I've heard of the phrase "garbage anime" to refer to low quality anime, but this an anime literally themed around garbage and garbage monsters. It's "trashy" in the sense of being super edgy. Our protagonist is a guy who likes do illegal dumpster dives in a world where soldier dudes shoot dumpster divers on site for some reason. He has a cute relationship with what appears to be his potential love interest, but then the corrupt government frames him for murder and throws him into the pit. He swears his vengeance against everybody, including his love interest for believing the frame-up. Yes, this series seems hilariously edgelord. It's a Bones production and the art looks nice, even if the premiere didn't have any fight scenes. I think episode one implies we are in for a guilty pleasure edgefest, but lets see how the rest of the show turns out.

f people put so much care into objects, enough to give them souls, what does it say if you can so easily throw out these objects as trash, as if they didn't have any value? And then do the same to human life?

The people of The Sphere definitely take their pristine, white, cleanliness and purity seriously...enough to want nothing to do with any trash or so quick to dismiss anything less than perfect as trash. They take it seriously enough that a "trash raider" who grabs trash warrants basically death by firing squad, which just feels a tad excessive. But that's the kind of life we find our protagonist Rudo (Aoi Ichikawa!) in.

Rudo is part of the Tribesfolk, descendants of criminals living in the slums and looked down on by the rich Spherites. Rudo most of all is looked down upon because of his serial killer father who went on a mass murder spree and ruined the reputation of the Tribesfolk. Now all Rudo can do is go through trash to find what is salvageable and prove that, much like Rudo, there' still value in stuff that others dismiss as trash.

But at least it's not all bad. There's Chiwa, one of the only people who doesn't judge Rudo and cares about him, and she's so cute and sweet it's no surprise Rudo has a crush on her. And while his biological father permanently scarred his hands, his adoptive father Regto (Toshiyuki Morikawa!) was there for him and provides for him, including the gloves on his hands. And in true father fashion of course teases him about his relationship with Chiwa.

The public executions of The Pit are pretty intense, dropping people down to the bottom of whatever is below them...the same thing happened to Rudo's bio dad. But who cares about that! Chiwa accidentally confessed to him! This is the best day ever! Nothing can ruin this day!

Oh no! Regto's been murdered! By some weirdo in a mask! Next thing you know the weirdo is knocking Rudo out, stealing a book, and leaving Rudo to take the rap for Regto's murder. Right after Regto passed his last will that Rudo fix this messed up world somehow. Jeez.

It's one thing for everyone in the slums or the Apostles to immediately pronounce Rudo guilty and slate him for execution...it's another thing for Chiwa to so immediately believe that he did it and turn her back on him and the plushie he fixed for her. Like, come on Chiwa! I thought you were better than this!

Betrayed by society, betrayed by the girl he loved, betrayed by everything BUT the father he just lost...all Rudo can do is feel such strong feelings of vengeance, especially when the greatest indignity is the real killer being in the audience watching as he plummets down to the Pit. Rudo will destroy ALL of them!

Oh, so the Pit isn't just some bottomless emptiness...Rudo saw SOMETHING while he was falling, and lands in a pile of trash. Complete with TRASH MONSTERS. Yeah, it's that kind of series!

Episode 2
"Imbued" July 12, 2025

Rudo witnessed so many condemned by the Sphere get dropped down to the Pit like trash...never to be considered again, never to be thought of again...no one cared where they ended up. Only now HE was the one dropped down and he can see for himself a world of toxic air and monsters made of trash that are out to kill him.

The OP is very on-brand for this show with so much creative visuals using trash, Rudo's body being filled with trash, and stone versions of our main cast getting broken and reformed into themselves.

Rudo can barely breathe, Trash Beasts are out to get him, is there really any reason for him to keep going? Well, his thirst for revenge and his memory of Regto's death is more than enough motivation to keep going and fight for his life. Even if it means making use of all the trash around him as weapons, with his gloves having some kind of effect in the process, and when Rudo puts his mind to it he's pretty capable in a fight even with improvised weapons!

