Otakon...Maybe?

I'm sure no matter what you bring to the table, I out shoujo fanboy you. Besides, -10 points for calling Azumanga shoujo. Though it appeals to a female audience, it was originally intended for males as it ran in Dengeki Daioh, a manga magazine targeted to the Akiba moe-centric otaku and whose tag line is "a magazine full of girls for boys." It's tantamount to calling Tsukihime or Futakoi shoujo.
[/a silly post]

The Tsukihime anime had it moment's. Shoujo can be horribly bloody too...Just look at X. Admitedly that's only kinda a shoujo show though. Does CLAMP actually make any purely shoujo shoujo anymore?

I'm afraid I'll have to miss the movie premire for some other stuff. I'll catch it in theatres.

Karl Olson said:
Nope, it's mostly girls (look at any anime con and half the attendence is girls these days anyway, so it only follows that there would plenty of girls who would be interested in the program.) In fact, they made this huge thing at the AX FUNigirl panel about how no guys were allowed, but then after my outstandingly nerdy admission in relation to question about "why guys don't dig shoujo?" and how I'm not sure why guys wouldn't be into shoujo cause I'm watching and reading shoujo stuff all the time, they said I was an honorary FUNigirl, and then a month later at the FUNi panel at Comic Con, the same rep was there and remembered me as "the honorary FUNigirl."

In fact, looks I've got a new title that should go by a new avatar.

Tis quite sad we don't have the laminating machine at Otakon. Karl will miss his chance to be FUNigirl'd.

Looks like we'll have to mail it to him. (need photographic evidence on the FUNi thread.)

Ah, Otakon, haven't been there in years. I had a streak of a few years constant attendance in the late 90's/early 2k, but I've fallen out of anime fandom really: somewhere along the line I stopped being a specific anime fan and moved more into overall animation.

Also, there's a good chance my ex-girlfriend will be there, ergo, I'll have to pass once again.

I can't believe they dropped the pricing tier system for admission: straight-up $60 at the door?! Ouch.

For those worried about Baltimore: its not nearly as bad as people think, especially if you aren't invovled in the drug trade. The area around the immediate convention center should be fine, but you should always go out with at least one other person at night (that's just decent city-etiquette). Also, NEVER give out money to begging poor people, others will see you do it, realize you have money, and get in your face; you also make yourself a target by announcing you have money to spare. Simply shake your head "no" and keep walking, don't stare at them and never break your walking pace.

So all, any word as to how long is Otakon set to stay in Baltimore? I've heard talk over the last year of them thinking of moving down to the new convention center in DC. While I can understand that business is business, it'd be a huge shame for the city, as Otakon has become one of the biggest cons/festivals in Baltimore all year.

Duke: have you tried Comics Kingdom, or Legends, for those figures you'd like to see?

According to the Otakon rep, it all hinges on how long they take to build the new Hilton Hotel, and apparently plans are underway to get the construction off the ground. The Otakon head said that by the time they move down to DC and make up the money getting established down there, the hotel will be finished, so it's not worth it.

o.O A comic book shop has Gundam/IGPX Model Kits? I thought Bandai stopped selling them except at Cons (where they're just imports)?

Sorry for the back-to-back post: an important addendum.

Here is a pretty recent interview with the Otakon con chair.

The attendance cap last year was 22k. This year, you've upped it to 25, along with procuring the First Mariner Arena. Do you think the con will sell out again? Will it ever outgrow Baltimore? Is it true that almost all of the hotels are sold out?

Yes, I think we'll sell out again. The current total may look low, but this time last year we
had just opened up pre-reg. Once we kick out some more guest announcements, we'll see things
pick up.

The 1st Mariner Arena gives our biggest event room to breath, allows us to satisfy the need
for more rooms that hold about a thousand people, and buys us back our 35mm room (which had
been used for simulcast of the Masquerade) for its primary purpose of showing films.

But we're also going to be using another surprise venue this year -- you'll hear more about
that soon.

