Son of the Bronx: Adult Swim ratings (February 11-17, 2013) & Son of the Bronx: ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU ratings (February 11-17, 2013) & Son of the Bronx: Cartoon Network ratings (February 11-17, 2013) [line]2[/line]Boon 1342, Bleach 1241, Naruto 1132. Good drop rates between the 3 shows & they all beat ESPN easily. Soul Eater 920. Not only was the premiere weak but it seems some of those viewers turned to ESPN as it's 1am SC beat it's 12am SC by a similar margin. There are better ep of Soul Eater to come so there's still hope. [line]2[/line]TCats 852 (good), S-BT 742 (just ok), E7 633 (weak), GXP 574 (good), FmA:B 549 (good), CB*2 512 (good), IY*2 493 (good). S-BT's 2nd run is not likely to hold up well & that means the rest of the lineup will likely trend lower now. The drop's for the last 3 hrs are good but when the 2:30a lead is 633 there's only so much those shows can do. TOONAMI needs a much stronger show at 2:30a to lead into the classic block. [line]2[/line]YJ continues to prove it's worth as the best performing series on CN Sat. So much so that CN is essentially playing musical chairs with what follows it. The best follower has been FLicks but they would prefer a series. I think this strengthens the argument for YJ continuance. [as] has a similar & worse problem with it's lead on Sat nights. VB lost 70% of the Ice Age:Meltdown lead. That's horrible especially when AD proved itself there with it's Christmas special doubling what VB avg's. I think there's an opportunity here for [as] then. [line]2[/line]9p AD+FG+Cleve, 10:30p BDyn+Boon, 11:30p Bleach+Naruto, 12:30a Soul Eater+TCats, 1:30a SBT+E7, 2:30a AD+GXP, 3:30a FmA:B, 4a CB*2, 5a IY*2. [line]2[/line][as] can sell AD on potential total day #'s of 2.5-3m which should create competition amongst sponsors for the show. The potential is obvious as demonstrated last Feb on SW event night. There was a 40% drop from comedy to SW:CW in LN, but comedy following it reclaimed 30% of that. That led to SW:CW doing as well at 4:30-6a as it did in LN. The 9p AD fixes the drop off from Flicks to [as], & the 2:30a AD fixes the drop off from weak TOONAMI shows.

I wouldn't say Eureka 7 was weak for those ratings. That, at least by a average from when Toonami restarted, is actually over the normal and relatively strong compared now. Now I don't know the "per-year" difference but currently the average for 2:30am is 589,474 from my math on the spreadsheet. Though I could say that they need a "stronger" show but I don't think what they can get would matter at that time.

This is what I have for averages overall:

Take that as you will.

I've usually seen the ratings split into three arcs. The first arc goes from about 12-1am (or 1:30 with Soul Eater now) which is pretty much the shonen arc. This usually grabs the people because of the already massive fan bases that are tacked on to the shows and purely for ratings. Hence why we get drops of upwards of 200k sometimes though I usually see 150k between each show. People don't want to watch the later stuff because it's not their thing. After that, we go into the Loyality arc which lasts from 1:30-3:30 ending after Tenchi GXP. This usually gets around 850-600k nowadays (guessing here) after most of the shonen people leave. After that part we reach the 6 hour challenge arc that lasts to the end. Most of this usually gets about 500K+ though we can see a sub 500k every now and then. Inyuasha managed to bring up the 5am hour to about 500k min since it started.

Keep in mind that's what i've been seeing with the ratings trends. So all of the above is purely opinionated and speculation.

