The Strange Case of TLH

I think you know what this acronym stands for, and if you don't, it means The Loud House.

Basically, the Loud House is one of Nickelodeon's most popular television shows, and one of the most popular television shows of the 2010s and this entire century. Why is it strange, you ask? Look at Nickelodeon's other big cartoons.

SpongeBob Squarepants. Fairly OddParents. Avatar. Rugrats. All of them have had an actual lasting impact in popular culture, spawning dozens of memes, YTPs, namedrops, and whatnot, constantly being referenced by other cartoons, including by TLH itself. Yet despite making boatloads of cash for the channel, The Loud House has had little to no cultural impact on the size of those cartoons, let alone any cultural impact.

It almost seems like the only time you hear about it is in discussions about the worst fanbases in television, cartoon-focused channels like Vailskibum and LS Mark, and looking up interesting world records. SpongeBob and Avatar still have dedicated fanbases today, and you hear constant references to their most iconic quotes, but how many unironic Loud House fans do you meet on your own merits and not through DeviantArt or something else? How many memes based off of Loud House scenes do you see getting posted on social media and going viral?

I find it interesting that a show could make its way to the top of the cartoon mountain all while still feeling like some mid-tier cartoon with the likes of Legends of Awesomeness and JuJu and whatnot.

Hey, Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness and Tak and the Power of Juju are at least a 7/10! The actual mid-tier cartoons Nick has are usually from this decade (like Glitch Techs and Max & the Midknights).

I think Loud House definitely had some of these at launch, but would slowly fall out of public favor due to an amount of happenings (like Savino's firing, or announcing a spin-off after 2 years on air).

I assume whenever it goes off the air and some time has passed, it'll get some of these pop culture impacts.

It's not very memorable or very funny. The only quote I can think of off the top of my mind is "I'm noticing a serious lack of balls in this room." Not to mention the fandom, which likes to put them in positions they shouldn't be in. That type of depravity is usually saved for anime...or Life With Derek, but that was justified.

I guess this is a bit like how Avatar (blue, not airbending) films make a minimum of $1.5billion despite the internet's indifference (at best), or how shows like Yellowstone or even old Criminal Minds episodes get more views than a lot of the stuff that gets the jibbers jabbing online; pretty much everyone watches TV and Film, but relatively few people spend much time talking about it online, and sometimes most of the smaller group is completely uninterested in some of the things that enrapture the larger group.

That said I found Loud House to be a pleasant but forgettable show. I enjoyed catching the odd episode on Nickelodeon at one point, but haven't really even thought about watching it since I stopped watching "live" TV. I remember liking the art style, but little specific details. In the years since "oh, living with my wacky family is driving me crazy! But I love it! But it's crazy" has become a rather overused premise in US animation.

It was also lucky to outlive Chris Savino's scandal and firing by so much, given that it was semi-autobiographical.

To be fair aside from SpongeBob, those other shows have ended and have existed longer so that's a key difference. It's likely we'll see more of that for TLH after it ends.

Heck, Fairly OddParents didn't exactly get referenced that much during the time it was airing its last few seasons and also was growing a hatedom. Even Rugrats kinda had a lull in the 2000s after SpongeBob became number 1 Nicktoon in 2002, with the show itself getting no buzz when it ended production in 2002 or the final episode in 2004, and that doesn't take in account how its spin offs ended with little fanfare with a majority of All Grown Up's final two seasons burned off in unadvertised early morning slots from 2007-08 and Pre-School Daze being burned off in a similar manner in 2008 despite both wrapping up production in 2005/2006.

Give it time and I'm sure the nostalgia's gonna kick in.

I still watch the show, but it's far from being a unanimous hit nowadays. It became less popular than, say, PAW Patrol. TLH merchandise appears to be lower nowadays compared to the past, Savino or no Savino.

I feel like it's because the show came out during an era where cable tv was slowly declining as opposed to Nick's other hit shows. So it shouldn't be no surprise you don't see people talk about TLH that much. It was appreciated a lot during its early days, but nowadays it's a punching bag thanks to its embarrassing fandom.

Is that Joan Cusack voicing Jessie in that Toy Story Papa John's commercial? If so, it sounds rough. Woundn't surprise me if it wasn't, though.