Will we outgrow Baltimore? In some ways we already have, but there just aren't very many
options available to us that would actually work. Philly's set up all wrong for us. Half our
staff wouldn't make the trek to Pittsburgh. That leaves us with DC -- an option that's still
on the table. However there are a lot of challenges with DC, the most critical of which is
cost. Baltimore at this point is motivated to keep us, and they're putting their money where
their mouth is, so to speak. This year we've seen a noted increase in city support for the
event. And frankly, we know pretty much exactly how to use Baltimore's space, and we know
all the local players, from hotels to venues to vendors.

What of the coming expansions to the hotel and convention space in Baltimore?

They look very promising. Basically they're adding another ballroom's worth of space, which
would be a huge help to us. And 600 more hotel rooms, plus parking spaces? That's a big
plus. Unfortunately they're not slated to be done until 2008. With luck, they'll be ready
for us.

Regarding the First Mariner Arena and the cosplay being held there: are you excited about that? Can you give us any insight into the circumstances that led to this decision?

Mostly it was math. The masquerade is consistently our best attended event, drawing a full
ballroom (over 4,000 people) and overflow room (about 2,400 people) during our peak hours on
Saturday night. Because of the overflow, we lose 35mm during that time -- which is a real
shame because it's one of the things that Otakon does that sets us apart. So as we discussed
options, we thought about other venues we could tap -- we have more programming content than
we have space to put it!-- and at some meeting someone suggested putting main events there.

Right now, the only thing confirmed for the Arena is the Masquerade, though it's possible
that we may have other stuff there as well.

Masquerade isn't just the main time, it's the rehearsals as well. Which means that we don't
lose our biggest space for just the four hours of the show, but *also* for the rehearsal
time. Moving masquerade reclaimed the ballroom space for other stuff on saturday, AND gave
us back 35mm for 35mm stuff.

Also, moving 6000+ people out of the BCC on Saturday night does a lot to reduce the clogged
aisles during our busiest time, which is why we were able to up the cap.

Also, the article mentions that one of the local cleaning companies which the Convention center outsources work to, Armarak (my University, Towson, outsources clearning them, also) has changed their tune and is being helpful, also.

As a native, I'm glad to see Baltimore city getting on it's horse and being as cooperative and helpful as possible. The city really should strive to make Otakon as close to an institution here as it can be: let's associate something relatively cutting edge and positive with Baltimore for once.:anime:

Now, I might actually pop my head in to see what I've been missing.

That fits in with what Vowles said in his interview.

Also, I didn't know Bandai stopped selling kits outside of cons: when I WAS deep into fandom, gundam, and modelling, I recall that both Comics Kingdom and Legends carried model kits, hence my first inclination was to see if you had checked out those places.

While both are quality stores, neither are speciality model/anime shops, so factoring in that with what you said about Bandai's current selling habits, they probably don't have those kits. However, I'm sure they get in random imports of random stuff now and then (seriously); couldn't hurt to stop by if you're near one of them, or pick up the phone and call.

I alas, won't be at Otakon anyway (I am literally tapped out from all the con stuff - I'm not in a position to write the travel, food and hotel off as a business expense... yet. Someday.) Anyway, If you hit AnimeEvo or KumoriCon, then we can connect, otherwise, your next statement probably makes the most sense...

I would pay the postage even if I don't get a lanyard to with it, and the picture would probably circulate around a few different communities on the net, not just the FUNi thread (would it be rude to post that on the FUNigirl forum, or comedic?) Anyway, if you're serious, I'll PM you my address right now. Or I'll email it to you. Unless you still have my business card.

(Though I really would like a FUNigirl lanyard to wear at AnimeEvo, Penny Arcade Expo and Kumoricon. Might even end up on film since G4 and 1up.com will be back and I can probably flag them down for interviews like I did last year at PAX, and I know the 2 nerdcore hiphop documentaries will be shooting interviews with me at PAX too.)

Short of tearign down that state office building behind the BCC or trying to buy that church out again the City will do everythign in their power to retain Otakon. The Con will probabyl be good until the new Hilton opens, at which point we get a whole new ball room, display hall and mroe pannel space to play with. Assuming the hotel get built on time it'll be alright. I can easily see videogames moving to the hotel once it's up since they'll be able to run that space 24 hours a day, I think.

IMO DC isn't ready for Otakon at the DCCC. There aren't enough hotel rooms or services near the DCCC for Otakon to be sucessful there yet.