I wouldn't say Eureka 7 was weak for those ratings.
I don't put much stock in comparing ASA's avg to TOONAMI's avg because 1) TOONAMI has a much bigger budget to work with (paying for Naruto/ep), & 2) ASA was reported over the yrs mostly in terms of 18-34 which we have to guess at nearly all of the time for TOONAMI. That being said, I referred to E7 being weak that night because it's drop approached 15% from it's lead. That's just outside of the range of just OK by my measure. Another sign of it's weakness is that it did about as well as USA's 2am RAW. That's one of the shows that usually gets reported on each week that I use to benchmark TOONAMI against & I expect TOONAMI to easily beat it every week.[line]2[/line]fyi: [as] LN weeknight avg: 11:30-12:30a 1.1 18-49, 2.2m tv's. 12:30-1:30a 0.6 18-49, 1.4m tv's vs NAN's Friends 0.65 18-49, 1.22m tv's.

Hey guess what? Those TOONAMI ratings went back up. I don't see Feb 9th's ratings becoming the norm at all even if these numbers aren't going to become the new usual, I think most weeks will be closer to this than Feb 9th. I do however think these past few weeks are showing a lower trend for Family Guy and Cleveland's 10PM hour.

9:00 PM - Venture Bros. - 819k
9:30 PM - Family Guy - 1181k
10:00 PM - Family Guy - 1813k
10:30 PM - Cleveland Show - 1706k
11:00 PM - Black Dynamite - 1202k
11:30 PM - The Boondocks - 1323k
12:00 AM - Bleach - 1289k
12:30 AM - Naruto - 1219k
1:00 AM - Soul Eater - 1104k (BAM!)
1:30 AM - ThunderCats - 1019k (Double BAM!)
2:00 AM - Sym-Bionic TItan - 947k (Almost 1 million at 2AM?!?)
2:30 AM - Eureka 7 - 861k
3:00 AM - Tenchi GXP - 790k
3:30 AM - Fullmetal - 693k
4:00 AM - Cowboy Bebop - 641k
4:30 AM - Cowboy Bebop - 647k
5:00 AM - InuYasha - 676k
5:30 AM - InuYasha - 643k

Not only were the entire first 2 hours above 1 million viewers but Sym-Bionic Titan almost cracked a million as well and Eureka 7 almost cracked 900k at 2:30 on a Saturday while GXP almost cracked 800k and nothing was below 640k. On top of those achievements not only Bleach but also Naruto bested Black Dynamite and the 9:30PM Family Guy.

I think those are TOONAMI highs for Titan and Eureka as well.

TOONAMI made Thursday and Sunday look pretty bad in comparison that week.

Thursday

11:30 AM - Family Guy - 2537k
12:00 AM - Newsreaders - 1660k (this kind of drop makes BD look decent)
12:15 AM - Childrens - 1171k (lost to Bleach, Naruto and Soul Eater)
12:30 AM - Delcoated - 993k (lost to ThunderCats)
1:00 AM - Squidbillies - 942k (lost to Sym-Bionic Titan)
1:15 AM - Aqua Teen - 917k (also lost to Sym-Bionic Titan)
1:30 AM - American Dad - 1044k (lost to Soul Eater)
2:00 AM - American Dad - 1017k (lost to ThunderCats)
2:30 AM - Family Guy - 1027k

Sunday

10:30 PM - Cleveland Show - 1580k (lost to Saturday's Cleveland Show)
11:00 PM - Family Guy - 1853k
11:30 PM - Family Guy - 1905k
12:00 AM - Robot Chicken - 1578k
12:15 AM - Superjail - 1320k
12:30 AM - Metaloclaypse - 1048k (lost to Bleach, Naruto and Soul Eater)
12:45 AM - Frisky Dingo - 955k (lost to ThunderCats and almost lost to Sym-Bionic Titan)
1:00 AM - China, IL - 901k (lost to Sym-Bionic Titan)
1:15 AM - Titan Maximum - 832k (lost to Eureka 7)
1:30 AM - Cleveland Show - 936k (lost to Sym-Bionic Titan)
2:00 AM - Family Guy - 1167k
2:30 AM - Family Guy - 1179k

