Calluna's review of Return to Halloweentown is up:
It was an entertaining review and covered both stuff I liked and disliked about the movie quite well. I actually thought that High School Musical came out before Halloweentown High and not the other way around. While it wasn't surprising that they made a big deal out of the actor to further hype up this movie since High School Musical was so popular, I agree that it did make the setup for their romance feel really weird. It does surprisingly work well enough due to their interactions and growing chemistry over the course of the film, but given that Marine and Ethan barely had any scenes together in the previous movie with no hint of a budding romance, it felt pretty forced. I don't think that the comedy scenes with their mother bothered me that much though. They weren't funny, but they weren't bad enough to make me hate them with a passion.
I didn't know that Kimberly J. Brown said that she was available for the movie. I was under the impression all this time that she wasn't able to do it because she was working on that Big Bad Wolf. While replacing the main actor at this point wasn't a good idea, especially if they could have gotten her to reprise her role, I'm not sure if I could have seen her as Marine with the way she was written here. Despite being eighteen, Marine came off more immature and naive than I think she would have been after the events of the previous movies. As Calluna points out, she wasn't a saint in the previous installments, but I don't think that I could have seen her using magic for everything and being upset that there was no magic all the time in Halloweentown. I could have seen Marine act like that for the second movie, but not for the fourth. Maybe having Sophie be the protagonist instead of writing her off with Aggie would have worked a bit better in that regard. She wouldn't have had the maturity and experiences Marine had, so that could have made the immature factor feel less random and forced in. They probably couldn't use Ethan as a romantic lead since I think he would have been older, but that could have been one way to solve the issue without getting someone else to play Marine.
There are cliches and plot devices throughout the movie and the ending does seem like it could have been hinting at some kind of continuation, but it was a pretty decent movie all things considered. It does have a lot more effort than they did for Halloweentown High. Calling the third movie safe is fitting, but dull as dirt would be even more accurate. Return to Halloweentown has its fair share of problems, but it does have more of the Halloweentown flare and charm that was seriously lacking in the third movie. Having Aggie for more than an extended cameo might have been nice too, but I guess that they didn't want to risk revealing the big twist near the end. It's not the best movie in the series, but it was a better note to end it with than Halloweentown High and I enjoy watching it every year.
