The Toonami Thread

Hmmm, the main reason way I love Toonami so much is that it doesn't made me feel like a kid, more like an adult. I mean, yeah, a good half what Toonami was showing are for kids (And some were really for kids), but some of the shows really didn't hold back at all.
Death, killing, big lost, love, hate.
Most cartoon shows would never show those things to kids. Maybe because kids won't understand or it will be too much for kids.
I begin watching Toonami around '98. And seeing some of those things did made me feel little mature. The block wasn't talking down to kids.
And I felt like you can be any age watching Toonami, 7 to 20+.
And it also made me love anime (By watching Toonami, I was a hard-core anime lover for a good 6 years until I've calm down with it and became cool with anime). But yeah, the anime shows were edited, but it still got away with a lot of stuff. Mostly what it had shown like the message the series was bringing or the image it was showing.

And the block did shown a lot of great series. A LOT.

But until '06, I kinda did stop watching Toonami. The block, make it, THE WHOLE NETWORK change. It lost its edge. It lost its style, the feel. I felt like it was getting dum-down. Maybe CN was getting little strict or something.
But it was '06 where I just stop watching the block.

Can Toonami come back and have the same impact like it had? Kinda. I really doubt it. CN been acting weird lately; adding live-action shows, being really strict, changing things every 10 seconds, being to random, being more like for kids than being like for kids & for adults.

Will there be another block thats like Toonami? No, not really. But it can have like the same feel.

Toonami Philippines, believe it or not, is actually still around, although it's schedule only consists of Ultraman Max and the 2003 Spider-Man show. It's also got a weird new logo.

A random question... was Toonami better as an afternoon block or a Saturday night block?

Personally I'd go with afternoon because I don't really miss Saturday Toonami, I miss afternoon action and not even Miguzi really filled that void for me at least not after TMNT left. Nothing against Saturday Toonami, unlike many people I consider 2004-2008 to include some of the best line-ups Toonami ever had (yes even in 2008 until they got rid of DBZ and One Piece).

CN has YAH for premieres along with scattered shows here and there so the purpose of Saturday Toonami is served just fine but I personally think CN would be looking a lot better if they had 2 hours of action cartoons before prime time again. I'd definetly say afternoon. hmm...2004-2008? really? maybe during those 4years, toonami had lineups that best appealed to your tastes...? idk. lol...i'm your opposition.

anyways...i believe we can all agree that toonami started dying when it moved to saturdays...which is when naruto began to air. miguzi was "okay" had a more kid friendly tone, but it was alright. but my opinion could honestly be biased...cuz i actually liked, totally spies, code lyoko, and yu-gi-oh gx. you are here is doing okay, but needs to push TSS back in and pull Johnny Test out. is it even an action show? i remembering seeing johnny test back on "kids wb" yes. that long ago.

Let me break it down for ya.

Sure Saturday Toonami had some of the best line-ups.
The last good line-up being double non-filler Naruto premieres followed by new One Piece (FUNimation dub) and Cell Games DBZ.

2007 was a really weak year overall but even it had some moments. Such as the short lived airings of MAR and The Prince of Tennis with a rather massive block of premieres and some excellent movies.

But Fall of 2005 until summer of 2006 was pretty much awesome. Naruto, Uncut DBZ, Bo-Bobo, IGPX, the last season of JLU, new Teen Titans, Zatch Bell, etc. With only the occasion snaffu. Then Pokemon Chronicles came along in summer of 2006 and well... that got pretty lame. But you know what makes up for that? A Month of Miyazaki that's what. Uncut Princess Mononoke on Toonami? They had to be crazy or something but they did it.

I also liked 2004's Saturday line-up a lot. Yu Yu Hakusho, Justice League Unlimited, Teen Titans, Gundam SEED and Megas XLR made every Saturday night epic. We lost SEED but it was in favor of Kenshin so that was fine by me.

You wont get any argument from me that the early part of 2005 was pretty awful. We gave up Megas XLR in favor of the first lowsy season of The Batman. But the later part of the year more than made up for the 6 months of bland programing asside from JLU and Zatch Bell.

Weekday Toonami had many great line-up but they also had a lot of really lousy ones. I mean seriously DB/G Gundam/DBZ for 3 hours? Not a great line-up, too much of the same. Don't even get me started on Fall of 2003 with SD Gundam overplay and nothing really GOOD except Dragonball's final episodes. Even so one of my favorite line-ups was in the weekday days. Spring of 2003 with G Gundam, DBZ, YYH and Kenshin (later Cyborg 009) and there were many great line-ups in those years asside from that. I'm just saying Saturday Toonami had some great line-ups as well. And some really slick packaging until the revamp.

Toonami did not start dying when it moved to Saturday night. They made excellent use of that time frame and played some shows they probably wouldn't have in the afternoon. Such as PG-V Naruto and the like. They made a show for Toonami in those years and played some terrific programming.

Toonami started dying precisely when IGPX was deemed a failure and was pushed off the block it was designed for. That and the addition of Pokemon were the begining of the end. But even then Toonami still had many great moments in those dying years. Right up until they booted FUNimation One Piece in 2008.

