff around only for a short while before people take it for granted and get bored with it, rotating every half-year to make the best use of what they have at their disposal. And when I say new stuff, I mean new stuff. Anime premieres on television that aren't already available on dvd and couldn't have been seen before legally. That kind of inital exclusivity is what really draws in ratings and interest, and that's really what the new Toonami needs to survive. Great anime like Gurren Lagann have become casulalties as [adult swim] has become the only diverse (not so much these days) anime acquirer, but they are in the past. There is new stuff on the horizon, and Toonami shouldn't try and salvage the past, but seize the future, make it their own, grow, survive, until it returns to its once glorious stature of the home of the finest action cartoons on the planet.

Don't dwell in the past, think of the future.

^No way bro. Gurren Lagann should definetely be on Toonami. It truly is the face of Toonami. Action, comedy, death, and hype to the umpteenth power. Its run on Sci-fi was pretty average, but its through sci-fi that I even discovered the series, in "2009"... here's what it could look like.

please ignore the fact that this opening is focused on neotoonami. The clip is 3 years old, and hasn't been touched/altered since. What I'm alluding to, is what GL "could" look like on toonami[as]

I personally think the opening is alright, but my only gripe is showing scenes from the 2nd half. Hopefully hypothetical Toonami[as] won't do that.

Michiko to Hatchin would be perfect for a Toonami infused adult swim, too bad it still hasn't been picked up.
Tiger and Bunny and Panty and Stalking are also great choices. And personally I think Hajime no Ippo would be a great pick too.

Since most of my choices are just wishful thinking anyway I'll throw out some other crazy ideas.
I would love to see Berserk or the subbed version of Fist of The North Star. I think Lupin the 3rd needs to come back, maybe they can pick up the new series.

Oh and they need to pick up Sakamichi no Apollon whenever it gets licensed.

As for older series that have already been played on Toonami or AS, I think Yu Yu, Rurouni Kenshin, Outlaw Star, Tenchi, or Trigun would be good choices.

Cartoon X,

I don't have a problem with shonen series --- heck I identify with them better in many cases then other anime. But too much shonen is --- too much.

I've explained my views on this many times in this thread. I can't find a good passage in this thread to refer you to quick but I'll link you my post on the official Toonami forums:
http://boards.adultswim.com/t5/Toon...nami-lineup/m-p/64396385/highlight/true#M3211

The quick, down and dirty TL/DR version is this:

  • I feel Shonen series would be best served by giving them the DBZ Kai treatment or the Sailormoon Movie treatment. Beyond other things, it makes weekly installments have more progression (and easier to watch with only being weekly installments) and provides a good reason to pitch DVDs (to see the full series).
  • Shonen series deserve a weekday place to air if one can be maneuvered. Weekdays 12-1 seems ideal to me, but I'm forced to concede its too much of a cash cow for Family Guy. 1-2 might be plausible as well.
  • Another running thought has been to give Boomerang a Toonami slot. This would require a paradyme shift towards Cartoon Network using Boomerang more like Nick uses Nick Toons or Disney uses DXD. Its hit or miss if this would happen.
  • Now knowing that Bleach has officially ended --- in my book --- there might not be a pressing need to do anything new with Bleach. Unless "Toonami" feels compelled to go grab Naruto Ship or Onepiece (or another shonen). Running through Bleach with one hour premiers would be fine provided we aren't adding more of shonens to the block. A potentially better tactic for long running animes can be worked on in the mean time.
Ok, that's really not TL/DR, but it summaries my views without too much trouble.

I don't understand what's "painful and uncalled for" in having more than an hour of shonen series. First off, I find that when people speak of shonen, they often use it as a distinction more specifically to the epic long fighting anime's like DBZ, bleach, one piece and so forth. I mention this because people don't often lump series like Full Metal alchemist along with those series despite it also being a shonen because they have a VERY different appeal. One thing your schedule has is about 4 hours worth of the former type of shonen, the big epic fighting types, which in turn feels very limiting since it leaves less room for the other types of shonen which are more varied and have a different appeal... with so much of the epic fighting type shonen, you are really limiting the variety. There is so much potential variety you can have, but it feels like you are giving almost half of the entire block to a single genre.

