"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

I'll always hold out hope for Tiger and Bunny. I'd like to think Magi and the Fate anime will happen, I just don't know when.

Accel World would be an interesting pick. I've seen 3 or 4 episodes. It's from the creator of Sword Art Online and has a bit in common with it (there are battles in a virtual reality) but the MC is a portly kid with confidence issues, not a Gary Stu (hey there, Kirito). Also the cool factor is way, way higher in my view. For example, there's this one time the protagonist has to take on a crazy guy whose avatar resembles anime Ghost Rider on the other side (or, for you Trigger fans out there, Inferno Cop).

I'd say all three are good talkback images for their respective arcs in SAOII

Though I think an image with both Yuuki and Asuna would be more fitting for Mother's Rosario, rather than just Yuuki. Just my two cents

If anybody's got a good screenshot or different key visual that fits, hit me. I looked a bit on the weekend but didn't see another official-looking thing that'd work well. Not a big deal, but it wouldn't take me long to make a different pic.

I'm not sure about Sailor Moon Crystal. There's been no word on that series being dubbed anytime soon. With its bi-weekly release schedule, they might want to wait until its closer to the end, assuming that Crystal doesn't get another season to cover the rest of the manga after it finises the Black Moon arc. Plus, I get the feeling that Viz might want to finish re-dubbing the original series before they move onto Crystal since there's probably a bigger demand for that right now. Tiger and Bunny might be a good possibility if they go with another Viz Media show though.

There's also a fundamental problem, unfortunately. Sailor Moon might get requested a lot on the internet, but Toonami's key demographic is the adult male audience. Sailor Moon is, yes, a big deal...and for women and girls. So, beyond the hardcore audience, are the old(er) men really going to tune in and keep doing it?

It was different in the old days when it was airing at an ideal time for kids and the block was aiming at boys. Late at night for adults...I don't know. Sailor Moon in any form strikes me as a gamble. I'll be shocked if it ever makes it.

Tiger and Bunny would, as always, be awesome and I'm still surprised that hasn't happened yet :ack:.

Magi would probably work too, and with its sequel that's 48 episodes.

The current Fate franchise would be difficult for a few reasons...particularly length, since it's been brought up before that Fate/Zero would need to be edited down to fit Toonami's time constraints. Fate/Stay Night would be even harder considering it has 3 hour-long episodes in the first half .

Oh man, I'd love to see Accel World air on Toonami. I also love SAO and often disagree with people's complaints about it (including Kirito as a Gary Stu...) but I think Accel World definitely avoids a lot of the issues people generally have with SAO. In terms of themes and how certain story beats are handled they're similar, but they're are quite a few differences as well. And From what I've seen the reception towards AW is far less divisive compared to SAO, at least in terms of the anime community, though that could also be a result of the lack of overhyping for it compared to SAO.

Another reason I'd want to see it on air is just so more people could see the awesomeness that is Kuroyukihime and Ash Roller :D.

I'll see what I can find and PM you :).

I can understand that. I mean, I'm a guy who watched the show and the movies religiously as a kid, but I understand I'm a bit of an exception within the ideal general audience Toonami is marketing towards .

That's a good point. I think that having a Sailor Moon series at all would potentially drive in some good ratings due to how it hasn't been overexposed compared to say DBZ and hasn't been on the air in years. Crystal would be the best choice due to being recent and much shorter than the original series, but whether or not the general audience for Toonami would be that into it is a valid concern. I think that Crystal has a much better chance than the original series for many reasons, but even then, I don't see it airing on the block anytime soon and certainly not the replacement for Final Act.

With Attack in Titan, Kill la Kill, The Final Act, SAO II and DBZ all on the block now, I feel like we might be in for a show that isn't expected due to really high requests. Hellsing was a nice surprise, I hope the next show will be a surprise too.

God helps us let it finally be Fairy Tail. I think the block's struggles is god's punishment for snubbing Fairy Tail.

There is just one problem, it wlll lock-up a slot for years considering Fairy Tail is 200+ episodes long and that Toonami now has a shorter schedule. Toonami has DBZ Kai, One Piece, and Naruto Shippuden, I don't think they need another long running series.

