20121110 Sat [as] vs ESPN vs WWE vs 007 SkyFall : the competition was fierce!

9-11p VB 854+FG 1142 vs ESPN 2555, FG 1830+Cleve 1733 vs ESPN 3657,
12a-2a Boon*2 1334 + Bleach 1027 + GXP 806 + S7 674 + TCats 688 vs ESPN 3657,
2a-3a SBT 640 + E7 578 vs WWE 616 vs ESPN 1516
3a-4a FmA:B*2 557 vs ESPN 1092
4a-5a CB*2 545 vs ESPN 771
5a-6a IY*2 509 vs ESPN 659

This time there was no strange 5:30a lift experienced by both networks. IY lost less than 8% from Bebop which easily beats ESPN's drop. Similarly Bebop's drop from FmA:B crushes the drop on ESPN. That's the good news.

The bad news is everything else got trounced by ESPN. Boon lost nearly 24% from Cleve. That greatly beats BDyn's avg, but still doesn't suggest a good foot. They should dump a Boon for AD at 11p instead. They need to see how these play together before 2013 when [as] has to compete vs FOX AD HD. Bleach's drop was nearly identical to Boons. So 60 min after FG airs, [as] has lost over 1/2 the audience. That's not good.

GXP's #'s were OK ep 1 was lousy & it still beat S7's avg when Bleach falls to 1m. Nonetheless, it did no favors to what follows. It's an experiment though & there are only a few weeks left in Nov sweeps month & Dec is the holiday month where advertisers care less about ratings. There's no reason to move it then until after the 1st of the yr. They still have a chance to put some clever promo's together to attract more of the Bleach crowd.

E7 proves again that shows featuring sophomoric whiners like Renton are turn-offs on [as].

Put the 18-49 Sat morning in perspective when considering such shows for TOONAMI. The 10a WWE Slam did 1.337m & 0.43 18-49. The 2a WWE AM Raw did 616k & 0.26 18-49. Figure similar drop-offs then for the CN shows. The same can be said for Nick. WINX Club drew 1.684m & 0.38 18-49. No way is it doing that well at 2a Sat. WINX trounced a DXD Avengers premiere by nearly 1m & 0.12 in 18-49

Even jason said he wished they didnt release them.
Source? I don't recall that. Ratings are an integral part of TV's social media now so it's bad business not to ant to see them released. Anime fans are more likely to watch because the ratings are released vs if they weren't. It would be much better if DeMarco took the FOX route & actually gave a reason why ratings fall on a particular week.

I forgot the biggest competition of them all for this past week: the release of HALO 4. It did over $220m in it's 1st week & it's a big threat to animated action on TV because it consumes a lot of time from people likely to watch TOONAMI. Would they being playing it late Sat night? I know some people who actually throw parties around this big video game releases. The motherlode of them all is Call of Duty: MW3. I don't know what Black Ops 2 will do, but MW3 did over $880m in it's 1st wk! I imagine the [as] ratings were pathetic that week.

listen i know ratings are important but your look way to much into them . Even if this week was 3 times lower then this one week wont hurt anything months will.Even jason said he wished they didnt release them and so do i

I know, we just wanna make sure the better cartoon show is doing well, is all.

DeMarco has mentioned several times on Twitter and I think at least once on the Toonami tumblr that he'd prefer for the ratings to not be released and to add insult to injury when I said I missed when Adult Swim would show the top 3 for Saturday he replied "I don't". He also makes a point of saying ratings are not the whole story.

DeMarco also makes a point of saying ratings are not the whole story.
Seeing that he's a TOONAMI programmer I can see his pov in wishing the ratings weren't released. He would get asked less often if they weren't such a big part of the social media around [as]. But I doubt the business side of [as] agrees with him. They place a $ value on the social media after all. The ratings don't really upset me one week to the next because Saturday is such a hard day to predict & competition (HALO 4, SkyFall 007) can spring up quickly. What upsets me is when runs are interrupted. If ratings don't matter THAT much then I would like a firm commitment from DeMarco to stop doing this. I would rather have him finish up a weak run quicker by doubling up on it at 4a/5a then see it interrupted any more. I think what they did to Drrr & Kekk last May was in poor taste. I can't really fault them on interrupting the classics like GItS & IY given how many runs they've had already.