Only Rudo isn't alone in this trash world, as he comes across someone in a distinctive gas mask who offers their own up to him. Meet Enjin (Katsuyuki Konishi fulfilling his seasonal quota as a Battle Shonen mentor!), a Cleaner who was just trying to avoid any trouble but Rudo's inability to shut his mouth because of how confused he is forces Enjin to yell and have to deal with all the legion of Trash Beasts. Creatures that can only be defeated by special weapons, like his transforming umbrella, that he uses to solo all of them! Nice!

Welcome to The Ground, Rudo! Where you're getting dragged along on a chain by Enjin and forced to reckon with the consequences of the Sphere dropping trash onto the REAL world below. Trash that has corrupted the air and piled up so much the place is barely livable, not to mention the Trash Beasts that come to life because of it. As if the Sphere couldn't be more inconsiderate, their floating continent is never in the same place, as if to make it even harder for Rudo to get back and get his revenge!

But Rudo's not the only person with a grudge...the people of the Ground LOATHE the Sphereites for what they've done, and scavengers make use of Sphere corpses and, if they're lucky, an actually alive Sphereite that they can sell, torture, and devour at their leisure to get payback.

Rudo is tired of labels, of being treated like Trash by the Sphere or being written off as a Sphereite by the Ground, all he cares about is getting his revenge and making use of everything that others dismiss as trash. Food waste? Still edible. Human skin? Also edible. Objects lying around? Just like Regto taught him, they might actually have spirits within them, and with the power of Rudo's gloves he's able to use this "Giver" ability to transform these objects into weapons! And uniquely he seems to be the only one who can do multiple!

Did you think Enjin really sold Rudo out? This was just a test to see how Rudo's powers work! And his audition to join The Cleaners! Y'know, the part of the Battle Shonen where the MC gets recruited into the main organization? Except...Rudo says no!

The ED is very creative with the cube being dropped by the Sphere (?) before morphing into trash...and popping out Rudo...who I guess still sees value in the cube and floats it back up? How very artsy and symbolic!

So we are introduced to one member of the garbage monster killing squad and he has umbrella powers. He's Mary Poppins y'all. Okay, it's kind of hard to make umbrellas a macho weapon, but he kinda got me thinking maybe it's possible for such a weapon to be manly. I think eventually we'll get an explanation of how the shonen powers work in this show. Main character obviously has powers but doesn't know how they work. Fun episode of shonen action.

Episode 3
July 27, 2025

Enjin might not be Rudo's favorite person right now, but he needs to rely on whoever he can to survive on the Ground! Where you shouldn't misgender doctors voiced by Ryusei Nakao or expect to get a free pass to anything, especially when you're a Sphereite. But Rudo can show his thanks and gratefulness when he needs to.

The Ground! Where people have actually managed to build their own community and cities, where the women are just as beautiful, and where the emotional existence known as "Anima" cultivate and create Trash Beasts who can only be defeated by vital instrument users known as Givers! Hence Enjin's group: The Cleaners.

Does Enjin know how to get Rudo back to the Sphere? Of course not! But the Cleaners' boss might, so it's probably in Rudo's best interest to join up with them one way or another. Besides, Enjin already gave Rudo his first paycheck, because he's just that considerate a guy! Granted, it's pay he made from the clothes off Rudo's back, but you can't say Enjin at least didn't give it back to Rudo.

Cats in the Ground are just as mischeivous as they are anywhere else, stealing Rudo's money, but you shouldn't steal from people in general...otherwise you'll get on the bad side of people like Zanka (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka!) who doesn't appreciate ANYONE handling his Lovely Assistaff but him.

Thank goodness Regto taught Rudo the power of empathy! It actually CAN diffuse a tense situation without a fight! And Zanka makes a complete 180 and becomes Rudo's buddy instantly after a proper apology! It looks like they'll have a nice, beneficial, mentor/protege relationship! All Rudo has to do is seal the deal with a nice, bright, smile!