I heard that Otakon was to move (back?) to Pittsburg at some point. Which I would have no problem with since hey! I don't have to drive 4 hours south!

And yeah, even for Katsucon this past year, there really weren't many hotels around where the convention was being held (even tho it was being held in a hotel).

Pittsburgh? No way. They ruleld that out a long time ago. None of the staff would make the trek out there.

Katsu didn't have a problem since they have public transit in DC that runs 7 days a week . Bawlmer only has light rail during and the useless subway weekends and those don't do anyone going to the BCC much good.

Of course Baltimore's catering to Otakon's pleas, Otakon makes Baltimore very, VERY rich every year. No way the city is giving up one of their biggest moneymakers (especially with the O's sucking) without a fight. Hell, our ABC affiliate's been running yearly coverage on Otakon (starting in 2003 when they covered the TMR concert) and I believe Otakon even has street banners up on Pratt. Baltimore would have to be idiotic to just let Otakon go, and while they may lack common sense, they're not that stupid.

They stopped selling model kits in stores when SEED came along. Had the SEED toyline been actually successful, we might have gotten some more of the SEED kits in stores.

Eh, unless you're planning to stay past 11PM, the Light Rail works out well within the city on Friday & Saturday. Sunday it does suck though, since it doesn't start until 11AM.

Yea, I hate to double post, but I wanna make sure people notice this.

If you're cosplaying, signs = bad. Unless it's a part of the character (like Panda-Man in Ranma), signs are forbidden and carrying one around, especially if it's soliticing something (such as Pocky or money in exchange for hugs, glomps, or sex). If anyone's caught with a sign like that, they'll be thrown out.

Apparently Otakon got a LOT of complaints last year regarding how annoying the signs are. At least there won't be any more Yaoi Paddles this year...

I'm going, its looking like I can take train(s) from DC and get to BCC without too many problems.

No place to stay at all, but I'll either hit up some people I know that will be there (on the artist ally in fact) and lean against a wall if I have to, or find some hotel and sleep in a hall somewhere...its too bad its not like Katsu, where you can stay in the building all night since its held in a hotel.

Gonna wear this Gundam SEED shirt with the logo on the back and an outline of Strike on the front that I got a couple Katsus ago, its kinda a tradition now.

This'll be my first Otakon experience and I've only ever gone to Katsucon and one or two smaller conventions before that, so I'm expecting to be overwhelmed by it all. But I'll enjoy it.

Hopefully I can get Friday off and catch the Gundam panel, and that Lodoss War marathon...hoping that's the OAV

Are you taking the Metro? That'll put you at Camden Yards. From there, it's a 2-3 minute walk up the street, then a 30 second walk across the street to get to the BCC.

DC metro? You serious? Camden Yards stop is @ Baltimore....

Shows what I know. Now I feel stupid taking all that time to research MARC and light rail trains....

I thought MARC was the Metro...

That's what they always call it on WBAL. Sometimes they use MARC, sometimes Metro.

You can't take the train home. MARC shuts down that lien at 7 PM on friday and it won't open again til Monday morning. Do yourself a favor and drive up, or at least drive to BWI and park there. There is lightrail there. Of course, I'm assuming you have a hotel room.

Hey, the O's may not be the draw they used to be, but they are still a draw. The new Rams Head Live! has bene helping things down at that end to. They still have alot of work to do on that area though.

I've been calling him Panda-Man for about 7 years now. It's now a habit. He's Genma in human form, Panda-Man in panda form. :P

No, the MARC and Metro are two different things.

The MARC is a multi-state train; it is above ground, and runs primarily from Union Station in DC to Penn Station in Baltimore (though it does go further north).

The Metro = subway; in this case, Baltimore's subway line that runs from Owings Mills to Johns Hopkins Hospital.

If you're coming up from DC, simply catch the MARC to Penn Station (shouldn't be more then 12 bucks max one way). When you hit Penn, walk out to Charles street to catch the 3 going downtown (ask anyone for directions, they'll know). The 3 will drop you off a few steps away from the convention center on Pratt street.

Note: for some wack reason, the MARC does not run on weekends; therefore there is no Sat./Sun. MARC service to/from DC.
