"Channel Awesome" Talkback, Part 21 (Warning: Strong Language Throughout)

The vlogs constantly make out people watching to be the "HOW DARE YOU!!" comment rage type.

@Light Lucario How were they insulting their audience

I...personally rather enjoy the V-Logs and don't really understand all the anger. Sure, they poke a bit of fun at people who complain about every little detail missed from time to time, but I never felt it was overly malicious or to an annoying degree or anything. Just always felt like two guys shooting the breeze and getting out rough, first impressions about a cartoon to me. I like how casual it is. That's just me, though. If they're not your cup of tea then, hey, different strokes, I guess. :/

This.
They "insult" the audience by saying how some people will furiously post on Facebook and YouTube comments that they forgot a small detail and other nitpicks and call the brothers idiots from time to time for doing so. That's it. And trust me, that does get annoying.
Their v-logs of the Avatar series, Gravity Falls, and Steven Universe are the best things he's making right now, IMO.

Dissing their audience only accentuates how irrelevant Channel Awesome has become in the past three years. One must wonder how much money/fans Doug and Rob are losing now on the site.

Wow......

That was hilarious. The whole special was so painfully acted and cheap. It's one of the best videos that he's put out for awhile.

It's been awhile since I've seen their v-logs, but I remember how they would often just assume that everyone pointing out mistakes, name corrections or stuff that they've forgot were just the kind nitpicky kind of fans. While I'm sure that many of the people who do that are those kind of fans, claiming that all of them are like that is kind rude. I don't know if that's any different with their Steven Universe and Gravity Falls v-logs though, so I can't comment on them. I just hope that no one jumps all over me, insults me and gets on my case for this just because I don't remember every detail of their previous v-logs. Similar stuff has happened and it's one reason why I post so infrequently here, so hopefully no one bites my head off for these comments about their v-logs.

I have watched all their Steven Universe vlogs and they have never insulted their fans. Douchey McNitpick was more "insulting" than anything from their vlogs. If you can't take little lighthearted jabs at some negative comments, you are visiting wrong site.

That seems to hit the nail on the head in my mind. That said, I think what Lord Dalek said is correct, and that CA has become less and less relevant, though I don't think it's because of them dissing people so much. Really, it all goes back to their attempts to end Nostalgia Critic back in 2012. It wasn't just that they ended it, it was the way it was done. Actually, I do kind of remember Doug and Rob teasing people in the Scooby Doo commentary for not realizing that was the last episode. In hindsight, Scooby Doo kind of was the last episode.

I suspect Tim & Eric have brought themselves to sexual arousal with that Penelope Pumpkin video.

I liked CR!'s Sinistar mask.

I don't find it something to take offense at though. Anyone who's been in a fandom knows that there is always some Ubernerd who takes the time to comment on the smallest detail, and some of them are rather rude about it. It's just a fact of geekdom.

I mean, who wouldn't chuckle at the thought of someone writing a 100+ page refutation of RedLetterMedia's Phantom Meance review?

I do understand the repetition of something can become grating - maybe Doug and Rob don't realize that they makes the same joke over and over again, and past its point. After all, when you're doing a casual video blog, one doesn't take the time to write down what to say before hand.

Uh considering they have said the numbers are actually higher NOW then they were years ago due to moving to youtube and doing episodes with longer sketches and other characters in them, that's a lie. And seriously since they came clean on how Demo Reel seriously under-performed, they'd do the same thing if Nostalgia Critic wasn't working. Which it is so... sorry what you said is 100% incorrect on that front.

To be fair it does also keep coming up because they also keep being nit picked to death over and over again so it's sort of a vicious cycle. I do admit they do repeat it a bit too often but eh that is rarely if ever the focus of the video and it's still on the actual episode. Granted they don't cover talking about everything but they still try and hit the most important notes of an episode. Like the latest one up for GF "Weirdmadgeddon part 1" where obviously there was some production work done to this vlug. Those who have sene it should know what I mean when I say that.

Calluna's review of Return to Halloweentown is up:

It was an entertaining review and covered both stuff I liked and disliked about the movie quite well. I actually thought that High School Musical came out before Halloweentown High and not the other way around. While it wasn't surprising that they made a big deal out of the actor to further hype up this movie since High School Musical was so popular, I agree that it did make the setup for their romance feel really weird. It does surprisingly work well enough due to their interactions and growing chemistry over the course of the film, but given that Marine and Ethan barely had any scenes together in the previous movie with no hint of a budding romance, it felt pretty forced. I don't think that the comedy scenes with their mother bothered me that much though. They weren't funny, but they weren't bad enough to make me hate them with a passion.