Welp, never mind, Rudo can't smile to save his life and Zanka doesn't like to be disrespected in any form. Next thing you know Zanka's insulting Rudo's mission to avege Regto and we get a Giver vs Giver fight.

Rudo may have the ability to turn anything into a vital instrument, but Zanka's mediocrity means he's better trained and skilled, and that gives Rudo a heavy disadvantage...but it's to Rudo's own advantage that he grabbed a plunger with poop on it, because Zanka REALLY can't handle that. Next thing you know they're engaging in a chase sequence, including a Scooby-Doo door moment, and Rudo is winning with the power of poop.

Zanka got poop on him, Rudo won thanks to poop, and Enjin is having the time of his life. For all that talk about Rudo being a Sphereite, Zanka turns out to be the Ground equivalent of a rich kid who frankly needs to be knocked down a peg, though praise from Enjin can perk him up immediately.

Rudo met Enjin, his savior and intro to the Cleaners, he's met Enjin his trainer/instructor, and now in the back of Enjin's van he's met...Riyo (Yumiri Hanamori!)! A cute and attractive girl who immediately gets in his face and plays with his hair! Lucky Rudo.

After a dark and edgy first two episodes, we get literal toilet humor this episode. Okay, admittedly toilet humor is a battle shonen staple, even in edgy titles and my inner teen boy finds it funny.

Episode 4 "Cleaner HQ"
August 3, 2025
After being introduced to Cleaner HQ, Rudo follows Riyo on a job to learn the business.

Welcome to Cleaner HQ, Rudo! I love how Rudo probably didn't even pay attention to the ride at all because he was too frozen solid by Riyo messing with his hair. And that might not be the last time! I wish Riyo wanted to mess with me!

When you join the Cleaners, you have to meet with Semiu (Mie Sonozaki)! A busty beauty receptionist, who peruses through magazines of half-naked girls and also peruses anyone who comes by with her glasses vital instrument to gauge their potential! And of course Rudo, being the MC, has more going on than she or anyone else at the Cleaners expects or understands.

Meet your fellow Cleaners and all their distinctive character designs, Rudo! Or don't, probably getting thrown into a large group of people you've never met, even if they are your future co-workers, would be bad for a kid who barely knows how to talk to people in general.

Enjin talks up the Cleaners' boss and how they don't even know what his vital instrument/power is yet the group is still absolutely loyal to him...and the dude isn't even there! Well, I guess we need to delay the main plot just a tad, all the better if it means Rudo is free to go on a mission with Riyo!

Rudo is lucky Enjin stumbled into him in a pollution zone where Trash Beasts come from, and where Cleaners have to fend off Trash Beasts. Though was Enjin really just there by chance?

Meet the supporters, the people who while not having vital instruments are just as vital to the Cleaners' operations and battles! Just...watch it if you shake Gris' (Satoshi Hino!) hand or you might get crushed.

Riyo is such a vibe! She's so chill, laidback, and calm even when facing a herd of Trash Beast rams. And even when a Mid-Boss level Trash Beast shows up, she just gets hyped for a fight! Rudo can learn a lot from her!

Riyo's vital instrument is The Ripper, a pair of scissors she wields via her feet to slice and dice through Trash Beasts and have the best time possible. And even without vital instruments, the support team also contribute to fights by setting up lower level Trash Beasts for the Cleaners to clean up and also cataloging enemies and mopping up the defeated Trash Beasts! They run a tight and efficient operation! Take notes, Rudo!

I guess Rudo can't expect to be able to transform everything he touches into a convenient weapon, though going out of his way to save one of the supporters sells him better to Riyo.

Lucky Trash Beast getting a haircut from Riyo! I want Riyo to cut my hair! Granted, she might kill me too! But what a spectacular finisher.

Rudo's questioning if he's living up to being the MC of the show when he really hasn't done much, but he's not alone and it's a team effort, and so long as he survives he can reach closer to his goals.