Where I find ratings to be most helpful is comparison. On Tue, 11:30p FG fin 9th for cable in 18-49. Anarchy beat it 2.4 to 1.1. Anarchy's encore was narrowly beaten by RC 0.8 vs 0.7. On Wed, 11:30p FG fin 5th w 1.2. It was beaten by Duck Dynasty's 2, 1.9, & 1.3 as well as AHorrorS's 1.6. Duck Dynasty beat RC 0.9 to 0.8 & beat [as] again at 12:30a w 0.7. RC*2 at 12a avg'd 1.5m tv's & drew a 0.7 18-49.

FX's Ultimate Fighter draws between 0.6-0.8 18-49 with just 1m tv's. So who's to say Bleach can't as well? Against major competition w SNL, action-packed movies, Sat BoxOffice, uber VG releases, college football & other sports, who's to say Bleach isn't as good or better in 18-49 Nielsens than anything [as] airs on any other night at that time?

Here are the Toonami ratings only:

12:00 AM - Bleach - 1,027,000 viewers
12:30 AM - Tenchi Muyo! GXP - 806,000 viewers
1:00 AM - Samurai 7 - 674,000 viewers
1:30 AM - Thundercats - 688,000 viewers
2:00 AM - Sym-Bionic Titan - 640,000 viewers
2:30 AM - Eureka Seven - 578,000 viewers
3:00 AM - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - 566,000 viewers
3:30 AM - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - 547,000 viewers
4:00 AM - Cowboy Bebop - 542,000 viewers
4:30 AM - Cowboy Bebop - 548,000 viewers
5:00 AM - InuYasha - 522,000 viewers
5:30 AM - InuYasha - 496,000 viewers

So there was a dip in the ratings this week, no big deal, especially since the rest of the block got decent ratings after 2AM. Samurai 7 and Eureka 7 kind of took a hit and just over 800k for GPX isn't all that great, but as a whole this isn't a nightmare week or anything and as I've said before I don't put much stock into the Nielson ratings despite the numbers being the gold standard for the TV industry.

So there was a dip in the ratings this week
Expectations should be lower for the rest of the Nov. Last week it was SkyFall 007 & HALO 4. This week it's the Twilight Finale & COD:Black Ops 2. Next week it's Pi, Lincoln & Guardians & Assasin's Creed 3. There's another Madden & FIFA to close out the month as well. Dec looks to have just one juggernaut in The Hobbit but Holiday films on TV usually do a number on [as]. Expectations are usually low for [as] then. There's also 3 unbeatens in coll football & as last Sat showed that can produce big #'s for ESPN.

It's no wonder then that Bleach premiere's are taking a break after Nov sweeps. Ep 265 airs at 12a on Dec 1 so figure at least 18 wks before ep 282 airs. The sched now confirms FmA:B is getting a 2nd run b2b at 3a.

And they changed it up again.

Now something new will air at 12:30 following Bleach 265, assuming that airs. People are speculating Bleach will actually not air and they'll run something else in its' slot for 8 or so weeks because the tumblr says Bleach will be on "hiatus" for 8 or so weeks but that could very well mean reruns. Possibly cherry picked ones.

Meanwhile Tenchi GXP moves to 1AM and Samurai 7 gets moved after ThunderCats while Sym-Bionic Titan and Eureka 7 move a half hour later and FMAB loses one airing for at least a week. Since Cowboy Bebop is airing 25 and 26 that week, they might double up FMAB again the week after. Cowboy Bebop is not getting good enough ratings to give it an hour right now, even at 4AM.

