I don't think the Toonami crew have EVER cared about that sort of thing. Toonami back in the day was a weekday afternoon block running on a channel that has then and still does target at kids. But that didn't stop them from airing Outlaw Star, Gundam MS 08 Team, Tenchi Muyo, Big O, the iconic 90s DC animated shows and Gundam Wing. Heck, at the time at 9 years old, I knew some of the characters names and faces and even a little bit of their motivations. But all of the military strategy and political mumbo-jumbo always flew over my head at the time. I didn't even understand that Relena basically had stockholm syndrome.
Yeah, they all had to be edited to some extent to fit standards and practices. But the point is that in terms of the stories or overall content, they never exactly screamed "for kids only", even with the editing. Some of them even targeted a different audience in Japan. And all that stuff aired alongside with the more kid-friendly content at the time.