Son of the Bronx: Adult Swim ratings (February 18-24, 2013) The competition was very weak. SNL encore did just 1.7 in 18-49, Best film on Sat failed to do $12m in BO, & the ESPN ratings will prove there was no major sports competition. Consider these #'s to be the ceiling then for TOONAMI right now. One simple change can improve the ceiling #"s: Kick out Black Dyn. Just move everything up & either encore Boon at 2:30a or bring back FLCL there.[line]2[/line] BD 1202, Boon 1323, Blch 1289, Nar 1219, SE 1104, TCats 1019, S-BT 947, E7 861, GXP 790, FmB 693, CB*2 644, IY*2 658. [line]2[/line] Specifically, S-BT+E7 beat USA's 2a WWE Raw premiere by over 50%. Even with those two shows skewing younger, that still fig's to be at least a 0.37 to 0.23 18-49 win for TOONAMI. But enjoy it while it lasts because the competition is going to get a lot tougher: premiere ep of SNL again that avg 2.8 18-49; BO that is certain to do better with Jack, Oz, Croods; & March madness. Whether or not Feb 9th ratings become the new norm will depend on how a 4th factor (FOX's AD H-D) impacts the ratings starting on July 27th. We'll get some insight into that with the mega BO weekends coming up before then.

I anticipate the norm will be 3 to 4 shows just above 1 million at least until ThunderCats ends its first run, some drops from then out with the occasional rises with maybe 1 show below 500k if that.

Shifting everything up an half hour letting Boondocks hold on to more Cleveland Show viewers could potentially get Bleach to 1.4 million or higher but at least 1.3 million on a more regular basis and if Naruto can keep it's gap from widening with Bleach then staying above 1 million for 2 to 2.5 hours shouldn't be too difficult for the current line-up.

If the new norm is closer to Feb 9th then it's still far exceeding what Toonami was getting for most weeks in its' first 6 months but there was some pretty serious competition in the Summer of 2012.

Wow, those are pretty sweet ratings. I wish they always looked like that.

Woah, four platinum-rated shows, almost five!
That's great news to wake up to.

Let's hear it for SNL having a rerun that week!

Oh wow, those are some pretty solid numbers... After the last week's horrible ratings, this is certainly a treat ;D

I'll say this much, damn. Amazing and a first for this late at night overall. Surprised that SE got over a million as well as TC.

I anticipate the norm will be 3 to 4 shows just above 1 million at least until ThunderCats ends its first run, some drops from then out with the occasional rises with maybe 1 show below 500k if that.

It won't. From what I've over my time doing the spreadsheet and watching the number, this was a incredibly lucky week. Anything in the 1am slot getting over a million is relative uncommon. Thundercats got it three times at the same slot and I really don't expect Soul Eater to do the same. The fact that Thundercats got a mil at 1:30 is even more rare (never happened until this week) and I highly doubt will happen again. I'd say a combination of trending and perhaps the whole adult swim gold thing adding into the ratings may have helped.

Assuming the online streaming via Hulu/Netflix/ASG did add in this week then I could change that theory but i'm doubting it. The main problem is that the whole online ratings addition makes those number into a massive double edge sword now with too much at stake for the block. That and usually most people fall asleep by 1am so from what i've seen this is probably a one-time thing. The only good thing was that the drop was also non-existant as well with only Soul Eater losing 115k from Naruto with nothing else breaking over 100k loss.

I would say your more likely to see Feb 9th and 16th as being the standard ratings than this week as you said.

Regardless here's my spreedsheet updated for this week: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0As2n841m5KUUdGVVYS15dHlkai1Md3JGeDFaY1o3Qnc&usp=sharing

I think we're better off taking it week by week vs looking further out. SNL is new featuring K Hart so figure it will be back to 2.7 18-49 at least this week. The high for SNL is in the range of 3.3 18-49. Jack the Giant Slayer fig's to underperform at the BO this weekend, but Oz, Croods, & GI:Joe Retaliation are definitely going to have an impact on the rest of Mar. We still don't even know if SNL's weakness = TOONAMI's gain. We would need to see something of a trend to claim that. Still, those ep of Bleach & Naruto were drama intense so it would certainly challenge the claim of a need to fight comedy with comedy if that were the case. [line]2[/line] We don't know what the impact will be of FOX's AD H-D starting in late summer either. Will it do more damage to SNL than [as] & if so does that make it an effective lead for the rest of TOONAMI? Will the affils follow AD H-D with Anim Dom shows? Currently they don't air them then but it seems like a no-brainer decision. Maybe the Disney & ESPN ratings will give us greater insight on what happens when an encore ep of SNL is weak.

