Posting this under The Entertainment Board rather than Back to the Inkwell or The Warner Bros. Club because it does also apply to Live Action DVDs, even if I suspect our members are most likely to be affected via titles that could fall under those umbrellas.

In short a situation has been discovered in recent years that a number of DVD discs that were manufactured for Warner Bros at a particular manufacturing plant between from around 2005 to 2010 (arguably the format's golden age!) have a manufacturing fault that has caused them to stop working, in whole or in part, in recent years.

This YouTube video by Damn Fool Idealistic Crusader (good channel to follow if you are into Golden Age Films and Home Video History BTW) breaks down the situation.

He has also created a Google Docs master list of titles known to be affected.

These seem to have been mostly "catalogue titles", DVD releases of the studio's vast library of inhouse or acquired Golden Age films, but also some (then) contemporary TV shows like Entourage and Veronica Mars. The studio's (then) new film releases from that era seem to have been largely unaffected. Sadly for many of us here a lot of Animation releases were affected, including DCAU discs, Animaniacs, several of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection volumes and other vintage cartoon sets.

Please note if you have a copy of one of the items on this list, it does not necessarily mean that your copy has been affected, just that it could be. In some cases, there were later pressings of these discs when the plant was no longer being used, and they will be safe. But even if your copy was manufactured in that era it is (or at least seems to be) a case by case basis.

For me it's lucky I live in the UK, as most of my collection are Region 2 releases that I believe were manufactured elsewhere and thus do not fall into this danger zone. However I did import a few titles that were never released in the UK. So far I have checked (either by playing through in the background recently or performing a quick check):
- Popeye Volume 1: 1933-1938 Last few cartoons on the fourth/last disc seem not to work, nor some of the special features. Sadly John K's abysmal commentaries seem to be unaffected (no hindsight needed to evaluate those either)
- Tex Avery's Droopy 2 Disc Set Extras on the second disc seem not to work, but all cartoons are fine, can live with this as I believe they were pretty much puff pieces
- Tom & Jerry Spotlight Collection Volume 2 Seems to run perfectly fine. I bought these sets in around 2011 and I believe they were later pressings after it was discovered some censored shorts had been included by mistake, so may have been out of the danger zone

I've currently got Volume 2 and 3 of Popeye winging their way to me, so it wasn't the best time for me to really discover this! Hopefully they were manufactured a bit later or otherwise unaffected.

Pretty sure WHV used to offer exchanges for DVDs that stopped working. I've definitely done that before. I wonder if they still do that.

I've never had this issue in the past, but I recently had trouble viewing disc 1 of Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 4. While there was no visible rot on the disc itself, my computer showed an error message saying it was unable to read the disc. The other three discs seem to work fine, however.

I own several of the cartoon collections on the list, but I haven't watched most of them in a long time. I may start checking them for similar errors.

I've had a disappointingly fair amount of discs stop working for me. I've had to replace both of the first two season sets of Ed, Edd n' Eddy (before its eventual complete series release), a couple of various Animaniacs discs from my collection, and the second disc from Tex Avery's Droopy set. That last one especially hurts, as I can't access the later Droopy shorts, which I don't think will arrive on Blu-Ray anytime soon.

When I first learned about disc rot (not just WB but in general), I started a long project to either buy digital versions or, if not available on digital, to rip DVDs for my own personal use. So even though some of the titles on that spreadsheet I own (Animaniacs, Looney Tunes Golden Collections), I'm not completely out if they stop working.

This is why I'm not all "physical only" anymore. Too many things can go wrong- disc rot, scratching, DVD drives failing over time, etc.

From my Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition Tin.

I became aware of this problem a few days ago. I became frustrated when I saw the list. I consider the Superman Collector's tin one of my best DVD sets I own. WB should have some kind of "on demand" exchange where you visit a website, fill out a form, send the discs back and get new ones. I have some of my affected titles on Blu-Ray and I'm considering upgrading everything else to Blu-Ray as well.

I was going through my DVD’s last night and discovered the first disc of Ed Edd n Eddy season 1 didn’t work at all. The second disc of season 2 was acting weird (instead of starting with the menu it went straight to an episode and it stopped working when I tried to go to special features). I really need to get around to buying the complete series DVD.

They should have gotten rid of that company with the DVDS a long time ago. Offer full refund all around. They actually did for me once.

Stories like this make me glad I recently decided to pull my thumb out and get around to backing up all my DVD's. I found a couple of older Ghibli releases that no longer worked and had something visibly wrong (one had gotten a rough texture that got worse the closer to the outer ring you went, the other had some parts where it looked like the edge of a sticker that was peeling).

I got in touch with WB about my DVDs that stopped working, and now I'm just waiting to see if they have anything in stock to send me.

I wish I'd thought to look into this about the ones I knew about long before.

I just found a title that's not on the list. It's Black Books the complete 3rd series. I have been through copies of it three times and none of them worked. The first copy was something that I had sealed for years and only recently got around to watching it. It wouldn't load in any player I tried. Tried a second copy and it, too, wouldn't load. the third copy WOULD start up and play the previews and trailers, but when I clicked on the episodes to watch them, it would freeze up and not actually go to the episode.
I am really hoping that I'll find a copy that DOES work. It feels weird to have the first two seasons that play just fine (watched them just a few weeks ago) but not the final 3rd season.

It just happened a 4th time. I thought I'd try another copy. Like the first copy, this one wouldn't load on my computer or my living room player. I am just going to download the episodes and burn my own dvd. I'm tired of this.

I recently went thru all the seasons...season 1 and 4 was fine but all other seasons 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 were not...had same issues as stated in my previous post....but i purchased the boxset that was released in 2014 and scanned thru them this morning...seems to be fine! No issues!

Next up...imma go thru my original dukes of hazzard seasons but im sure they are messed up as well....if so imma buy the dukes boxset that was released in 2017 and ill give a update soon on my expierence with the dukes

Had this happen with my Ed, Edd, n Eddy season 1 DVD. I think at least one episode would start skipping or freeze, then go back to the main menu. The season 2 one seemed to be fine. Thank heavens for the complete series set.

With the Tom & Jerry Golden Era Anthology blu-ray coming soon, I thought I'd give the Special Features on the (solid, but flawed in numerous ways) Spotlight Collection DVDs a final revisit in the event that any of them are not carried over. Turns out the first disc on the first set is no longer recognised, even though I last checked it when this thread was started last year.

Oh well, at least the blu-ray set *is* coming.

Watched the live-action "Moana" today and felt nothing that special compared to the original 2016 film. In fact, I don't remember much from the first animated film, but I think they barely changed anything in the 2026 version
@Sam the Cartoonist is right, I've registered on this site two times and I've enjoyed it! :) I'd posted this back in 2016, over ten years ago!