And they changed it up again.
[adult swim] schedule can't really trust one vs the other but the servlet says GXP & S7 are staying where they are at. After looking at this week's Sat BO, moving the more tame stuff up makes sense. Twilight Breaking Dawn part 2 pushed the Sat BO to a mil shy ($85m) of May 5th, 2012 Avengers. Bleach did just 726k on that night. Between the holidays & the uber BO slate coming, TOONAMI would be wise to target the general audience more than m18-49 in Dec.

It's a shame that Fullmetal Brotherhood had to conclude at 3a but I suspect it's C3 & 7D ratings are much stronger than it's SD ones. FB fell to 630 vs Avengers but the prior 2 weeks in April it surpassed 900k. It's easily one of the best of the all time. If Bleach were to go on hiatus for 8 weeks they could do much worse than just air the final 8 FB ep's. It might be the best conclusion to an anime of that length ever. While Warner struggles over how to make a successful Bleach film franchise, they would do well to pick up FB as it could likely do well over a 4 film franchise.

Thanks in large part to Star Wars, the 80's gave Hollywood the idea of sequels & trilogies. Thanks in large part to the Dark Knight trilogy, the new millenium has given Hollywood the idea of re-boots. That means Summit will undoubtedly re-boot Twilight again in the next decade. I think FB is the type of story rich with characters that it could be a timeless rebooting franchise for Warner as well.

I really doubt box office is that connected to ratings that late on a Saturday. Especially since Twilight's target demographic is not Toonami's.

I really doubt box office is that connected to ratings that late on a Saturday. Especially since Twilight's target demographic is not Toonami's.
Where you are wrong:
1) See the blog for historical reference on how Sat BO impacts [as]. This isn't 2002. Summit opened Twilight BD p2 at 10p Thu because the strength of the 10p BO has grown substantially in the last 10 yrs. 2) Between the RT of's Twilight & SkyFall 007 all show times from 9p on are likely to impact TOONAMI. While it's true Twilight skews more to females than males, 007 skews more to males than females. Together they combined for $58m of the $85m BO that day. 3) TOONAMI's main demog is m18-24,34, & 49. That being said it's clear it's sponsors do not reflect that. TOONAMI features both toy ads & Trojans indicating how diverse the sponsorship is now. Based on the volume of ads the target demog for the sponsors is 12-24 & the ads are less male centric than in the past. 4) Harem anime's are typically stronger amongst fems than males. The choice of GXP suggests greater diversity in TOONAMI's demog as well.

FYI: Hollywood Reporter wrote that this is likely the last season of SW:CW on CN. Both CW & Detours are likely headed to DXD. This confirms that Detours was aiming more towards a PG than a 14 audience. I believe Turner is going to want to maximize CW's value before it's gone so I think it will be a part of TOONAMI before the 5th season is gone. Turner was going yr by yr with it's renewal & Disney is likely to put an end to that.

I don't put much stock into the Nielson ratings
Sunday Cable Ratings: ‘Walking Dead’ Wins Night + ‘Breaking Amish’, ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’, ‘Dexter’, ‘Sofia the First’ & More - Ratings | TVbytheNumbers TWD fell from 5.6 to 4.9 18-49 but Talking Dead narrowly beat Fam Guy 1.0 to 0.9. FG trounced ComicBookMen 1.0 to 0.5 & CBM greatly weakened TWD's LN encore. RC beat it easily 0.8 to 0.5. RC drew nearly 1.9m which represents a loss of just 300k from FG. Seeing that the "dead" didn't get much screen time in that ep, the drop is no surprise.

FYI 18-49: Nick's Winx 0.32 18-49, Sbob 0.99, TMNT 0.69, B10 0.42, SW:CW 0.52, Rangers Samurai 0.46, WWE Slam 0.35 (1.22m tvs), & WWE AM Raw 0.17 (426k tvs). Unlike this yr, SW E2 & E3 will be released in Fall, 2013 so I doubt there will be a SW event night on [as] to help promote that. S6 will probably be airing on DXD by then.

