Do You Believe in the Moon Landing?

On one level I understand, and to some extent agree with, what you're saying, DB; but at the same time, I have to say in all honesty that a response like your last post, in this thread, strikes me a little like the story of the woman pouring expensive perfume on Jesus' feet and wiping them with her hair, only to have Judas offer up the criticism that the perfume could have been sold and the money spent to feed the poor (the same Judas who was, by the way, dipping into the group's funds on the sly himself): The subject of the thread is the Moon landing as an achievement -- that's its simple focus and scope; and, no offense, but it's a bit disingenuous to offer up the completely off-topic objection that society could focus its resources better anyway. There may be (and probably is) some element of truth to that --- but wouldn't it be maybe a little silly to hijack a thread like this by turning the discussion in that direction?

But let me say again, I truly mean no offense, DB --- I hope you understand that there's no poster here I respect more than you. :)

If you ask me, I think that astronauts are crazy to trust that they'll make it into space and back in one piece. I was only like 5 years old when the space shuttle "whatever it was called" exploded back in 86 or whatever year that was. Look at how the plane that crashed in the river in New York. How crazy are we that we trust this technology???

You can't make progress without taking some risks, though. I'm sure every astronaut knows there's a chance something could happen. Personally, I admire them for their bravery and have had a fascination with the whole space program since I was a kid. :)

Of course the moon landing was real. In fact, my astronomy professor worked for NASA in the space race days.

Frankly, I'm an aviation nut. To me, saying the moon landing never happened is the same as saying man can't fly. Having seen the progression of speed and altitude, and understanding radiation threats. There is no reason the moon landing couldn't happen. Having also seen the actual equipment from early pressure suits to a Saturn V booster, spread through at least six museums from Ohio to the Cape, that would be a ridiculously expensive hoax for any reason.

Well, if it is a coverup, its only staying within the goverment, seeing how NASA is goverment owned. Plus, when armstrong came back, they had one parade and that was it. He never did anything after that, and now he recently made a book about the landing 40 some years later.

Think about it, if you went to the freaking moon, yout have alot to say being the first one there, wouldnt you take every publicity till you die seeing how your the first person on the moon, thats alot of bragging rights right there.

Plus, with the space race and all, you can be number one to the world by reaching the moon first. During that time, it was nothing but an ego trip between 2 countries, with the arms race and all. If you couldnt make it to the moon, then do one heck of a play to convince the entire world that you did.

Well, thats my view on it...

:o Wow Bony...I'm touched! That's quite a thing for you to say, and I appreciate it.

I wasn't intending to hijack the thread, I assure you (y'all?) and kind of realized my comments didn't quite add up as I was writing them. It's a huge accomplishment for man to travel in space, no question. This thread isn't about whether or not we should be travelling in space, so yes...I was veering a bit. I'm a little sleepy.

I guess I just wanted to say that it's not a big deal for me either way if it turns out not to have really happened. I was surprised to find myself thinking that, so I thought I'd share. I'll leave it at that.

Although, now that I think about it...did Cher name herself "Cher" because it sounded like the word "Share"? And is it a stock-market reference? A plea for more fair human interactions? Does Cher really exist, or was she just filmed in a studio?

*watches the respect he's earned as it flushes down the toilet*

Your view on this is, its fishy that Neil Armstrong wasnt an attention grabbing whore about being the first man on the moon? Really?

Wow........uh that one parade lasted 45 days and uh where in the world did you get the idea that he did nothing after that? Damn bro, your talking about Neil freaking Armstrong, goggle him if you actually believe he did nothing after the moon landing.

Challenger. Columbia in 2003. And various unmanned vehicles that went awry.

Well, hes probably not the type with a huge ego. Yea, its bragging rights for sure, but some people do something great and let others brag for him.

Mmm, good point, a 45 day parade is big enough...

The only reason anyone thinks it's a conspiracy is because the original live news coverage had simulated footage, since they had no way of getting anything live besides the audio.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_sWmD6NvMY

From the above coverage, you can see why some people thought it was faked. Of course it really happened, it was just that they didn't show the footage we're all familiar with during the initial coverage.

Of course I don't believe in the moon landing. The moon can't land. It's impossible.

Anyway, I hope we do end up going back soon, and making it all the way to Mars within our lifetime. The Apollo missions ended before I was born, so I've always wondered what it feels like to witness an event like landing a man on the moon live as it happens.

I never understand why there some people keep bringing that up. I mean if it was fake, wouldn't the Soviets made a big deal about it? As far as I know, the Soviets didn't say anything about the this being fake.

Yup I believe it, plus the Mythbusters proved that it was real and thats good enough for me. I think all the conspiracy theorists out there just want attention so they just come up with those dumb ideas and see how many people will actually believe them. I think it would be great if we landed on the moon again, sure its an expensive operation but then again there would be a whole new generation seeing what happened back in 1969. That would be so awesome to see.

If we faked the first moon landing, why did we go to the moon all those other times and fake all those landings as well?

We had to use that sound stage a certain number of times to make it worth the money we put into it!

Nah, I kid. I do believe in the moon landing. ;)

I believe in the moon landing. I actually wasn't aware of anyone thinking it was fake. Since none of the theories for it being fake have been proven, not to mention how I don't see the point in faking it, I believe that it did happen.

Well, other than the people that don't believe in the moon landing, there's also people that think the earth is flat.

i am positive that the moon landing is real. all the theories that say it was faked really make no sense.

Yes:

A. Preety much would have been long decried by legitimate scientists a long time ago. Yet, nothing from the a significant scientific authority.

B. The Mythbusters answered the issues of the myths preety accurately.

C. To even try to make a fake moon landing, it would take as many resources AS GETTING TO THE MOON! Not only would they have to fake the Moon landing part, but also get the Soviets, and pretty much every darn nation capable of detecting radio signals, to say they detected the transmissions of Apollo missions. Not to mention have a capable rocket, deal with the Congressional oversight, pay off the thousands of workers and astronauts to shut up, build legitimate equipment, and if the Soviets had decided to go to the moon, would have to deal with them from discovering the truth.

With all the problems that would result in faking a Moon Landing, going to the moon would be far less complex and CHEAPER!