That's a bit of an overreaction to say the least in regards to the block's struggle, even as a joke. The block has been doing better for awhile anyway. More importantly, the last thing Toonami needs is another long-running series that locks up a timeslot for another few years like Fairy Tail. I like Fairy Tail. I think it can be an okay fun watch, although I think that I'm getting closer to the point where the fanservice becomes more blatant, if I haven't gotten there already, and the best arcs so far were back early on in the series' run in my opinion, but I don't think that Toonami needs Fairy Tail. They already have three long-running shows on their lineup. They don't need to add a fourth one, especially if they eventually bring back Bleach reruns. They do need to have some room for shorter series instead of filling it up almost completely on long-running series.

I do hope that whatever they get, it will be something worthwhile for me. Watching the block primarily for Final Act and One Piece is kind of dull for me, especially when Final Act is usually just okay at best, and I already really miss Gurren Lagann, so getting a series that sounds more interesting than most of what the lineup currently consists of would be nice for me.

If god is punishing us for not having FT then God must have bad taste in anime

I don't hate Fairy Tail, but everything it does is done better in One Piece. The action, the quirky character-based humor, the drama it tries to weave in, all of it. I'd much rather the block get to cycle through more good & shorter anime.

Yes. They would have to either get creative with editing and split up the longer length episodes, or it seems to me the 3 AM rerun slot would have to go from time to time. They could also make the decision to let the Fate anime have an entire hour all the way through to keep the schedule consistent. I think the shows are worth that personally, whether the powers that be agree is another matter.

I agree. While I can have fun watching Fairy Tail, in terms of overall quality, One Piece easily beats it out. It does a much better job with its characters and combining its humor with the drama so that it doesn't feel jarring. I would much rather see air a good short anime series over Fairy Tail. Plus, I really don't think that Fairy Tail needs the exposure that being on Toonami would give it.

Countrymen,

Viz only has a handful of action anime left so I could definitely see Tiger and Bunny or Accel World airing next. Also Zetman would be good if they want to go for something a little darker.

And it just dawned on me that there probably won't be another new funiamtion series until Kill La Kill or Titan repeats end. Feels a little odd seeing as how many of their shows aired on the block since its revival. Now that the Toonami crew isn't in charge of scheduling it would be awesome if the higher ups decide to replace One Piece with a different Funi show. It's ran its course but I think its time for something new to set sail. The ratings could only get better.

I would be really surprised to see that happen at this point. It's actually doing well for its timeslot and it's not like it takes up a slot everyone stays up for. Being the final premiere of the night, it can't bother anyone too much either.

Besides that, I'm pretty sure that the Toonami crew are still in charge of scheduling, so I don't believe that the higher ups would force them to get rid of One Piece. DeMarco has said mentioned multiple times that One Piece isn't in any danger of leaving Toonami, so I don't see it leaving anytime soon. It does well enough ratings wise to stay on the lineup and being the last premiere of the night might help a bit too.

Your jokes and / or worrying can end: word out of Anime Boston's Aniplex USA panel is that Mahouka (The Irregular at Magic High School) is not getting dubbed (edit: confirmed here).

Other notes...for those keeping score at home, by my count these are AUSA titles that could count as action without release details yet: Aldnoah.Zero, Samurai Flamenco, Gunslinger Stratos (starts in Japan tomorrow, not a factor for a long time)

Also, while it is from the ASA era, Durarara season 2 is another possibility. It's very new but getting simuldubbed.

That's pretty cool. I really wasn't expecting them to dub Crystal until they finished redubbing the original series, but I'm fine with getting it earlier. I'm not sure if this means it has a better chance of replacing Final Act, but it's more of a possibility now at least.

Painting a picture here -- if Crystal does premier this year, I think I see it being Kill la Kill's replacement more. Naturally, we know [as] gets these a couple months in advance, but I think we get something smaller for FA's replacement, then Crystal airs after KlK ends. Now, for all we know, it could be FA's replacement, in which I could see it airing at 12:30 and just bumping down a few shows, meaning KlK at 1, but right now I like it after DBZK, so I'd hope Crystal just premiers after KlK ends.

Well, I'm thinking there's one more show that they should've aired way back- SWAT Kats. It was legit dark and action-filled, and from Hanna-Barbera to boot. It easily could've been a Toonami launch series. And yet it wasn't. With the online fanbase for SK pretty strong right now, and the fact that SK was referenced in the recent Steven Universe/Uncle Grandpa crossover, to everyone's surprise, now would be a perfect time to add it.

I recall DeMarco shot down a suggestion for SWAT Kats a while back on his blog.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
