The "What'cha Been Playin'?" Thread

Been playing the Last of Us since Friday. I'm a little past halfway I think in the single player. I've also been trying out the multiplayer as well, which is fun in it's own way. But yea the game is pretty awesome.

Dust: An Elysian Tail
It's better than Odin Sphere. I'm sorry. I have to mention it. But, it really is. I had fun. Most of the bosses were kind of weak though. The story was cool. The art, voice acting and music were all great.

I was playing Borderlands and Ys The Oath in Felghana for awhile, but my analog stick for the 360 isn't working whenever I push up, so...that's going to have to wait.

I am trying to play Heavy Rain, but I hate, I mean despise, the tank controls. They make just moving the character from place to place a huge chore. The movement controls in the original Resident Evil were better, honestly. That's a big shame because it's otherwise a really good game.

Today I actually took a break from it and played some Tomb Raider Underworld. I recently finished the new Tomb Raider, which was brilliant, and wanted to go back and finish this one. It's good too, in a different way. It'd be nice if we could get a Tomb Raider that melds the viscera and grit of the new one with the big puzzles and acrobatics of the old ones.

I also recently finished Bioshock Infinite, great game, and decided to go back and play Bioshock 2. I know this might be blasphemy, but in some ways I liked Bioshock 2 better. Not because of the story, Bioshock 2's story is pretty dumb. But because of the more sustained and intense challenge. Infinite is a relatively casual game with a regenerating shield. You can pretty much blunder your way through. In Bioshock 2, however, the enemies come at you hard and fast and they can mess you up quick, so you have to put more thought into your tactics. My method was just to set as many traps as possible for the parts when you defend the little sisters, but even then it could be challenging. I guess you could rely on the Vita Chambers but I don't, that just feels like cheating.

Oh yeah, and Bioshock Infinite only lets you carry two guns at once, and those feel very samey. Bioshock 2 lets you carry your full arsenal, and all the guns have three kinds of ammo for more varied tactical options.

Anyway, if anyone has written Bioshock 2 off because it seems a little bit like a "me too" sequel, give it a chance. You'll probably be pleasantly surprised.

I am attempting to slowly buy some of the older PS1 games I own for the PS3 just for backup on the fated day my PS2 will finally kick it (nearly 12 years and still going strong), so I started by getting the original Spyro the Dragon. It's the only Spyro game I've ever played and finished all the way through (120% and all) and the only Spyro game I liked. I could not get into the Spyro 2 or 3 (and I never played beyond that) because I didn't enjoy the drastic changes it made. There's something about the simplicity of the first that I really, really love. Also, I just love that the inventory screen for the stuff you collect is so well organized and neatly layered. Hey, Donkey Kong 64, you could have learned something about that from Spyro; your disorganized collect-a-thon still haunts me!

Hooked on Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS).

Also went back to Demon's Souls (PS3) and just been reminded of how frustrating it can be.

Add me to the camp of people who genuinely enjoyed Bioshock 2.
Was it a game that needed to be made? Maybe not, but for what it was, at least it was well-done.
Being able to use your guns and Plasmids at the same time was a welcome addition.
And even though the game still takes place it Rapture, at least it was areas in Rapture that weren't in the first game.

But on subject, I've gotten back into playing The Last Story.
I'm on Chapter 19, so I'm almost halfway through the game now?

And I'm also continuing Fire Emblem: Awakening, as well.
In addition to taking care of my town in Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star...

I managed to get past World 1-4. It took a while but I beat the Giant Buzzy Beetle. I'm glad I had enough POW blocks to do it.

KH:BBS:Aqua's Story...

I was able to clear my first world, Castle of Dreams. It took me a whole hour to level up Aqua from Level 2 to Level 5! Also, the Cursed Carriage was a pain but I defeated it after a few tries. It was kinda cute that Aqua wanted to try on the glass slipper just to stall until Jaq freed Cinderella. Next stop, Mirage Area to clear the first 2 Command Boards and then it's off to Snow White's Dwarf Woodlands area.

After owning it for almost two years, I finally tore the shrink wrap off and started MadWorld for the Wii. I want to slap myself for not getting to it sooner, because this is exactly the kind of game the Wii sorely needed. I remember the hype around the game when it was first announced, and for me at least, it's lived up to it. At the core, it's a simple beat-em up action game that is exceedingly short and doesn't offer much depth at all. But everything comes together so well, from the goofy announcers to the hip hop soundtrack, that it all makes MadWorld so ridiculously over the top that it's hard not to turn off your mind and simply enjoy it. I didn't partcularly care for the quick-timed events that depend on waggling the Wiimote and nunchuck, because quite frankly I hate motion based gameplay with a passion. But despite that, I really enjoyed this game. I'd recommend it to any Wii owner.

