To throw in my two cents...

Metropolis and Gotham City ("Gotham" as noted above is NYC's nickname) are both of course based on the Big Apple... a city that *does* exist in the DC Universe.

IIRC, didn't the Teen Titans operate out of NYC in the 80's comics? That's where I assumed the Cartoon Network series took place, personally...

Gotham City's Statue-of-Liberty is called "Lady Gotham"; the DC version of NYC still has its own State of Liberty...

And to state my own feelings on where I think their fictional cities are located:

Gotham City: southern New Jersey. As if a place like Gotham could be anywhere else *but* New Jersey. ;-)

Metropolis: northern Delaware, possibly on the opposite side of the large (150-mile-wide) body of water from Gotham City. While some have tried suggesting Metropolis as being in Rhode Island (for some JLA's original Happy Harbor HQ tidbit-related reason), Delaware seems to work better for me. Besides, it's the East Coast--driving from one city to another in a short amount of time is a cinch, and I'd imagine the DC east coast is crowded enough already with the real *and* fictional cities being accounted for. Besides, Delaware *does* have a "Kent County"... ;-)

I also assume that Gotham and Metropolis are within driving distance of each other, probably a few hours' apart---far enough apart (as my answers above) to have their own heroes/identities, but close enough for the obligatory crossovers ;-)

Central City: despite the current comics' answer of Missouri, I always felt it was Ohio----it reminds me of places like Cincinnati or Cleveland.

Keystone City: also despite the current comics' answer of Kansas, it strikes me as more of a Pennsylvania sort of place---PA *is* the "Keystone State" after all. Both cities in current comic continuity could be assumed to straddle the Ohio-Pennsylvania border in my thinking (pre-Crisis, they were opposite-Earth analogues of each other)...

In Joker's Favor, a driver's license shows that Gotham is in New York state. Starcrossed reveils that Metropolis is 30 miles from Gotham. Using this evidence, we know that:

Gotham is in NY
Metropolis is in NY, PA, NJ, Conn, Mass, or VT.

Great post, Brainatra. I always had the Rhode Island impression about Metropolis from the comics also. It wasn't until I saw the DC Atlas that I ever tried to wrap my head around the possibility that it could be in Deleware.

I also preferred the idea of Central City being in Ohio and Keystone City being in Pennsylvania (I had always assumed the original creators of Keystone had Philadelphia in mind since Pennsylvania is the "Keystone State".)

Does the atlas say Gotham and Blüdhaven are both in that state?

Bludhaven hadn't been created at the time of the Atlas' original publication.

And back to animated universe...

Having just purchased and watching Starcrossed the other day, I believe that someone stated (while in Metropolis) that they were only 30 miles from Gotham City and Bruce's Mansion.

Remember that the only real evidence of the League being in Metropolis after their escape (the appearance of the Daily Planet in the background) is in a deleted scene. Otherwise, there is no direct evidence about where the League is, after they escape. The prior appearance of the Planet Building didn't connect the characters to actually being in Metropolis.

So, does a deleted scene really carry any weight? I have a hard time believing that Metropolis and Gotham are only seperated by 30 miles. Bruce Wayne needed to take a flight to get to and from Metropolis in "World's Finest." Nobody takes a flight for what would only be a half-hour drive.

Here's a question, though. Is the location of Wayne Manor so well-known that Flash and GL didn't require any directions to get there in "Starcrossed"?

Well, presumably Bruce gave them some semblance of directions or indication as to where it was. They've both been in Gotham City before and are presumably familiar with the city, so perhaps Bruce just gave them directions off-screen.

Of course Superman and J'onn J'onzz found it without problem since Superman already knew where it was.

Actually, my thought about Wally and John knowing the directions to Wayne Manor goes something like this: Clark knows where Wayne Manor is, he then tells J'onn, who telepathically relays the directions to John and Wally.

Gotham in NJ, and Metropolis in Delaware?? I, personally, always thought that Metropolis was around NYC, and Gotham was a little south of it (and Bludhaven was southwest of that, as well). Never envisioned Metropolis in Delaware, coming from someone that lived in northern Delaware. The closest city I could think of that's that far north might be Delaware City, but Metropolis is so not emulating Delaware City. Anyway.

Well, the DC cities is obviously set in an "alternate" universe--I mean, we don't have superheroes flying around our universe. So, the question is: How different is the DC "alternate" universe? Presumably you could concoct an alternative history that could explain how Delaware might come to contain a big and important city. So I've no problem with putting Metropolis there.

Well, not Vermont: Metropolis has a big harbor, and Vermont is landlocked. (I think it's unlikely that Metropolis is located on the shores of Lake Champlain.) But this does suggest that the animated Metropolis is not in Delaware.

Metropolis seems to be a MAJOR port, as well as a financial center. Pennsylvania doesn't strike me as fitting the bill, as it's only access to the sea is is the St. Lawrence Seaway.

So we are faced with four options:

NY, NJ, Conn, Mass.

I have a good friend who is an Urban Planning major. I'll see if he has any ideas.