That's just pure awesomeness, really nice viewer #s. I'm almost more excited for SBT at 2am than anything else. Toonami is basically staying consistent, so who knows, may not be too long before we see that 'possibly' do it! WTG 12a-2:30am portion! And hey, WTG the rest of it!

Of 147...
Bleach was #65
Naruto was #78
Soul Eater was #99
Thunder Cats was #106
Sym-Bionic Titan was #118

Edit: Mistook SBT & E7 being lifted for DST this week when it happens next week

I must have missed something. Why won't S-BT be on this Sat? It's showing up on my local sched. [line]2[/line] There's potential for TOONAMI to really shine here over the next 2 months as nearly all of the films coming out have their share of flaws. There isn't a sure-fire winner amongst them. WB's Jack the Giant Slayer features both a cast & director that have been trending lower of late. The reviews have been mixed so far but it just seems Singer failed to create both a world & chars that audiences will love. It's a similar argument with Oz with the exception of the cast trending up. Sam Raimi is not known for this kind of work or even family entertainment for that matter. His Spider-Man 3 was not well received either. The casting of the witches seems to be the best move, but Franco is mis-cast as the Wiz. That role cried out for a comedian of a Depp or Carrey nature or even Jack Black for that matter. Franco is nothing like that. Even Dreamworks Croods failed to cast a real comedian. Nick Cage & Ryan Reynolds can easily fail to connect with the audience here. Lastly, there's GI Joe 2. Do strong ratings on SyFy & USA for the 1st movie translate to strong BO for the sequel? Outside of the ratings, the first movie was heavily front loaded & not well received. [line]2[/line] SNL premieres have not stopped TOONAMI from avg'g over 1m tv's for the first 2.5 hrs before, so that potential is definitely there for the next 2 months.

Sym-Bionic Titan is still airing this week. It's next week where Titan and Eureka Seven are skipped due to the clocks changing.

These ratings are really impressive. Having four shows break the million mark and almost get close with Sym-Bionic Titan at 2AM is really good. I don't know if that will happen more often, but it does show that Toonami is doing really well and maybe getting the 11PM hour could be more of a possibility if it continues to do so well.

That's right. This yr DST is Mar 10-Nov 3 & always at 2a. Has the tumblr ever hinted at possible expansion to 11p? TOM saying 11p to 6a just doesn't sound as good as midnight to 6a. If TOONAMI were able to keep this up for the next 2 months it might open the door to expansion to Sun nights. Midnight to 2a sounds pretty good there. There's plenty of justification as Sat's ratings show. RC still does a good job holding up 12a but everything past 12:30a pretty much caves in. Does RC still have to air on Sun? I know it's departure from [as] roots, but things have changed. Sun is LN is one of the most competitive nights of the week now with Walking Dead staking claims in late Fall & early Spring, Game of Thrones carrying the torch from late Spring to summer, & True Blood still owning summer. There's just pockets of weakness there now throughout the yr. Wouldn't the RC premiere's be better served on Mon nights? [line]2[/line] In terms of programming TOONAMI/anime has a lot to offer in the genre's of swordxsorcery/dragons/vampires & last but not least zombies. I guess the key though is what to use for a lead? The Supernatural anime is certainly mainstream enough but it's also short. If it did well though I could see WB/Turner greenlighting production of more ep's. TNT certainly gets good use out of the past seasons.

..Holy crap! Nice! Man, I was very wrong to think that reruns of Sym Bionic Titan would not do very well.