I didn't know that Kimberly J. Brown said that she was available for the movie. I was under the impression all this time that she wasn't able to do it because she was working on that Big Bad Wolf. While replacing the main actor at this point wasn't a good idea, especially if they could have gotten her to reprise her role, I'm not sure if I could have seen her as Marine with the way she was written here. Despite being eighteen, Marine came off more immature and naive than I think she would have been after the events of the previous movies. As Calluna points out, she wasn't a saint in the previous installments, but I don't think that I could have seen her using magic for everything and being upset that there was no magic all the time in Halloweentown. I could have seen Marine act like that for the second movie, but not for the fourth. Maybe having Sophie be the protagonist instead of writing her off with Aggie would have worked a bit better in that regard. She wouldn't have had the maturity and experiences Marine had, so that could have made the immature factor feel less random and forced in. They probably couldn't use Ethan as a romantic lead since I think he would have been older, but that could have been one way to solve the issue without getting someone else to play Marine.

There are cliches and plot devices throughout the movie and the ending does seem like it could have been hinting at some kind of continuation, but it was a pretty decent movie all things considered. It does have a lot more effort than they did for Halloweentown High. Calling the third movie safe is fitting, but dull as dirt would be even more accurate. Return to Halloweentown has its fair share of problems, but it does have more of the Halloweentown flare and charm that was seriously lacking in the third movie. Having Aggie for more than an extended cameo might have been nice too, but I guess that they didn't want to risk revealing the big twist near the end. It's not the best movie in the series, but it was a better note to end it with than Halloweentown High and I enjoy watching it every year.

I was expecting a Nostalgia Critic review of Hocus Pocus, but instead, we got a Demo Reel episode of Hocus Pocus. I'm starting to wonder if Doug is tired of doing NCs, and wants to do Demo Reel instead.

It also fails as a parody, since the references would just fly over the heads of the people who didn't watch the movie. It's like those bad parody movies with nothing but references, and it won't be funny to anyone who didn't see the original product (and still probably won't be funny to the people who did)

This is gettin' sad. A recreation of a movie that's 100% your own content is a parody, not a review.

This is the kind of thing he was worried SOPA would do to his videos and now he's done it voluntarily.

Doug already gave Hocus Pocus an abridged review in Disneycember, so maybe he just felt doing another standard NC review of it would've been redundant.

And yeah, Doug was already tired of the standard NC formula around the time of To Boldly Flee, which is why he intentionally tried 'killing off' the Critic to start Demo Reel, and even after bringing NC back, he kept the other actors on and now keeps doing experimental stuff like skits and stories and crossovers instead of just sitting in a chair snarking about the movies. The new NCs can be hit or miss at times, but the guy should be able to do what he wants to do. Doug clearly didn't want to just revert back to the old formula (he's already done over 200 Nostalgia Critics so I can understand if he feels a little burnt out on that), he clearly wants to expand into other styles and venues and has wanted to for some time, so viewers can either simply contend with the new style of NC videos or just move on to something else.

Personally, I think that Doug should reduce the Nostalgia Critic to only one episode per month (as James Rolfe did with The Angry Video Game Nerd) and then just do Demo Reel, Sibling Rivalry, Real Thoughts, Doug Reviews and editorials the rest of the month.

I've pretty much stopped watching the NC. The criticisms I had with the show just added up over time and I'm simply not enjoying the show like I used to.

The only episodes I watched this year have been:
-Did Tom and Jerry Kill Themselves?
-The Dark Age of Film
-Top 11 Funniest Animaniacs episodes
-Planet of the Apes
-Top 11 guilty pleasure Halloween specials

Yeah, I've never seen Hocus Pocus so I'm sure 90% of the material in here would be puzzling to me.

It's also a bit disingenuous, since without clips we're forced to take NC's word for it on how "ridiculous" a movie is. And when we're relying on someone's reenactments/parodies who hates the movie to begin with, it's a given that the skits are going to be biased towards the NC's opinion, which means he could over-exaggerate (or worse, fabricate) flaws and the audience would never know.

This is just getting sad. It was bad enough when he did the Jurassic World review which was opened with that whole skit about how Doug and Rob are apparently too real for Hollywood.

I can appreciate being tired of a project but no one owes him a livelihood built on vanity projects. He already tried Demo Reel, people hated it and he got moody that fans wouldn't support him unconditionally.

I've followed Doug since he started with grainy ten minute videos on YT but more and more I'm annoyed by him, his family and the company he's the face of. He doesn't appreciate how lucky he's been.

Watched the live-action "Moana" today and felt nothing that special compared to the original 2016 film. In fact, I don't remember much from the first animated film, but I think they barely changed anything in the 2026 version
@Sam the Cartoonist is right, I've registered on this site two times and I've enjoyed it! :) I'd posted this back in 2016, over ten years ago!
