Sonic Boom--News and Discussion Thread

If people want a more "serious" Sonic, why don't they just read the comics? That's what they're there for. Fans need to understand that comics are a great outlet because it can appeal directly to the fanbase due to their cheap production cost. Animation is far more expensive, so they try to appeal to a larger group of people to ensure they earn money to justify the cost. And there's no safer bet than a comedy where kids don't have to worry about seeing the episodes out of order due to lack of story arcs or continuity.

I don't mind if Boom is a comedy - as long as the humor is good and classy. I don't want to see dumb fart jokes or anything like that in a Sonic medium.

My feelings exactly. If they did that (among other possible things), then that would mean they were trying too hard to be funny.

and I have a seperate thread for it now but to correct one thing, I never said Boom was a continuation of Satam.

You... do know that's been done before in other Sonic medium right? The early Archie Comics and Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog had that kind of humor from time to time. I'm not saying I want that either but what I think a lot of people are forgetting is that every Sonic series (Adventures, SatAM, Underground, X, even the OVA/Movie) has been different and had different focuses. The focus of this one is clearly on more light hearted humor then on serious characterization or deep plots or anything. And really I don't know why people are expecting that when this one is clearly being made or at least seriously associated with SEGA. And Sega really dislikes the idea of making Sonic too serious. They've tried forcing the comics and SatAM not to give Sonic too much characterization in order to make him seem cooler, had to have all the drama in X be on some little kid instead of the main star, and their attempts at creating some sort of relationship in Sonic 06 were hindred by this as well, in addition to all the other problems with that. So yeah like it or not the Sonic series is suppose to be fairly light and goofy and hey so long as it's funny while doing that (and my hope this actually uses all the characters more then some of the later games have) I have no problems with that.

Actually that brings up something I hope we get with this series as from the trailer most of the bits were fine (especially Eggman's rambling about his robots or Sonic always insulting him) but the one that drew my attention was the little exchange between Sonic and Knuckles. From what I heard they're obviously making Knuckles the strongman and power house of the team but instead of also making him the idiot, I kind of hope they make him the jerk. Which would make sense and be a tribute to their original rivarly and would make form some funny exchanges between the two. Like for example I think the clips are mostly coming from that episode where Sonic "fires" Tails as helper and looks for someone else and I guess is obviously asking around. Which makes me hope the context of the joke is Knuckles sort of making fun of Sonic for his offer or his ego thinking it's about him and not just him being oblivious or anything. Because to me that'd be funnier and fit more then just say making him stupid. Really there are other characters to do that with in this series, I just don't want it to be my favorite when there's another better avenue they can take this.

why does SEGA not want Sonic to have depth? how does that make him cool?

Well, Neo, that's why I'm not a fan of the AoStH cartoon, or some of the early comics. I HATE crude humor, its the lowest form of comedy. If Boom lowers itself to that level, I won't be watching.

Sonic Boom is aimed at kids and kids love funny. Plus, the show is going to be a companion piece to the upcoming video game of the same name. There's still the comic books for those who want depth. No, it's not exactly SatAM, but you take what you can get.

It's less they don't want him to have depth but they don't want him to ANGST, which in fairness isn't really part of his character. The things they tended to boycott Sonic doing in Satam and the comics were him bauling his eyes out over some forced traumatic scenario (eg. having his family erased from existence or reverted to a state of living death by Robotnik's machinery). There's a lot more to personality than angst and shock value trauma. Most serious interpretations actually tend to overlook this aspect, and thus we get blank slates who just have endless tragedy heaped onto them (what exactly are Bunnie and Rotor's personalities without their sad backstories?). Hell, AoSth arguably had some of the most poignant depth between him and Tails within all the humor and slapstick.

:^: Exactly. There are other ways to give characters depth besides having them go through a lot of angst and pathos.

More than that, pathos aren't just melodrama. Clowns can have tons of pathos. Looney Tunes is pathos humor. Look at Wile E Coyote.

well, if there is tragedy in Sonic's life, in whatever continuity, why shouldn't he be angsty? and I thought people kept telling me in the Lola Bunny threads that the Looney Tunes do NOT have depth. so, why that comparison?

and if the show has zero continuity, there will be no depth anyway.
I

I'm not directly talking about it her anymore but again, I have a new thread for Satam discussion.

You know, I really don't get the desire for Sonic the Hedgehog to be dark, angsty and serious. The games were never dark. Sure, some of them had more detailed stories than others, but they were never all that dark. I don't get why SatAM fans want or expect any and every new Sonic series to be like SatAM. Why is just being funny a bad thing? Characters like Mario, Pac Man and Donkey Kong have/had just as well thought out stories as Sonic has, so why is it that those characters are allowed to have shows which are just fun but Sonic isn't? I don't get it.

because goofy and fun kind of stupid shows like the Mario cartoon don't have character development. that's why it's bad. being serious is better for that. if the other characters had a taste of that and they went back to camp, I'd complain there too. it's the same reason Batman and Robin gets Batman fans angry

and like I said, the games didn't really have an identity back then, so, Satam has a right to be called the true version of Sonic.

I'm sure using the DK or Mario cartoons are a good example, Goldstar, since those shows weren't nearly as good as the Sonic the Hedgehog show, from a critical standpoint. :P

I mean, some people hold the DIC Mario show on the same level as the CD-I games.

But like I was saying, I don't mind if Boom is a comedy. I just want it to be a smartly written comedy that doesn't rely on crutches.

but again, zero continuity and all comedy means carbord cutout characters.

In your opinion. Please don't make pat statements like that and try to pass them off as fact when that's just how you feel.

Look, Sonic Boom is going to be a comedy. Fact. Some people are going to like that, and others aren't, but no one's being forced to watch the show. If a comedy's not to your liking, just don't watch Sonic Boom. If you prefer SatAM and would rather see a dark and serious take on Sonic, read the comic book series. Problem solved. I don't see what all this back-and-forth is supposed to accomplish.

how can it have any character depth or development if there is no continuity?

Kids aren't looking for character depth and development. They just want to see Sonic run fast, trade barbs with his friends and beat the bad guys. Seriously, stop complaining about how this show is going to be a comedy with little to no continuity and stop derailing this thread. You're beating a dead horse at this point.

at least part of what I said was about Sonic Boom and how there will be no meat to the story or characters. the creators said EVERYTHING will be reset for each episode, no consequences, at all. even The Simpsons had their characters grow without continuity.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