I just opened my Sly Cooper Collection and I recently started playing the very first Sly Cooper game after so long. It feels great to play this game again after all this time and it's even better in HD! I love Bentley the Turtle's wisecracks because they're so funny! So far, I've gone through the first 3 parts of the first world where Sly's first enemy is Raleigh the Frog. I also finally managed to find all the clues and open the first 3 vaults! I only seem to be having trouble clearing all the "Master Thief Sprints" but I guess it just takes time, practice, and patience. Anyway, I'm determined to find everything and finally clear the entire game!

I finally explored GOG.com and got a few things on sale, one of them being this 1999 PC game called King of Dragon Pass (an iOS version also exists now). It plays out like a mix of visual novel, RPG and turn-based simulation where you have to manage and lead a barbarian clan to prosperity and glory in a fantasy setting.

Frankly, it is a bit overwhelming, there are many things to manage and keep track of if you want to do well. This is a game where you will really, REALLY want to read the manual. However there are difficulty settings and, if you can handle the learning curve, it starts to get engrossing. The game is spiced up considerably by scores upon scores of random events where your decision making will be challenged. These offer a wide variety of situations, from dealing with enemy raids to resolving squabbles among your own people. Even decisions on seemingly minor issues end up having some kind of an impact down the line, so players are quickly motivated to consider things carefully. Helping things along are members of your "Clan Ring", basically your council of advisors with their own personalities and areas of expertise that will offer advice on decisions and can make various tasks more likely to succeed. You can hand pick your Clan Ring from many different individuals, which is a whole area of strategy onto itself.

The game is a point-and-click affair and text heavy, though events are accompanied by legions of well-done illustrations. It's a game as interesting as it is imposing, of a sort that you don't really see these days. It's also cheap enough to not be much of a gamble for those looking for something different.

I finished Borderlands 2 today. It was better than the first game, but I really need to stop buying games that I have no interest in. The same thing happened with Dragon's Dogma last year. I knew it was primarily a grind-and-loot affair, which I don't like, but I bought it anyway. It was kind of fun to climb on top of giant enemies, but the main draw of the game just didn't work for me. Anyway, I'll probably play Dust: An Elysian Tail next. I bought it about a week ago, along with some avatar items and gamerpics because I really like the look of it. Oddly enough, Microsoft removed most of those avatar items a few days later, so I may very well have been one of the last people to buy them. Hopefully the game is as good as I expect.

You and me both. I bought all 3 Bioshocks and Max Payne 3, and truth be told, they may very well be great games, I have no interest to play any of them. I bought them because I called myself trying something new for a change, but, yeah, don't feel like playing them and more than likely I'll end up trading them in.

As for me, nothing new. I don't play games until the weekend (the only time I actually have to play games), but in the meantime, I'm studying up on my SSF4:AE2012. I'm going through another character crisis. I plan to use Ryu while going through this crisis, but at the moment I'm leaning towards Yun again (the guy is fun even though he's nothing like his AE self.. beyond broken) as well as Fei Long. I can't get away from the rushdown characters. This weekend I'll probably try Yun out online just to see how I do. I'm expecting to get bodied.

I'm still knee deep in The Last of Us. I think I'm about halfway through. The game is very excellent with its presentation and I love the little details they add that really and truly gives it character. I admit the story isn't doing too much for me because so far, it's pretty much by the numbers. The sense of profoundness that others feel I am not really getting, but I'm hoping that will change. After all, not like most of Naughty Dog's games have genre busting stories - Uncharted's stories were all pretty much Indiana Jones (Uncharted 2 really "WOWed" me because of the amazing gameplay.) Still, I adore most of the characters, especially Bill and Ellie, and I'm looking forward to finishing it.

I haven't been playing the Xbox 360 much this Summer because I've been busy with classes and studying. I've been playing on my iPad a lot more; especially now that I have an app that tells me when other apps become free. I saved a lot money buying apps on sale, such as Badland, Angry Birds: Star Wars, Infinity Blade 2, and much more.

