Chapter 14
“Did you find 33569?” General Schrager asked as he stared at the video link up with his tracing team.
“Sir, we’ve been tracking her, but her movements have been erratic. She just disappeared about two weeks ago, but now we seem to be getting some signals that she might be in Gotham City.”
“Watch yourself Captain.” General Schrager growled as his eyes narrowed. “That’s Batman’s city. His partner Nightwing is the one that helped destroy our main operation building in Metropolis. Thankfully we had the backup building to transfer everything to.”
“I’ll be careful sir.”
“Don’t try to approach 33569 at night when Batman is prowling. Attack during the day. If Batman appears, or any of his partners, shoot to kill both 33569 and whatever Batfreak is attacking. Understood?”
“Acknowledged sir. It will be taken care of.”

Luke’s eyes narrowed as he finished listened to the recording and then he quickly turned it off, pulling off his headphones and setting them back inside his desk. With a sigh he lifted his phone, dialing in his home number.
“McNeely residence.” Sharon’s voice answered.
“Hi honey, it’s me. I’m not going to make it home tonight and possibly not tomorrow night either. I just found out about an out of control experiment that I have to take care of.”
“Be careful Luke. Come back in one piece.” Sharon responded softly.
“I will Sharon. Love you.”
“I love you to.” Sharon answered before they both hung up the phones.
Luke stood up, striding over to stare out the window of his office one more. “If I were a young girl, about sixteen, where would I go to hide? Where could I blend in?”

“Figuring out the layout of the school OK so far?” Tim Drake asked with a smile as he glanced over at the new girl who was walking with him.
Her bright yellow tresses bounced up and down as she gave a quick nod, her smile lighting up the room. “So far I’m doing fine Tim. My memory isn’t that bad.”
“I never said it was Miss Amanda.” Tim replied, continuing to grin. “Now I think it’s probably about time for me to turn you back over to the principle.”
Amanda sighed, rolling her blue eyes quickly. “Great… I have to listen to that old fart lecture me for another hour or two. My idea of fun.”
Tim snickered behind his hand as they continued walking down the hall. Then he raised an eyebrow as they made their turn into the hallway leading to the principles office. “I wonder what they want.” He muttered as he looked ahead at the five people in suits that were all talking with the principle. Beside him, Amanda suddenly froze staring ahead with eyes open in fright.
“Amanda Pike? She’s right there behind you.”
The five men turned quickly and then took off running towards her. “Amanda!” One of them yelled.
“No!” Amanda screamed, dropping her books as she turned to run the other way. “I’m not going back!”
“Oh boy.” Tim muttered as he quickly turned, racing behind Amanda. “Care to tell me what in the world is going on here?” He asked in between breaths as he and Amanda busted through the door leading outside the school.
“To long to explain… don’t come with me Tim. Only get you in trouble.” Amanda gasped out as the two continued running; suddenly they skidded to a stop as another three men suddenly appeared in front of them, pointing semi-automatic pistols towards them. “Don’t move 33569 unless you want your friend hurt.”
Tim raised his eyebrow as they called Amanda by a number instead of her name. “What in the world have I gotten myself into?”
“Both of you!” A commanding voice suddenly said behind them. “On the ground now!”
“Uh, don’t we get to see a lawyer first?” Tim asked lamely as he glanced back at the five men who now stood behind them with their own weapons drawn.
“You’re not going to be seeing much of anyone anytime soon. We have to find out what she’s told you first.” The man growled as he stared into Tim’s eyes.
Suddenly Amanda turned, shoving Tim to the ground. “No!” She screamed as her hands suddenly erupted in flames, sending geysers launching towards the men that were pointing weapons at her.
The men all dove away from the flames, rolling behind anything they could use as cover. “Code red! I repeat, code red!” One of the men called over his radio. “Snipers, open fire!”
“Go to h*ll!” A cold voice responded over the radio. “Your snipers already have.”
The man stared at his radio in unbelief then spun around, his eyes widening in shock.

Luke swung down, reaching out with his one strong arm and pulling both Tim and Amanda into it as he swung upwards, then released his grappling line, launching out another one immediately. Within his mask he smiled coldly, happy that he had been able to thwart the government this time. In a matter of seconds they were beyond the range of the men’s pistols and soon they disappeared into the forest of skyscrapers.
Luke continued swinging for several more minutes before finally landing on top of the Gotham Clock Tower.
Amanda quickly lept away, staring at the man dressed all in black. “Who are you?” She asked, her eyes showing a little fear.
“He’s Eagle.” Tim said quickly. When Luke cocked his head to glance at him, he grinned. “Dick Grayson told me about you.”
“So this must be robin then.” Luke thought with a grin and then he turned his gaze back to Amanda. “I do go by the name Eagle, but more important I’m someone who was able to escape from the same people you escaped from.”
“You’re…. You’re 72170.” She whispered in awe as she stared at him.
“That was the number they gave me, yes.” Luke responded quietly. “But I’m now a name… not a number.”
***
“Where do I go now?” Amanda asked as she quietly stared out over Gotham’s night-lights from the top of the building where McNeely & McNeely Inc. was currently located.
“I would offer to let you stay with me, but I’m not sure how my guardian would feel about that.” Tim offered lamely.
“I can’t stay in Gotham Tim.” Amanda said with a sad smile. “They found me to easy.”
“You can stay with my wife.” Luke suddenly said as he peeled off his mask to reveal a smile on his face. “She’d be happy to have you stay with us.”
“No. I have to try to find my own purpose in life.” Amanda said quietly. “Thanks for the offer just the same.”
Luke nodded quickly, the pointed to the door that led to the stairs. “Go on inside. Go to the ground level. There you’ll find a driver by the name of Charlie. He’ll take you wherever you need to go and he’ll make sure you have plenty of money to get started.”
Amanda nodded and then walked over, hugging Tim quickly. “Thanks for all your help Tim. Take care.” A moment later, she was gone.
“Tell Batman what happened.” Luke said quietly after Amanda had left. “I’ll be over to the Wayne residence to see you both later in the week. I used to think that just saving everyone I could was enough but when I see what they try to do to a kid like that, I know I have to keep them from ever hurting anyone again.”
“I’ll tell him.” Tim replied quietly.
“Can you get home alright?”
Tim nodded as he opened his backpack to reveal a pile of red fabric within. “I think I can figure a way to swing it.”
“Take care, Robin.” Luke said as he turned and strode inside. “Oh… and just in case you were wondering, Charlie is going to keep an eye on her. If there are any problems, I’ll be notified and I’ll let you know right away.
“Thanks Eagle.” Tim said as he pulled on his mask.
