"This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the “Dragon Quest” line of video games, and it’s quickly shaping up to be one of the best years to be a Dragon Quest fan! The year kicked off on January 1st with an announcement on “X” (formerly Twitter) that Square Enix is going to be making various annoucements over the course of the year, with it all hopefully building up to the release of the next mainline entry in the series: “Dragon Quest VII: The Flames of Fate” (first revealed in 2021 for the franchise’s 35th anniversary, but we’ve heard nothing since).
It looks as if we didn’t have to wait long for the announcements! First up, this week saw the release of a demo for the upcoming “Dragon Quest VII Reimagined”. Originally released on North America in November 2001, Dragon Quest VII was one of the last major releases for the original PlayStation (as the PlayStation 2 has premiered a year prior in 2000). The game remains one of the most celebrated in the franchise, with many fans citing it for it’s large open world and for having what they view as the best story.
The game was previously remade for the Nintendo 3DS in 2013, but this newest version has been completely redone, with new “hand-crafted” 3D graphics. This is a notable departure from the “HD-2D” line of games that publisher Square Enix has made popular in recent years (like “Octopath Traveler” and the recent “Dragon Quest I – III” remakes). The “Reimagined” version is also the first to have full voice acting for the main characters."