:) Lets keep this flow going.

Woah. I expected Soul Eater to get a million, but for the first two hours to all get over 1 million? That's pretty impressive. And keeping all the shows above 640k is even more impressive.

Even if this won't happen on a regular basis, just looking at this shows that this isn't the same Toonami that launched a year ago. Looking at ratings like these make me think back to July and August, when people were concerned that Toonami would be scrapped because of low ratings. It's impressive how far it's come in less than a year.

Also, can someone tell me if Twitter counts for ratings yet, or does that start to happen later this year?

Twitter is never going to count for tv ratings. What's happening this yr is that Nielsen is upgrading the 14K or so Nielsen HH's to measure their net activity both mobile & home based. That is going to be a scaled rollout & has nothing to do with the millions that are included in diary ratings around sweeps time. As far as tv ratings, Nielsen does have plans to aggregate views from established video sites like Crunchyroll, YouTube, Hulu & Netflix but probably not more general purpose sites like [as]. That's going to take probably more than this yr. [line]2[/line] The direction Nielsen is taking seems pretty obvious at this point: they are gearing up for when the industry makes the shift from C3 to C7. That's when net views will become much more important. But they will never include all of us. You will still need to be a member of a Nielsen HH & have a people meter installed to be included in these ratings.[line]2[/line] The two biggest drops on the night were TCats (losing over 16% from Naruto) & Fullmetal (losing over 12% from GXP). Every thing else fell within a 10% range or less including E7. By my standards TCats showed slight weakness there, & Fullmetal was just OK. E7 elevated itself from being slightly weak last week to being good this week, but I thought that might happen with Rei's quest for revenge & eventual death. I think it's going to be hard for E7 to maintain this momentum & I won't be surprised if GXP starts beating it again.

Yeah, I don't expect a lucky week like this to happen all the time, if ever again.
In fact, I'll be surprised if Naruto just manages to barely squeak in a million viewers this week.

The point is, I agree with you on this having been a really lucky week in the ratings, and we shouldn't expect it to become the new normal.
It'd be amazing, sure, but we need to remain realistic about this.

Son of the Bronx: ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU ratings (February 18-24, 2013) There was more to the story last Sat than just weakness in SNL & the BO. ESPN was actually strong. Not ND vs Lou 5 OT strong, but strong nonetheless. MO vs Kentucky avg'd more than 2m til 11:32p. That led SC to near 1.6m til 12a. That easily beats all of [as] comedy that night. After that it fell to under 1m & kept falling until it was under 500k for the 5a hr. All of TOONAMI beat it easily. This certainly suggests that TOONAMI was a greater beneficiary of SNL weakness than ESPN was. That defies logic when you consider how dramatic the ep of Bleach & Naruto were. But it also signifies that the TOONAMI landscape has changed the game. The frontloading of the biggest names in anime coupled with nostalgia shows like TCats is clearly pulling in a more general audience now & while there are sure to be future bumps in the road it seems clear that strategy has proven to work. [line]2[/line] Son of the Bronx: Cartoon Network ratings (February 18-24, 2013) There's no reason then to stop at TCats or S-BT. YJ, SW:CW, & GL should be candidates as well as they had 0.75, 0.67, & 0.61 18-49 ratings that Sat morning. It remains to be seen what Disney will do there but it doesn't look like they are ready for the PG rated violence. Yes there was a time DXD aired a violent Planet Hulk film but that preceded the growth of their fantasy/sci-fi oriented sitcoms. That network has definitely moved away from being edgy since. SW & YJ came in at 6 & 7 behind just ep of PT AT & RS. It beat Robots which beat VBros by over 900k in tv's & probably represented an 18-49 beat down as well.

Today marks the 15th Year Anniversary of ThunderCats (2011). While I find it unfortunate that the show was canceled before it had a chance to finish its story, I am glad that the show's art director was willing to give fans closure via a podcast interview.
Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
