I thought that this episode was really good. Seeing Coco and Tetia racing across the sky was pretty cute. I certainly wasn't expecting a giant snake monster to attack them. Despite the Brimmed Cap's focus on Coco, I really thought that they were targeting the kids taking the test instead, but this is a way to get everyone involved with the conflict and it creates more tension.
Turning the bridge into a giant ice slide was a pretty smart idea. Agott realized that they were targeting Coco again and tried to lie about her fate so that they would give up. It was a nice attempt, even though it still shows how much of a tsundere she can be, but it obviously wouldn't work. They really should have kept sliding away to create more distance and have a better chance to get to safety. The Brimmed Cap probably would have caught up with them anyway, but if they're targeting them in order to get to Coco, they would have already been keeping tabs on her and would automatically know that Agott was lying.
Based on what the Brimmed Cap said about how he gave up his flesh and just how he moves around, I wonder if he used forbidden magic to effectively seal his soul and his one eye onto a hat and cloak. He certainly doesn't move around like an invisible person. I was starting to feel bad for Agott as he was about to tattoo some spell onto her body. She certainly doesn't deserve being tortured or her body being manipulated against her wishes. Euini using his cloak to write a spell underneath the bridge to move the Brimmed Cap was pretty smart move. It was a nice way to give him a good confidence boost, which only made the Brimmed Cap using him instead all the more tragic. Euini's transformation into a wolf looked so brutal and painful. It really showed how far the Brimmed Caps are willing to go and why these spells are forbidden in the first place. Both extremes about how to handle magic are not really shown in the best light to say the least. Although, I will say that Euini's wolf form looked so cool.
Richeh wanted to go help Euini after they had connected during the test. Agott didn't want to prioritize the test, but she was right. They needed to get help and get the Myrphons back to their flock. She was also right in that Richeh doesn't know that many spells and is more limited in how she can help in these situations. Agott actually apologizing if it was too harsh to hear might have the nicest she's treated any of the girls. It was a brutal way for Richeh to learn how sticking to just her spells can backfire. She already a taste of that while they were trying to get away from the Brimmed Cap, but this was even worse since she can't even help a friend in need. She can only run for help. It is a noticeable sacrifice from Agott since she really wanted to pass this test, but the test is already kind of moot in this current situation. Although, I expect that Richeh will figure out someway to help save Euini so that she can further learn how to use other spells. Plus, I think that it makes more sense for Richeh to take this test again instead of Agott, if only because of how unprepared she is to handle crisis situations.
At least Coco, Tetia and Qifrey were still together. It's really touching that Qifrey held onto his students even after they fell. The fact that he woke up so quickly when Coco was reaching for his glasses made me wonder if that's a huge sore spot. We've only seen one of Qifrey's eyes and even the other half of his glasses is dark. I wonder if his eye is injured or even gone and that's part of his vague backstory involving the Brimmed Caps. I wasn't expecting the people of Romonon to show up. I thought that might have been a fable created to further explain why magic had to be kept secret from the larger world, but it was indeed true. Even when he's so injuried, Qifrey still wanted to protect his students. They didn't have any other options since neither Coco or Tetia could handle something like this. That bright spell was so cool and the artwork during that scene was gorgeous.
It's a shame that the season ends on such a huge cliffhanger. I can't really blame them when this seems to be the middle of an arc, so they couldn't really wrap it up within the remaining episodes, but the season was still solid. The characters were pretty likable and interesting, the world building was great, the animation and character designs were just beautiful and it had plenty of intense moments. I'm going to miss watching Witch Hat Atelier every Monday. I'm sure that we'll hear word on a season two sooner rather than later, but hopefully it won't take too long.