All of that said. Toonami IMO had more purpose as a weekday action block and if anything is missing from the current CN it's a weekday action block of some kind.

then i'll lay it out this way: both toonami weekday "and" weekend were awesome. that set aside...they both were far from perfect.

[side note.] Bobobo makes adventures times silliness and randomness look like putty.

some first anime was ninja scroll, and others naruto, or death note, full metal alchemist. all love. not hate on those titles. respect for all of them.

u know what? i grew with anime, as alot of ppl have. my first 7: 1. speed racer 2. ronin warriors 3. Sailor Moon 4. Dragon Ball Z 5. Pokemon 6.digimon 7. Voltron
see know, those chosen few werent in the opposing side's opinion "spectacular" but they are what i was exposed to as anime.

that said, choose out of those 7, anime like that, that appeared on toonami during the weedays...

then choose out of those 7, anime like that, that appeared on the weekend toonami...

dragon ball z was the biggest of them all for me. and around the time toonami transferred to the weekend, dbz was over. and they began airing DBGT(not a fan. its like they tried to combine the action of DBZ to the adventure of dragonball. on top of that the animation and music was altered, and Akira Toriyama wasnt even apart of the team that created DBGT)

basically what i'm sayin is that weekday toonami aired anime from the 90s(the majority) and a couple of 80s(thundercats, original mobile suit gundam) and 90s anime...Now i believe its called the "boom" era? please dont qoute me...i'm not sure if that term[boom era] is factual or not.

i love 90s and 00s anime. but there's this intense quality that you feel while watching 90s anime. not a purist here..lol just look at my display pic (Eureka 7: 2005)

alright. final statement: I perfered Toonami weekdays, because they aired anime that appealed to me, which happens to be from the 90s. zatch bell? its okay...lol even have the game too. gundam seed? g gundam fan. see? so i agree the block on saturday was not dying. just that the content(the shows) didn't appeal to me as much as the shows during the weekdays.

oh and yu yu hakusho? they aired that amazing show both weekdays and the weekend toonami block.

Only 00s anime I know that captures that epic feeling i experienced with the best of the 90s anime (cuz we all know there were tons of lame ones too.)
would have to be Rahxephon. alot of art and effort was placed into that series. as to that of Neon Genesis Evangelion. both from opposite decades, but both have that overwhelming feel to it. 90s anime has alot more gems than 00s anime, and 90s anime also more lame series than 00s anime.

Even if CN making a block thats somewhat the same like Toonami, it won't be the same.
Its not because Toonami shown anime...Is because Toonami didn't really hold back to kids. Well, most of the time.
Like I said earlier, Toonami got away with so many things back than. The message & image it shown.
But, to me I mean, CN is pretty strict about censorship now. So having the same feel like it has before might not be the same.

We WANT to see Y-7 Action Shows. And it shouldn't be Toonami, Toonami's dead, they need to create something new with the same edge, but that just gives us a different kind of cartoon, seen nowhere else on CN

But still. Even though about every anime was edit, many things still got away. Try finding the edit version of DBZ where Goku fought Frieza. Even though it was edited, there's still a lot of blood in that edit version. And its kind of hard to talk and or show death on cartoon shows with out making it as a joke.
Now, I'm not saying showing blood and death made Toonami so great. When I watch toonami as a kid, I felt little mature. Toonami didn't really hold back at things. Toonami didn't care you were 6 or 34, Toonami just shown us great action shows.

The only thing that I find sad is that they just didn't move Toonami to Fridays. They had the new shows to make it a hit again. Part of what killed Toonami was the advertising. Imagine a block like this.

That is one heck of a block. This line-up would've worked well for YAH to.

Over the 12 years that Toonami was on I watched it 80% of time, because I had stuff like school and other stuff I could NOT get out of But when Tom move to saturday I was there & now since Cartoon network has killied of toomani I still watch CN on for the anime and the same for AS on sturdays
but when Anime is not on I will turn my tv off or Just have it on as background noise..

I have a question
with all the shows that Toonami has a massed or collected over the years, Do you think that Toonami could start it is on channel, It has been a thought of mine for years now that cartoon network should break in to three different Channels..

Toonami- for all anime from {AS} and CN and real action cartoons
CNO Cartoon Network Origanals like ben 10 and clone wars and other shows made for the CN only and flicks (non anime)

{AS} for all the comdies that {AS} shows sice {AS} hates anime.
and cn has broomerang already as a sister channel

toonami owned rights to those shows, but unfortunately those rights have expiration dates....

They don't own shows outright, they license them. A license gives them the right to play a show for a certain duration of time. Most of CN's anime licenses have expired.

5Ds and Pokemon were licensed by CN. They still have the rights to Bebop, and they paid money for The Big O's second season, so they can show that indefinitely.

can't be done. those liscense contracts expired years ago.
so what ever anime is still on there, or new series to premiere on AS?
those will be liscensed as well. all about the business $$$
