Digimon Adventure Gets a High School Sequel

I liked the large size of the original cast. It meant everyone could have a favorite! I have a soft spot for Mimi. She's a bit of an airhead and can be a bit of a drama queen, but she's still a very good person who cares about others.

not necessarily. since they're older they might not be written the exact same way. so i'm expecting them to be much more multilayered and less prone to making idiotic decisions. as for the age thing, same difference.

The Digidestined are going to be the same ages as the protagonists of Persona 3 and Persona 4, and I could see Toei Animation taking some inspiration from that for the characterization of the Digidestined in the new anime. It depends on if this show is made for the same audience as Digimon Fusion if Saban Brands will choose to dub it in the same style.

Kaizawa Yukio was series director of Digimon Tamers. Konaka Chiaki was responsible for series organization (i.e. head writer). The series director is responsible for keeping the show running in a general and creative sense. The series organizer is just a freelance employee called in to help develop the story and keep scripts running smoothly. The 'show runner' is something much more applicable to our American live action works.

Ah, good to know. Thanks for the info! Wasn't being that literal, though. Regardless, unless Konaka's involved I doubt they'll do anything with Dragomon/the Dark Ocean.

Well to be fair the animation-quality in Digimon has never held a particularly high standard (possibly except with Xros Wars, and even there I seem to recall it dropping drastically during Hunters), so it's not like getting a poorly animated rushjob would be anything out of the ordinary...

I really would like some good quality animation though. Also I think, seeing as it is the anniversary and all, they'll most likely stick to Taichi as the lead.I can see the logic in them going back to the original cast for the anniversary celebration, that makes sense... Bringing in a completely new cast for the seventh time on the other hand? Not so much.

Okay, so... these blu-ray boxes. Apparently the TV series boxset is going to be 59,184 yen (roughly $575), so that'll put a pretty significant dent in my wallet. Apparently the movies boxset is going to be 27,000 yen (roughly $260), which... actually isn't too bad, honestly. I was truly, truly expecting these to be over $1,000 each. Isn't it sad that I'm happy about *only* having to pay $850?

Digimon is probably the only series I would do this for. Goodbye, wallet.

I'm excited about the new series, but it hasn't really "hit me" yet. I'll probably start getting hyped when we get a cast/staff/plot announcement. I share Jacob's fears about Toei balancing too many projects, but Digimon's animation has always been pretty abysmal (especially in Adventure 02), so it won't ruin the show for me. Hell, one might even argue that they're keeping up tradition!

The term "high school anime" gives me shivers, but hopefully they'll treat the characters properly. The Adventure protagonists are such good, layered characters. Please do them justice.

Can we just hope Saban doesn't dub this at all?

I can't fathom why people are asking for this. I wouldn't wish for any show to go to Saban. Why are people begging for music/songs/sound-effects/script replacements? It is possible for a Digimon show to be dubbed properly, guys. We don't have do lower ourselves to these standards. And a company like FUNimation would very likely try their hardest to assemble the old dub cast.

It's a shame this series will probably be directed by someone within the inner circle at Toei Animation. If they hired outside of their usual freelancers or in-house talent they could probably open up avenues to freelancers they usually do not have contact with.

Hopefully a few good key animators will be involved for some of the major battle scenes. Shida Naotoshi's cuts for Digimon Xros Wars Episode #64 was the highlight of the series. Hopefully something like that can be attempted.

I'd love to see Funimation dub this series. They would definitely try to get as many of the original voice actors back as possible and the dub would be much better as a result as well.

I've heard you can vote multiple times if you use different browsers. I assume this means a vote with Explorer, a vote with FireFox, a vote with Chrome, etc. When it comes to mobile, I've been able to vote 3 times with my iPhone with Safari, the Toonzone app, and the Twitter app.

Has anyone tried the typing mini-game on the site? Every 20 points = an extra rub!

As of now, the amount of rubs remaining should be around 850K, so 150K in one day. That means, of we assume that the initial hype around the announcement were to decrease and less people were to put effort into voting multiple times, we should still have this egg hatched in just over a week from now (if we're able to sustain at least 100K a day...)

Also I'm wondering if it'll be on FujiTV? If not they can't reuse the iconic Fuji TV building! It would be kind of a shame :/

This is unexpected news to say the least. I don't know what to expect. Will it follow the story that Adventure 02 laid out, or will it be its own continuity? Is it just about high school drama or will there be some big Digimon adventure? Will it get a dub? Will it even air on TV?

I look forward to hearing what will come out of this.

In an ideal world, anime dubbing wouldn't need to replace music, or dialogue, or sound effects.

Alas, music contracts are not cheap, the show is aimed at selling toys, and anime dubs for broadcast (or even Cable TV) have actually gotten worse when it comes to content. Doraemon wasn't the first time a dub was altered - the Digimon movie dubs got edited quite a bit to avoid references to Japan.

Let's face it, the only way we are going to see Digimon here in the states is probably Saban. And after 4Kids, we should be counting our lucky stars that the editing wasn't worse.

If anything, I'm expecting we might finally see the Mega forms for the rest of the main Adventure Digimon. I seem to recall that there was also a recent portable RPG game that adapted the story of the anime and featured them, with a few changes such as Gatomon going from Magnadramon like in the movie to Ophanimon, so it'd be cool to finally get to see those evolutions animated .

Man did that teaser stir up a lot of nostalgia in me... though the resurgence of Digimon in my life has already happened thanks to Digimon: Fusion, seeing the Adventure cast again should be pretty great .

Only downside is Toei's animation budget, but that isn't anything new .

I'm curious to see how the plot will incorporate Adventure 02 and if we'll get a Leomon death this season, especially since there's already been one in this continuity .

The entirety of the financing does not come from Toei Animation alone. The very last credit of the opening is for the production committee, the members who come together to fund and produce the cartoon. Toei Animation usually shares this credit with the TV network. For Digimon Xros Wars the Production Committee was TV Asahi and Toei Animation. Bandai seems to have some pull, so they might contribute money as well without taking credit in the Opening.

The problem with Toei Animation is more so the amount of content they produce. When this series is ready to begin full production it will be in the midst of Toei Animation being at the tail-end of work on the 2015 Dragon Ball Z film, six weekly TV series, the bi-weekly Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, commercials, TV specials, video game cuts scenes, and more. Toei also has World Trigger in production, meaning more staff shifting and scheduling issues that will pile up. This is to say nothing of their sub-contracting work for other studios' cartoons, either. TAP does a lot of in-betweening and second key animation for other studios, which inevitably has an effect on who is available to work on Toei cartoons, too. This is to say nothing of special projects in the work with foreign countries, either. Or the 100+ minute One Piece television specials that Toei usually does one or two a year of.

Unless production begins right this minute this Digimon series is going to face a challenge none of its predecessors did: the explosively rising popularity of cartoons.