Ratings for last week are in:

12:00 AM - Bleach - 1,201,000 viewers
12:30 AM - Tenchi Muyo! GXP - 892,000 viewers
1:00 AM - Samurai 7 - 742,000 viewers
1:30 AM - Thundercats - 785,000 viewers
2:00 AM - Sym-Bionic Titan - 759,000 viewers
2:30 AM - Eureka Seven - 615,000 viewers
3:00 AM - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - 617,000 viewers
3:30 AM - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - 632,000 viewers
4:00 AM - Cowboy Bebop - 574,000 viewers
4:30 AM - Cowboy Bebop - 592,000 viewers
5:00 AM - InuYasha - 546,000 viewers
5:30 AM - InuYasha - 608,000 viewers

Highlights:
- Thundercats and Sym-Bionic Titan got more viewers than Samurai 7.
- The hour of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood got more viewers than Eureka Seven.
- The 4:30AM showing of Cowboy Bebop got more viewers than the 4AM showing.
-
The 5:30AM showing of InuYasha got more viewers than the hour of Cowboy Bebop and the 5AM showing of InuYasha.

Samurai 7
is definitely going to be one most affected by the new schedule starting next week. I think Sym-Bionic Titan may do better than Eureka Seven in the 2:30AM slot, but I guess it depends on how well Samurai 7 performs. It looks like Thundercats is doing better than what Eureka Seven used to get in the 1:30AM slot, so I hope Samurai 7 will benefit from it.

Hopefully Naruto will be able to retain more of Bleach's numbers than GXP currently does.

Ratings for last week are in: Bleach 1.2m, GXP 892k, S7 742k, TCat 785k, Sym 759k, E7 615k, FA:B*2 625k, CB*2 583k, IY*2 576k
[as] Sat was a mixed bag. With #1-2 upset in NCAAF & Twilight, Ralph, & 007 pushing the BO near record levels, 9p had VB 500k + FG 960k. But 10p avg'd 2m betw a weaker than avg FG & a stronger than avg Clev. By 11p the football action was pretty much done & the LN games were weaker draws than the prior week. ESPN avg'd 3.3m til 11:30p, but then fell to 2.2m, ESPN avg'd 3.3m til 11:30p but then fell to 2.1m, 1.6m, & 1.3m for the nxt 3 yrs. For 2a it was 983k, 3a 790k, & 4a 702. Against IY ESPN's best was 450k. In fact IY beat ESPN+ESPN2+ESPNU combined for that hr. This time the 5:30a bounce was only experienced with IY.

While Bleach at 1.2m is impressive it's less so with Boon doing 1.5m & 1.33m as it's lead. GXP was the biggest loser with a 26% drop but that's in line with what S7 was doing there. A 17% drop from GXP isn't good for S7 either. Looking at their TOONAMI avg right now, the lineup would have been better off as: Bleach, GXP, TCats, Sym, FA:B*2, CB*2, S7, E7, IY*2. The weakest draws are better suited for 4a & the anchor IY provides.

The weakness at 12:30a has been apparent since DW ended & with Bleach prem's going on haitus that eye sore was going to get worse. DeMarco has addressed that with uncut Naruto. I felt all along that Naruto would become the heir apparent as TOONAMI's lead, but I also wrote that Disney is notorious for playing keep away. They have yet to relinquish Shipudden rights. But that's not a big deal because TOONAMI is setting up well for the spring where I figure the front of the lineup whether at 12a or 11p will be Bleach prem's, IY:Final Act, & Naruto*2. This sets up Shippuden prem's to take over as the lead when both IY & Bleach prem's end. So hopefully viewers will patronize the original Naruto to make that happen.

