The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride

Anyone remember this movie? I just got to re-watch it after a couple years and I have to say... I'm a little dissapointed.

I actually thought for a DTV it was pretty decent. Zira was an interesting bad guy (and very well-written) without just being a clone of Scar, and the supporting cast wasn't just a bunch of rip offs of the original supporting cast. (i.e. Vitani and Nuka were pretty different from the Hyenas)

And the plot overall was fairly interesting, while all the repetitive elements can be attributed to being part of 'the Circle of Life'.

The animation is actually pretty decent too, without looking too glossy like a lot of the disney sequels wound up looking.

The story is pretty interesting in this movie, but most of it is brought down by bad dialogue. Although if they had the original Zira suicide scene it would up the story by 4 points for me.

I thought that it was one of the best DVD sequels actually. It wasn't as good as the original Lion King movie, but it was pretty darn good as far as sequels go. The original characters retained most of their personalities from the ending of the first film and the new characters stood out for their own. Zira was a really good villain and was almost as creepy as Scar himself in some aspects. The storyline works well enough and I thought that the whole movie was overall enjoyable.

The movie's OK,and I actually do like Kovu alot (it's interesting to see how Kiara manages to change his worldview),but much of the dialogue is really dumb (Timon and Pumbaa were funny here,though)....The songs were good as well (oftentimes,when I play the movie,I'll just skip to the songs...I like "One of Us" and "Love Will Find A Way" alot)...

When this movie came out on video, I loved it. Animation was better than those DTV sequels Disney makes nowadays. I think the story is solid and creatively explores the characters. I'm glad Pumbaa and Timon took a backseat for better storytelling. And bringing back Matthew Broderick for Simba was perfect.

The only thing that bothers me today is that I'm not sure whose story it is. Is the movie about Simba, Kiara, or Kovu? It keeps switching POV and subplot focus.

Zira is falling off the cliff and Kiara tries to help her. Instead of taking her paw Zira just grins and says "No, never!" and then she let's go and falls to her death.

Yes that is one of my favorite deleted/removed scenes. It only exists in animated storyboards but it's still impressive. Her "No Never" is quite haunting.

Oh and she does in while smiling because by killing her self she (in her mind) got the final victory over Kiara.

It's clear why that ending was not accepted.

Na 1 and 1/2 is better In My opinion then Lion King Two, but I like both.

This is one of the better Disney cheapquels out there. Like someone said early, good story, bad dialogue. I remember that "We need to get this kid a beeper" line from Timon stuck out to me as terrible.

If there ever was an example for bad dialogue ruining what could have been an awesome scene it would have to be "My Lullaby", let me compare it to a foreign version that removes much corny dialogue for a more mature script.

This. A thousand times. That song could have been the next "Be Prepared"...

That was my real problem with the film; the premise was terrific, and there were some terrific scenes (I AM Home!), but the movie seemed to switch between epic fantasy and funny animal comedy. One could argue that the original LK did that too, but the humor there never felt too out of place. Timon & Puumba, for intsance, fit in with the main cast as while still managing to be very funny. But in this one, they just seem unnecesary.

EDIT: I still think this is one of the best DTV's, but... what does that really say?

Yes it is better but had an english version changed that much from a japanese version people would be screaming murder.

Not if they had converted it for pure epicness Most Japanese-to-English conversions are done as censorship...

Both versions are so bloodthirsty, but the Japanese version takes the cake. Either way, it's interesting (in a bad way) that Zira also wants to hurt Nala through Simba's murder.

Didn't happen, though.

I love this movie, Kiara and Kovu make a more interesting couple (mostly because they have better personalites as a couple) though Kiara being able to stop both sides 'could' have been somewhat more convincing.

I agree that Simba's Pride was definitely one of the better sequals, I would have done some things differently

1) Take out the Upendi song all together. I mean, really...
2) Better dialogue for Timon and Pumbaa. "Somebody needs to get a beeper for this kid" just doesn't work.
3) Make Kovu's "turning to the good side" more convincing. I'm sorry, but after being trained his whole life to kill Simba then suddenly getting all soft in less than 2 days? I'm just not convinced.

Otherwise, yes. It's a fairly good movie.

Edit: One thing that bothered me though. Isn't Kiara and Kovu cousins? I guess it didn't matter since they were animals?

No...though Kovu does resemble Scar,they aren't related(and they mention it a few times in the film),so he and Kiara aren't cousins (though if I remember correctly,in the original script,Kovu was Scar's son,but it got changed when they realized that would mean Kovu and Kiara are blood relatives)...