Recently on the Xbox 360, I've been playing mainly Wet, Ghostbusters, and Blur. I like how Wet's protagonist is a non-white woman. That's something I don't see very often in video games, so I'm glad when I play a game that has a non-white and/or female protagonist. I also like it's soundtrack and how Quentin Taratino-like the game is. Ghostbusters is very good for a liscensed game. There are a few bugs, but it's nothing restarting from a checkpoint won't fix. In Blur, I met the requirements to race one of the top dogs and get her car. I'm decent at racing games, but my younger brother is way better than me. Unfortunately, he's not here with me, so I have been stepping up and improving my racing skills. I still can't drift well. :p

On my iPad, I've been playing lots of games. Some were interesting enough to keep, others I deleted to make space for better games. Infinity Blade 2 is much better than the original, if you ask me. There's a lot more variety in the weapons and enemies; with heavy and dual weapons and female enemies and giant monstrous enemies. I also like how everyone speaks English instead of gibberish. My favorite parts is when I met one of the bosses and he was a boisterous berserker telling me how he'll cut the flesh from my bones and stuff. Then in the middle of his boast, he gets squished by a giant beast that becomes the real boss. I like it when they bait-and-switch enemies.

Another game I want to talk about is Blastron. Blastron is very similar to Worms, but it's free so I got this instead of paying $2.99 for Worms 2. The backstory is simple. Humans built robots to kill other humans, but the robots were a little too good and ended up wiping out humanity. The robots started to get bored, so they start fighting each other. I'm really enjoying this game and the online multiplayer. There's campaign mode with A.I. enemies, but they're not as smart as human players. At least they don't gang up on me during a free-for-all. What I really like about this game is the variety in the arsenal. There's the standard rockets, grenades, and mines, then there's the odd stuff (like bouncy grenades, teleport grenades, spears, and poison dart frogs), and then there's the ridiculous and powerful weapons (like the battering ram, wave motion gun, little A bomb, and elephant gun). My favorite weapon is the elephant gun: it may sound mundane, but it fires a robo elephant that nukes half the screen. Just try not to kill yourself using it. Unfortunately, the basic rocket and grenades are not infinite, but ammo for them is cheap, come in packs of 8 and 10, and the game is quite generous with its in-game currency. You also get a free weapons pack every seven hours. Overall, this game is solid and is shaping up to be one of my favorite turn-based games for iPad.

I've made some pretty good progress in a few games I've been playing recently.

Kingdom Hearts:Birth By Sleep:Aqua's Story...In 2 hours, I managed to clear the Dwarf Woodlands area and I'm halfway through Enchanted Dominion. It was hard trying to escape Maleficent's Castle with all those pig warriors constantly attacking! It WAS nice working with Prince Philip though. I still have to defeat Maleficent's dragon form but since I'm currently at Level 11 with Aqua, I'll need to level her up to Level 15 to complete it and then beat the Trinity Armor at Radiant Garden.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star..I finally completed the first world and received my first Royal Sticker! It was a long battle against that Megasparkle Goomba, but the Cat O' Nine & Scissors helped me. It's too bad Kirsten the Crown felt I could've done better, but I'm just glad I accomplished it. The game is great regardless that you need to backtrack an awful lot to get certain key items for the big battles, but it's still a lot of fun!

Brave Story: New Traveler (PSP)...I just started playing this game, and it's pretty good. It has a very nice Final Fantasy style to it. The cat-girl named Yuno is so funny and cute!:D

LEGO Lord of the Rings
In my anticipation for LEGO Marvel Superheroes coming out 18th of October, I'm playing the best LEGO game. The weakness I give it is the lack of vehicles or horses too ride, they don't even speed up while running like characters do in LEGO Batman 2
2012 was honestly my favorite year in games, 2 great fun LEGO games. MY PRECIOUS

After being distracted by other video games, I managed to get back into Ni No Kuni. Man, this game is gorgeous.

Finished Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne a few nights ago.

Lately I've been trying to finish Zombi U,
and of all the stuff I bought during the Steam Summer Sale, I've been playing Fallout.

Pokemon silver on DS. Mostly from boredom, since there's no work to be done at the moment.

Some of the things they've done to this game are hilarious. "Serial radio drama" made me laugh.

I had been farming Pet Battle achievements in World of Warcraft. Its basically Pokemon without any of the charm, fun, or skill, so it really made me want to start playing Pokemon White again.

Today marks the 15th Year Anniversary of ThunderCats (2011). While I find it unfortunate that the show was canceled before it had a chance to finish its story, I am glad that the show's art director was willing to give fans closure via a podcast interview.
Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