It seemed like a pretty nice week of ratings. I think that Samurai 7 did a bit better this week than last week. I still wish that they didn't put GXP in its original timeslot and considering that they were going to move everything to get Naruto for the 12:30AM slot, it kind of makes the original change in the schedule kind of pointless. Though, to be fair, they may not have been aware that they would be able to air Naruto when they originally made the change. Thundercats and Sym-Bionic Titan did pretty well. I still don't think it makes sense to put them on before Samurai 7. Even with the better ratings it got this week, they can only air Samurai 7 once, but hopefully coming on after those shows will give the series a bit of a boost for their new timeslot.

GXP is actually doing worse than Samurai 7. Oh wow. Not even close either. Wel... when I say worse it sounds like it's bad, which is it isn't really, but you know what I mean. IMO Samurai 7 should be at 1 and GXP at 2 when Naruto joins. Bleach did amazing and yet it can't come close. On the other hand Samurai 7 dropped a damn lot off too. Ratings wise, having the cartoons in the 1am hour would probably be best, but so would having Brotherhood there. Premieres should obviously be prefered. I'm even against having ThunderCats before a premiere but I suppose it does make sense.

Poor Eureka 7 did really bad. That's such a huge drop. I'd be surprised if Brotherhood hadn't beat it though. Good thing the latter half of the block do good pretty much everytime, That night's winner is still Bleach for breaking 12M. I'd say that's the biggest highlight.

Weird that other than Bleach/GXP, the :30 shows did better than the :00 even when both were the same show.

Weird that other than Bleach/GXP, the :30 shows did better than the :00 even when both were the same show.

Sym-Bionic Titan also beat Eureka, but yeah. It actually happens often with the one hour shows.

Sun ratings: 18-49/p2+ Talking Dead 1.1/2m vs FG 0.9/2.1m. CBMen 0.6/.96m vs FG 1.0/2.3m

It actually happens often with the one hour shows.
It has nothing to do with b2b airings vs single ep. You can't expect something airing at 3a/4a/5a to routinely beat something at 1a/2a. The ratings for FmA:B, CB, & IY have been solid especially given that the 2nd ep has been picking up more viewers than the 1st for these now & then.

Sunday Cable Ratings: ‘The Walking Dead’ Dominates Night, ‘Soul Train Awards’, ‘Liz & Dick’, ‘Dexter’, ‘Homeland’, ‘Boardwalk Empire’ & More - Ratings | TVbytheNumbers ComicBookMen's weakness gave [as] an easy 11p avg victory & that extended some with RC beating 12a WD's avg. Cleve narrowly beat FX prime move for 10p avg.

ND going 12-0 vs USC avg'd an 18-49/p2+ 4.9/13.3m for 3+ hrs. WD avg'd 3.5/7.5m for 2 hrs. But when you throw in the SNF's 7.6/20.8m thru 11:30p, Sun's [as] faced much greater competition. That being said speculating what the 7D #'s might be might give Sat the edge.

Live+7 DVR Ratings: ‘Modern Family’ Leads Adults 18-49 Ratings, ‘Revolution’ Tops Viewership Gains; ‘Gossip Girl’ Biggest Percentage Gains in Week 7 - Ratings | TVbytheNumbers FG gained 41% over SD. But the continuing fantasy/sci-fi saga scripted shows did much better. Rev 71%, Once 56%, & Grimm 71%. It's not a stretch then to say TOONAMI anime sees a similar 60% or better gain over 7D's. Those gains mean a lot less for PT than LN tv because of the higher difficultly in drawing adults to LN. This helps explain some of the reasoning behind DeMarco's moves. Staying away from repeat runs for all but the strongest/classic shows in the stable helps retain those 7D #'s. The "new to TOONAMI" mantra makes a lot of $ sense & I imagine uncut Naruto could see the best 7D #'s of the block while Bleach encores the last 16 ep's. The #'s will be interesting as those 16 ep incl the 2 highest rated battles of the Arrancar saga so far.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
