Oldest show to ever air on CN?

Theatrical shorts aside, what's the oldest show to air on CN? I'm thinking it would have to be either Bullwinkle or Gigantor.

Hanna-Barbera started making works for television in 1957, so I guess that counts.

I would be thinking either Popeye or Bugs Bunny?!

Does anyone have confirmation that The Ruff and Reddy Show ever aired on CN? Of course, even if it didn’t, then surely there’s The Huckleberry Hound Show (or should I say, the contents thereof), which started a year later- 1958.

I take it CN has never aired pre-HB shows, such as Crusader Rabbit, Winky Dink and You, The Gerald McBoing-Boing Show (the original, not the 2005 one) or Colonel Bleep (which apparently last aired in 1971).

I doubt they even had the rights to those pre-HB shows.

That’s more or less my point. I figure they must not have acquired them if they didn’t bother airing them.

Basically, 1957 or 1958 is the earliest for CN TV-wise, judging by that.

Oh. I thought the thread title was asking "what was the first broadcast on Cartoon Network (in 1992)", or maybe "what was the first show to be created for Cartoon Network" (in the early 90's).

But yeah, what you're talking about is something from the late 50's, I'm sure.

EDIT: Wikipedia does say "Ruff and Reddy" did air on Cartoon Network, for what it's worth...

I don’t have any evidence other than my flapping gums, but I think Ruff and Reddy was on late at night before AS came along. I recall my dad making a joke about how all the “good shows” came on at 3 in the morning.

Looks like we have to look for old CN schedules again (there's also the possibility that some of the RNR segments may have aired in between shows, even if the show proper never aired on CN). Come to think of it, did Felix the Cat ever air on CN?

Do we have any sources besides Wikipedia for Ruff and Reddy airing on CN?

I checked YouTube, but there didn’t appear to be any reliable videos (closest I found was...a fake).

Yes, we do.

This 2002 schedule shows Ruff and Reddy coming in at 1 am, in what it looks like a surprisingly nostalgia-filled post-midnight schedule for that era.

From what I've seen of other schedules from 2002, that's the way it was: If you wanted to watch the classic Hanna Barbera stuff, you waited till after midnight.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but according to this schedule, the first show to air would probably be Flintstones.

On a related note, Mike Lazzo was familiar with Colonel Bleep back then, as noted here. I suppose they could have picked up the show, but opted not to do so. I'm guessing it was because there weren't very many available episodes at the time, and by the time there were more, it was too little too late.

What about The Morning Crew (or are we not counting compilation shows)?

I'm not sure why the distinction between "show" and "short" matters, but in it's original incarnation Cartoon Network aired cartoons from the 30s-90s somewhere on the schedule.

The only thing I can say for certain they ever aired older than that was during the one marathon they showed Gertie the Dinosaur.

And Yes Ruff and Reddy aired on Cartoon Network. Rocky and Bullwinkle is another 50s show that did. Some of the 50s Gumby episodes with the 80s re dubs also aired. Woody Woodpecker's show also was briefly apart of the morning lineup.

EDIT: I was also reminded one of the preserve toon history bumps featured Bobby Bumps in it, but i'm not sure if he ever aired any of his public domain cartoons on Late Night Black and White. CN also had a bump that parodied Koko the Clown (Whizzo the very first cartoon) but I don't think CN ever aired an Out of the Inkwell short either.

From the original post: "Theatrical shorts aside, what's the oldest show to air on CN?" I believe that's referring to television animation in particular.

As far as pre-1930s animation goes, it appears Bosko, the Talk-Ink Kid, made in 1929, was shown on an episode of Toonheads in 2000.

I remember Rocky and Bullwinkle airing on CN, just didn't know for a fact about Ruff and Reddy, though there seems to be sufficient evidence (for now, at least) that that was the case. And since there's no evidence that any earlier TV cartoons have ever aired on CN, Ruff and Reddy seem to be the answer here.

Okay hear me out, Isn't it kind of crazy how CN never thought about doing a Kids Next Door x Teen Titans OG crossover back in the 2000s? There's five members of Sector V, five titans, and they both have super cool HQs. I'm telling you guys, a TT and KND crossover would've been so epic!
Watched the live-action "Moana" today and felt nothing that special compared to the original 2016 film. In fact, I don't remember much from the first animated film, but I think they barely changed anything in the 2026 version
@Sam the Cartoonist is right, I've registered on this site two times and I've enjoyed it! :) I'd posted this back in 2016, over ten years ago!