And then there's seinen which WOULD be very popular amongst the new toonami's target audience. The OLD toonami was a afternoon/evening block aimed at young teen. the new toonami however would be on late saturday night, where's it target demographic is adults and older teens; as such it would more resemble toonami's midnight run, which took itself much more seriously and had series that were targeted towards an older audience... This is where Seinen comes in. I mean you really don't think that a series like Black Lagoon would appeal to teen and adult action seekers? Hell one of the most well known is ghost in the shell and that's one of the series that adult swim refuses to ever let go of, thus showing it to be one of its most successful...

As for YuYu Hakusho, it isn't a new series, and doesn't have the ability to draw ratings and doesn't have a lot of merchandise like Dragonball Z, so I scheduled it right after the premiering shows. Again, i think shows like DBZ and Yu yu Hakushou would be terrible. With their terrible pacing the plot would barely get a chance to move anywhere. I mean really, the april fools day epsidoe of DBZ happened to be nothing but 30 minutes of Gohan and Cell blasting eachother with a single attack. The pacing for these series is so hurrendous that they are practically unwatchable when forced to nothing more than a single week viewing; the main purpose of the Kai treatment was to FIX those pacing issues... maybe on a daily block they might get somewhere, but not so much a weekly block. Furtharmore, the target demographic is those that have likely seen this series when they were kids when they watched many of the episodes mutliple times because it took forever for toonami to move on to the next arc. Frankly i can't help but think that many, like myself, will wind up just skipping it reairings... I mean really, in some cases it could take MONTHS to finish a fight; a fight that much of the target audience has already seen.

And its odd you would make half a post about series with no future when that's EXACTLY what yuyu hakusho is at this point... its been over since the 90's and hasn't even come out with a new video game in years. Its done.

Toonami would be sufficient enough to me if it's just Saturdays at 9 PM to 2 in the morning on Sunday, followed by reruns. I think a mix of the popular long-running shonens with shorter would be fine. Of course even more would be fine too

And it wouldn't hurt to have something like Jetstream again, to stream the TV lineup as well as other Toonami shows exclusive to the website.

Also I don't know if this correlates with Toonami but read this:

http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/20...core-pawn-regular-show-conan-nba-more/127348/

"Across the first week of April, Adult Swim ranked as basic cable’s #1 network for Total Day Delivery of young adult and young men demos—adults 18-34, 18-49 & 18-24, as well as men 18-34, 18-49 & 18-24. Versus the same time period last year, the late-night network scored delivery gains among adults 18-34 (523,000/ up 7%), adults 18-24 (301,000/ up 20%), men 18-34 (307,000/ up 1%) and men 18-24 (179,000/ up 14%)."

I really think you're wrong about Yu Yu's pacing, personally I think its the best paced shonen I've ever seen. Most fights don't drag on that long and they aren't like in other series where its like an episode of just powering up or staring at each other. Theres usually always something going on in Yu Yu Hakusho.

Its hard to keep track of everything going on in all the Toonami threads these days, but I figured I'd (re)post it here in case I missed it being said earlier in the thread.

Jason DeMarco of Adult Swim / William Street confirmed Toonami won't be on this weekend. He further said "stay tuned" and "getting Toonami rolling is a ton of work" (actual quotes - cuss words removed in case mods still frown upon that being in quotes).

It sounds like any hopes of an encore this weekend just isn't in the books --- but you never know. Something random could happen.

Steve Blum has said about the same on various social media.

Would the the shows REBORN or DNAngel fit in for AS toonami?

Would the the shows REBORN or DNAngel fit in for AS toonami?

Reborn: Yes, if it was licensed. Which it isn't.

D.N. Angel: As someone who has watched the series: NO! The show is mostly a school romance with some supernatural elements. Its not an action show at all, and maybe has three fights the whole series.

Anyway, I have no problem with AS airing Shonen shows, as long as they're good anime.

Oh ok because I was trying to think of shows that had action but is also really funny. I tend to watch the funny ones more when I feel like I'm having a bad day.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
