Three years ago Mr. Cody Rhodes joined his Bullet Club/Elite brethren Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks, as well as Jacksonville, Florida sports juggernaut Tony Khan, to form what has become an exciting, alternative in mainstream pro wrestling to the WWE. All Elite Wrestling has captured the fascination of fans since 2019, mixing modern independent professional wrestling, lucha libre, technical wrestling, stiff Japanese wrestling, hardcore wrestling, and Attitude Era names and excitement with a plethora of other influences and marquee performers (some, like Keith Lee and Lance Archer, were misused by the WWE, while others like Bryan Danielson and CM Punk reached their full potential in WWE but were ready for something more). Over the months and years, more and more shocking debuts and incredible, five-star matches have come to define a new era of non-WWE professional wrestling on cable and PPV. In many ways AEW is doing today what TNA never could, and may eventually reach heights WCW never reached.
As we read in mid-February, however, due to a variety of reasons both plainly reported and assumed by fans (money, booking limitations, frustration with the fans no longer considering him to be part of "the revolution," etc.), Cody Rhodes has decided to leave the promotion he helped found and return to the WWE. But in the weeks since these initial reports, the "dirtsheet" Web sites the Internet Wrestling Community has come to know (and sometimes love, sometimes not) have been unable to properly decipher where Cody Rhodes is going (or when) from the reports their journalists have received. Is he pulling a Brian Pillman, trying to create a bidding war between AEW and WWE (meaning it's possible he won't end up leaving the promotion based out of Jacksonville)? Is he plainly going to WWE? Can he not decide? Is he asking too much money from the WWE? Is WWE lowering their initial offer because they feel he's locked in? Did he have a new idea for his physical look put together for his big return, but then decide against it? Articles with headlines reporting all of this and more (usually without the question marks, as every wrestling news site wants its fans to believe that it and it alone has all the facts when it comes to professional wrestling) have appeared on our computer and phone screens the last few weeks, leaving everyone confused.
No one really knows at this time, but it looks like if Cody is going to debut in time for WrestleMania 38, tonight would have to be the night - RAW in Jacksonville, home of AEW. Dave Meltzer recently reported that Cody was listed in internal WrestleMania documents as the opponent for Seth Rollins, but that was before the chaos began and multiple inconsistent reports came in about where Cody Rhodes was going, and when.
Everything boils down to the March 14, 2022 edition of WWE RAW in Jacksonville, Florida. While the pro wrestling world mourns the imminent death of an icon, Scott Hall, we all also indeed find ourselves asking, "What does the future hold for Cody Rhodes?"
