"Witch Hat Atelier" Season One Talkback

I thought that this episode was really good. Seeing Coco and Tetia racing across the sky was pretty cute. I certainly wasn't expecting a giant snake monster to attack them. Despite the Brimmed Cap's focus on Coco, I really thought that they were targeting the kids taking the test instead, but this is a way to get everyone involved with the conflict and it creates more tension.

Turning the bridge into a giant ice slide was a pretty smart idea. Agott realized that they were targeting Coco again and tried to lie about her fate so that they would give up. It was a nice attempt, even though it still shows how much of a tsundere she can be, but it obviously wouldn't work. They really should have kept sliding away to create more distance and have a better chance to get to safety. The Brimmed Cap probably would have caught up with them anyway, but if they're targeting them in order to get to Coco, they would have already been keeping tabs on her and would automatically know that Agott was lying.

Based on what the Brimmed Cap said about how he gave up his flesh and just how he moves around, I wonder if he used forbidden magic to effectively seal his soul and his one eye onto a hat and cloak. He certainly doesn't move around like an invisible person. I was starting to feel bad for Agott as he was about to tattoo some spell onto her body. She certainly doesn't deserve being tortured or her body being manipulated against her wishes. Euini using his cloak to write a spell underneath the bridge to move the Brimmed Cap was pretty smart move. It was a nice way to give him a good confidence boost, which only made the Brimmed Cap using him instead all the more tragic. Euini's transformation into a wolf looked so brutal and painful. It really showed how far the Brimmed Caps are willing to go and why these spells are forbidden in the first place. Both extremes about how to handle magic are not really shown in the best light to say the least. Although, I will say that Euini's wolf form looked so cool.

Richeh wanted to go help Euini after they had connected during the test. Agott didn't want to prioritize the test, but she was right. They needed to get help and get the Myrphons back to their flock. She was also right in that Richeh doesn't know that many spells and is more limited in how she can help in these situations. Agott actually apologizing if it was too harsh to hear might have the nicest she's treated any of the girls. It was a brutal way for Richeh to learn how sticking to just her spells can backfire. She already a taste of that while they were trying to get away from the Brimmed Cap, but this was even worse since she can't even help a friend in need. She can only run for help. It is a noticeable sacrifice from Agott since she really wanted to pass this test, but the test is already kind of moot in this current situation. Although, I expect that Richeh will figure out someway to help save Euini so that she can further learn how to use other spells. Plus, I think that it makes more sense for Richeh to take this test again instead of Agott, if only because of how unprepared she is to handle crisis situations.

At least Coco, Tetia and Qifrey were still together. It's really touching that Qifrey held onto his students even after they fell. The fact that he woke up so quickly when Coco was reaching for his glasses made me wonder if that's a huge sore spot. We've only seen one of Qifrey's eyes and even the other half of his glasses is dark. I wonder if his eye is injured or even gone and that's part of his vague backstory involving the Brimmed Caps. I wasn't expecting the people of Romonon to show up. I thought that might have been a fable created to further explain why magic had to be kept secret from the larger world, but it was indeed true. Even when he's so injuried, Qifrey still wanted to protect his students. They didn't have any other options since neither Coco or Tetia could handle something like this. That bright spell was so cool and the artwork during that scene was gorgeous.

It's a shame that the season ends on such a huge cliffhanger. I can't really blame them when this seems to be the middle of an arc, so they couldn't really wrap it up within the remaining episodes, but the season was still solid. The characters were pretty likable and interesting, the world building was great, the animation and character designs were just beautiful and it had plenty of intense moments. I'm going to miss watching Witch Hat Atelier every Monday. I'm sure that we'll hear word on a season two sooner rather than later, but hopefully it won't take too long.

Ha ha, Coco's slightly off spell on Agott's shoes actually helped for the ice sled escape. :D

Agott was harsh but right. Seemed like Richeh finally understood her strength was also a weakness. This is really feeling like Naruto Chunin Exam all over again, but eh hopefully not like Naruto they retake a exam soon after this incident though under more supervision. I guessing since the tattoo is somewhere on beast Euini's body, a master should be able to undo it if they can find it and keep him restrained. But at best, Agott could probably only trap him. Though they're all on their own. No one else knows they're in trouble to send more witches to the test site unless Alaira was supposed to check in at some point but by then it may be too late.

Willing to transform a child into a beast. Yeah, that's a villain. But wonder if that's a clue. We pretty much know this Cap tattooed themself and "sacrificed" their body. But the one big eye + transforming -- it seems to imply this witch transformed themself into a beast as well or can. Definitely a bit of a mad scientist type. But all that just to manipulate Coco into using forbidden magic felt a smidge over the top.

Hmm, seems like Qifrey is going into Dark Qifrey mode. Guess there's something terrible like a scar or missing eye behind those dark lens. The fall was bad enough, now they gotta deal with bitter Romonon turned into gold. Curious how Qifrey will stop them if he can't use magic offensively per the rules. I thought they could simply fly back up with their Slyph Shoes?

Augh, cliffhanger. Now I'll be even more tempted to keep buying Dark Horse's grimore editions. Or who am I kidding I was going to keep buying them anyway, lol. Great first season, gonna miss this show but it was well worth the wait the first time, it will be the second - knock wood. They would be fools not to renew this.

Based on what the Brimmed Cap said about how he gave up his flesh and just how he moves around, I wonder if he used forbidden magic to effectively seal his soul and his one eye onto a hat and cloak. He certainly doesn't move around like an invisible person.
Ooh, that makes sense. This witch bonded their body and became their cap and cloak almost like making themselves 2D.

Although, I expect that Richeh will figure out someway to help save Euini so that she can further learn how to use other spells. Plus, I think that it makes more sense for Richeh to take this test again instead of Agott, if only because of how unprepared she is to handle crisis situations.
If that was the witch turned into as you speculate, Richeh's ribbon spell may have been an amusing way to stop them. Basically rubberize them so the point they're all limp and can't move.

"Review: “Witch Hat Atelier” Season 1: Anime of the Year Contender"

"In the 2020s, we are blessed with so many phenomenal fantasy titles airing recently. Witch Hat Atelier looks to be another classic in the making. This anime is an adaptation of a seinen (men’s) manga by Kamome Shirahama. The main characters are small children, but this is an adult series despite the lack of any real sexual or graphic content. I would be okay with showing this title to kids brave enough to deal with a few scary scenes involving dragons and evil witches. This series was an absolute delight to watch and is on my shortlist for Anime of the Year (the other obvious frontrunner, season four of Re:Zero, will be covered next month).

In the world of Witch Hat Atelier, magic is an ability that anybody can use, but the witches (here a gender-neutral term for magic users) spreads the false belief that magic is a rare gift that only those born with the ability can use. Those who are allowed to use magic are witches and the Muggles are known as the Unknowing. Our protagonist is Coco, an ordinary girl, who accidentally discovers magic and invertedly turns her mother into a crystal. She encounters a mysterious witch named Qifrey who offers to make her his apprentice. He warns that there is a secret group of witch police officers known as the Knights Moralis who erase memories Men in Black style if any of the Unknowing finds out that they are capable of using magic. In this world, spells are done by drawing on magic paper rather than waving wands and spouting Latin-sounding gibberish."

Is that Joan Cusack voicing Jessie in that Toy Story Papa John's commercial? If so, it sounds rough. Woundn't surprise me if it wasn't, though.
