"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

Regarding Soul Eater, the dubbed episodes have been removed from Hulu.
That's nothing unordinary. Dubbed episodes of Funimation series come and go on Hulu. The dubbed Trigun episodes, for instance, were gone for a long time and now all of them are back up. Same thing with the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood episodes, they come and go all the time, and the show is still on Toonami and [adult swim]. Also, all of Soul Eater is on Netflix, and so is all of Samurai 7, and Casshern Sins was available in full back when it was on Toonami too. My point is, the series' availability on Hulu means nothing when you look at what's aired on Toonami in the past, so it can't be counted as a sign of anything definate.

I am kinda disappointed if the actual new show is Soul Eater however it looks like it. I guess it'll give me an actual reason to watch it, but I was really hoping for something more interesting, not a show we wish the block had like a few years ago.

Soul Eater? When the hell are they going to air Fairy Tail. That is the show I want.

Not gonna lie I would rather they be airing Fairy Tail than Soul Eater for multiple reasons. But neither are really as mature-skewing as I was hoping for.

And I wan't Tiger and Bunny. But we don't always get what we want, do we?

Besides, it wouldn't be a good idea to get another long-running shonen for the block unless the block expands to 11pm. Also, in my opinion, One Piece should get on Toonami before Fairy Tail. Not saying that Fairy Tail shouldn't come to Toonami, but we One Piece fans have waited a long time for One Piece to return to television and if Toonami can get another long running shonen, then by-gosh, they should get One Piece first.

Someone posted a photo of their DVR listing Soul Eater as well:

Soul Eater can be pretty dark at times, for a shonen series. I'd say it fits well next to Thundercats and Naruto, while shifting the block a little bit more to the "mature-er" side of things. I do hope that we get a more mature, adult-oriented anime like Black Lagoon to replace Thundercats, though.

Why am I not surprised that Syfy is showing Asylum-produced films?

Maybe they're trying to forget Rave Master :p

But seriously, I wouldn't mind if they got Fairy tail either. That art is sweet.

It's a lot like One Piece to me, art wise. Which is a good thing. And the series is good to (until the end of the Edolas arc , at least).

I haven't heard the best things about Soul Eater and I'd prefer seeing Fairy Tail on the block too, even though I'd also prefer that they don't get another long-running series until they get the 11PM hour too. If they do start airing Soul Eater, then I'll give the show a shot and see how it works for me.

Hmm, really? I rarely see negative comments about Soul Eater except for it's ending (although I have seen some people complain about the anime's adaption of the Arachne arc after it deviates from the manga). What are the things you've heard about it?

I'm all for Soul Eater airing on Toonami. It's really popular, well produced, and it's far newer than most of Toonami's other shows since the revival. I've also seen it requested several times.

I think that most of the negative comments I've heard about it is about its ending and from how it isn't the best adaptation of the manga. I don't know much about it though, so I'll give it a shot when it airs in a couple of weeks.

I don't get how people were complaining about the adaptation. The show was almost 1:1 (with a couple exceptions) to the manga, with them going 1 chapter per episode usually (due to the lengths of each chapter being more than usual). It wasn't until around Episode 36 or so when the manga and anime start to diverge, so it's very late in the series.

As someone who has seen Soul Eater, it is a HUGE step up from a choice like Tenchi Muyo GXP.

Okay I gotta jump in here about Fairy Tail since it keeps being mentioned for shows to recommend..

I am utterly uninterested in the very idea of this show being on Toonami. Clearly the main reason it's even getting recommended so heavily is because it's one of the popular shonen shows today. But I personally don't want a show to be on Toonami just because of that. Frankly, that's the thing about Fairy Tail that frustrates me more than anything. Not so much the mediocrity of the show bother visually and in writing. People will even defend the show to the point that its story is better than Naruto.

I mean, really folks? I can't tell what Natsu really values in the story. Does he want to fight strong guys, does he want to find Igneel or does he want to be an S-Class wizard? And would he care in the first place? It's never really made clear and between that and not having any fear or self-conflict in him, he doesn't make a compelling character. And really, he butts heads with the nudist because they just happen to use opposite elements of magic? And that's a problem with most characters in the show. They're all about living in the moment and even One Piece has more of a sense of direction with their characters than that, as much as they're all about adventure. They have goals and the story reminds you of them. Naruto also has that. Fairy Tail hardly does and when you don't have that depth to the characters, there's only so much you can care for about them as you watch them do what they do. Having on-the surface traits is not enough.

And that's in addition to how the story often gets to ridiculously pointless, unnatural gags and..... ugh! The animation! My god! People have said the animation isn't all that great, but I don't think people realize how bad it is. Transitions between scenes and timing can really ruin the mood a scene is suppose to present and the show is almost always being jarringly haphazard about it. And the music, while not really horrible, can get noisy and unnecessarily loud and demanding your attention. And people seem to defend the music so far as to say it's the best music in any anime out there for some reason.

Look, I get it's popular fighting shonen and all. But I would much rather see something good than popular.

Looks like the Toonami guys confirmed it: it is indeed Soul Eater.

While also putting it in bold, "TV GUIDE, YOU ARE AN [BLEEP]!!"

That's good to hear. At least I didn't hear the same kind of reactions to Soul Eater being on the lineup that came up when GXP was revealed.

As for Fairy Tail, I don't want it on the lineup because it's a popular Shonen series. I think that it could add a bit more ratings because of that, but I actually like the series. It certainly doesn't have the best writing or depth for most of its cast, especially Natsu who doesn't offer much for the typical young Shonen lead role, the humor is pretty hit or miss for me, but I usually have fun watching the series, at least after the early episodes, and I think it would be cool to have it on Toonami. I'd prefer One Piece being on Toonami over Fairy Tail since it is a better series from what I've seen and read, but I don't think that Fairy Tail would be a bad choice. I'd at least have fun watching it, which is more than I can say for Bleach, which I find completely boring, and Naruto, which is just annoying and tedious to me.