Glad Rudo showed up just in time for the Cleaners to be dealing with Trash Beasts powered by vital instruments. I'm sure that won't become a frequent problem. Just like the guy who was trying to traffic Rudo getting caught by some dude in dreadlocks will probably not effect Rudo at all!

This episode introduced us to the Riyo and we have another anime character who uses a giant pair of scissors as weapons just like the two "kill" shows (Kill La Kill, Akame Ga Kill). Only this time, she uses her feat. That's a little quirky.

Even did a Rider Kick with them :p.

Episode 5 "Raiders"
August 10, 2025
The cleaners go on a job to save another Spherite who survived the fall. Rudo tags along to learn more.

It's finally time for Rudo's welcome party and the Cleaners will take any excuse to party and treat themselves! Too bad Rudo's too depressed and socially-awkward to enjoy it, but he should just take a page from Riyo's book! If there's a problem you don't understand...just acknowledge it's above your paygrade and just have fun!

Gris is a really good guy. He sees Rudo having so much self-doubt and anxiety, and he helps Rudo through it by making him acknowledge that he's an open-minded enough guy to never once judge the Supporters and even save one of them without hesitation. And maybe he doesn't need to keep overthinking everything and should just go back-to-basics and rediscover who he really is! Especially when he's found a community willing to welcome him in the Cleaners.

Find something you're as dedicated to as Gob is to grafitti art.

RIP guy who tried to human traffic Rudo. No one will miss you, but that's a gory way to go out.

Honestly I'd probably call the Cleaners' number just to hear Semiu's voice.

Is it safe to keep bringing Rudo out into the field? Though if there's another Sphereite on the Ground, it makes sense to bring him. Plus, you just name drop Enjin and Zanka will basically do anything!

I knew there something shifty about that merchant "lady," especially how convenient it would be for a Trash Beast to just kidnap someone. Turns out it was a trap! Exclusively for Rudo! Turns out the Cleaners aren't the only organization of Givers out there, they just happen to be the nicest one. The Raiders are the ones you need to watch out for!

The Supporters are out of their depth and Rudo is untrained, so it's up to Zanka to solo this pair of Raiders. The woman who controls mud with her shovel, and her male partner who hides within said mud so he can beat the snot out of Zanka. They make for an effective tag-team.

Unfortunately for them, even if their teamwork is stellar, Zanka is way above them in terms of mastering his Vital Instrument, and his Lovely Assistaff is more than capable of figuring out the location of mr. punch so Zanka can knock him and his female partner out in two seconds! No sweat!

Okay...maybe Mr. Dreadlocks voiced by Yuki Shin might be more of a problem.

Okay four episodes in and we have the trash monsters get eclipsed by human villains. It's inevitable in shonen, but four episodes is pretty quick. Hollows lasted about 20 episodes in Bleach before losing relevancy.

I mean, considering it's so early, it's too early to say one way or another in my opinion. They could mix it up between the Raiders and the Trash Beasts.

I don't think they'd set up Trash Beasts evolving from Vital Instruments if they weren't going to do something with it.

Glad I got you to watch Stranger Things.

If I may recommend more media for you to check out, here's a starter:

You've mentioned that haven't read the original TMNT comics from Mirage Studios. Well, this video by YouTuber "Soundout12" gives a decent roadmap for where to start:

dmxx116 really likes to wish for people not to return back to so and so because their films didn't do so well. I don't agree with everything he says, though I agree on that Jared Leto shouldn't play Skeletor.
I'm sorry but I disagree with what GRPHX said about the past five films with Daniel Craig as James Bond as well as the choice of Denis Villeneuve as director and Steven Knight as writer in the next film because I really doubt Villeneuve's take will be like the Craig films at all and besides, all of the stuff he mentioned happened before the Craig films such as Licence to Kill.

Hi, welcome to Toonzone

There's something about seeing kids cry after they mess up big time that really gets to me. One can definitely feel bad for Layla.
